Newcomer / Intro Sagan Terminal + ... got a bit too close .... !

WOW! Oh to have the sim software downloaded on your computer ........ where you can make backup save points to revert back to if needed ......... But that's just another issue. ;)

Some people play what is sometimes called iron man, if they get destroyed they wipe their save and start over as a new commander just as if the old one had been killed.

Yes, I've seen that. And in many ways agree with it. "Let's play for real !"
..... and here's me, at another post, talking about backup saves so as to avoid dying ...... I just want both: "for real" and "not for real."
Make up your mind Wombat ..... :D

No, if a Cartographer pays you for data then it shields that data against being lost. You only lose the data that the Cartographer has not paid you for.
Now I am confused.
QUESTION
If a Cartographer pays me for my exploration data of a system, is that data lost to me upon my death or can I recover it upon being re-born ?

You’ll still be able to see the information you previously discovered on the galaxy map after death.

When you sell the data to the cartographer it is transferred from your storage systems and becomes part of the permanent record of the galaxy after that point the destruction of your ship can’t touch it as it is no longer stored there. You can only lose unsold data.

ED being multiplayer game, even in solomode means that you have just one serverside "savegame" which is dynamically updated. Any thing you do is done, and cannot be altered (by the player atleast). So if you loose stuff that stays lost.

That's not what I asked.
My question is: " ...... is that data lost to me upon my death or can I recover it upon being re-born ? ........ "
Say you have found something as first player, sell that data, and then regardless of you dying it is permanent record and will not be lost. Every player hitting up said system afterwards sees that places have been marked with first discovered by Wombat1940....

What I'm trying to do is SAVE STUFF. I understand the one and only personal serverside "savegame" concept. Virtually the Cartographer is acting as a personal game saver. But a saved game doesn't give you total game save recovery, only partial.
So ....... does that recovery, recover the system mapping previous acquired before dying ?

No ...... no ........ I'm not the first discoverer ........ I'm the 1 000 234 478th discoverer ....... ;)

If you have sold that data, it cannot be lost after that.
Now there are some pretty simple rules what happens when you die in game:
Cargo ->lost.
Engineering materials >cannot be lost
Unsold cartographic data >lost
Ship and modules, assuming you have enough money to cover insurance co-pay and you choose to pay >not lost.
Ship and modules, assuming you have not enough money, or choose not to pay > lost.

You need to stop using the word recovery, recovery implies that you travel and retrieve something after dying. This doesn’t happen in ED, and it seems to be confusing you.

I think everything has now been explained in sufficient detail. The reason it’s still probably sounding complicated to you is that you perhaps haven’t yet visited universal cartographics in game and sold some data yourself.

It's really just a simple yes or no ...........

Yes ........ thanks ....... enough is enough. I'll move on, or maybe aside ...... ;)

Sorry I wasn’t trying to be mean or dismissive...

You’ll answer a lot of your own questions just by playing though (and formulate many more).
No .... no ..... understand. I was just driving everybody mad ! Your comment was well received. ;)
