Just one damn second. Are you telling me and everyone else here that this thing was always in message number three, and no one, not one person checked any of this stuff in audacity?

And we're just seeing it now? With proper punctuation?

I am just very perplexed that no one thought to look at that. 🤨
Nope. I heard those messages and checked them immediately in a spectograph (well I recorded them first). And posted about it the moment I found it here. This thread started quite a bit later than the first messages about it in the Halloween Event news thread.

Canonn also did a check for this stuff pretty much immediately, from what I read in the system chat yesterday(once I had gathered all the logs and unhid it).

I never ever unhide the system chat anymore. It's just plain annoying.
It has some decent interactions here and there.

After I returned from my excursion to the Thetis, of course, the customary gankers had arrived, so it had devolved into a mess that was only worthy of destroying brain cells. And I was in solo, because I’m not suicidally mad. Just ‘mad’.

I am hoping this leads to something more, like a CG, rather than just being the usual Hallowe'en flavour text. We will see...

How would they even 'show the pic' based on the functionality that is in the game? All that they could do is add the msg onto the end of one of the inbox messages. As it is it is an (optional) extra puzzle for those who want it - the story works fine without ever going near a spectrogram.
That's my point. Add the functionality. Don't rely on external tools and knowledge. Do it well and maybe we can even use those in-game tools for other stuff in the game to add to the variety of stuff we can do in the game. Lord knows I'd prefer that to the plant scanner. If people are saying they are having so much fun using tools outside the game to solve this puzzle, what does that say about the game?

Not every engagement outside a game is bad. Back in the early days of graphic adventures, I had stacks of paper with hand drawn maps on my desk, because no game provided an in-game map. I had to use outside tools (also known as: Pencil and paper, and my brain). You should not have to rely on outside tools and knowledge to find your way around games!!!! The result: Today's games all provide you with not only maps, but also literal pointers where to go, and games (and gamers) have developed into zombies following on-screen markers because they can't go anywhere without a map to save their lives.

It's a frikkin' easter egg that, as of yet, has no consequence whatever. Maybe it's time to let that fake outrage go.

"“All crews deployed for the exercise are now ignoring orders and attacking anything within range. The evidence we’ve gathered suggests they’re suffering from violent mania, caused by some kind of mass psychological disturbance. They are still capable of operating the ships, making them a danger to civilians.”

Finally, NPC gankers!

Pencil and what now

Oh? The notepad? Yeah, I know that one!

Agree with you, though. To the Elite devs : please, never stop those funs Easter eggs!

Remember, the current Thargoid War started with a lost megaship being tracked down during the Halloween event of 2020 and leading to our Salivation...and all that has come since...

So maybe it is related to the current state of the galaxy or maybe not.

But it is creepy and it could still lead to other stuff...

I'm anxious with anticipation... 😨

They're never going to assign a whole load of dev time to one offs like this. Best accept it, or you'll end up being driven crazy like those people in the story ;)

That said people are happy with the puzzle in the game and thinking of it as fun?
And why can't they have the fun in the game? Why do only people with specialized knowledge get to have the fun? Is the puzzle for everyone or just people with expertise in audio manipulation? Yes, I know, it's just an easter egg...for the small portion of people that can see it. This is like Fleet Carriers for Squadrons only all over again, that was a great decision too.

Probably because if they devoted enough resources to put suitable tools in the game for this sort of thing some or many people would be getting upset with them for not putting that time and effort into something more generally needed in the main part of the game.

Just press "record" in the open source tool Audacity (available to every single one of us), then press "Play" in your ship, then look at the spectogram. There is no audio wizardry involved whatsoever. Even flying the ED tutorial missions requires more specialized knowledge and expertise than that. Heck, setting up the control bindings requires more willpower, focus and specialized knowledge (about axes and stuff).

We have a ton of external tools for ED, and the vast majority of players seem to enjoy them. Now, if you were to add audio analysis software directly into the game, that would be a nuisance for most.

I really don't understand what you're upset about... Do you really expect some developer to develop in game tools to solve an easter egg, or maybe it'd be better if there was no easter egg at all?

I'm all for developing more and better in game tools! But for everyday playing, and not for a one off easter egg.

Reminds me of when I played Myst as a kid. Had many papers for that one.
