ship models are a bit " simpel"

I like ED a lot, so I really don't want to start a war against the old Elite fans, I know there is a lot nostalgic feelings about the Cobra's and the Sidewinders.
But as a new player (for the first time playing an Elite game) I think the ship models are all a bit the same, sidewinder, cobra, anaconda, etc
Ok size is different and the specs are different, but the models are the same.
( Somewhere I read that you were flying a doorstopper, funny :) )I think it would be nice if there are some other shaped ships.
Will they come in the future game ?

If I wasn't on my ipad I would dig out one of those Fry meme images.

The designs couldn't be more different actually.

A forum member posted a nice image of the ships in profile but I don't remember which thread.

Considering that we have seen only 5 of 25 possible ships, mostly from the same manufacturer and there is already some variations showing (Eagle) - I strongly suspect that more looks are coming.

Will there be things that look like flimsy planes in space? Only in the flight model I suspect. ;)

You happen to pick three ships, (two of which are wedge shaped and one that is arrow shaped) and ignore the eagle and the Lakon 9 which are both nothing alike or like the ones you mention?

Well you might be onto something OP ... i could not get my friends to buy the game until they put eagle into the game. They really hated design of sidewinder and cobra.

I do not mind to much ... you see only their cockpits anyway. And those are good.

Ok , good to hear. Than I was to early with my comment. Looking forward what other manufacturers will deliver.

Basically, yes, there will be more varied ships. You won't see, say, a star citizen hornet style airplane, but there will be ships that don't exactly follow the 'wedge' pattern so much.

I agree that the ship models are not a particular strength, particularly for the likes of the sidewinder and cobra. A lot of the more interesting ships are still to come, though.

nice why? ships are meant to be flown around and not to watch them, i understand that it is just a game etc. but in future we will be flying very basic shaped objects, it doesn't make any sense to complicate things on expense of common sense.

so currently ED ships are what i like alot and i hope they will keep those basic shapes for believable game play as the game is all about believing, star citizen is completely exaggerated in all aspects if we talk about things and models, i might be wrong but that is more to attract kids and has nothing to do with ship maintenance or even handling ;)

so basically all our thoughts about ship designs are completely subjective, one love pretty shiny things while others are all for practicability.

Ok I can see the argument that the Sidewinder and Cobra are similar, but the Anaconda is completely different as is the Lakon and Eagle. Pretty sure there will be a lot more variation to come.

I beg to differ.
I feel that especially the Cobra is a very strong ship design. As far as I am concerned it has real character.

The Anaconda? Really? You actually think it looks like the Sidewinder or the Cobra?
I just don't know what to say.
Even the Sidewinder and the Cobra have more than enough morphological differences, aside from the size, to easily distinguish between them.

In general I don't understand why certain ships should not resemble each other in shape at all. Just look at real world ships, or cars or trucks, or fighter jets etc.

Also many of Elite's ships have a legacy that can not be ignored.

Well even David Braben has described them as cheese blocks, they had to be cheese blocks because there was only so much you could do in 1984 when he had to re-write the computer's line drawing routines just to get started.

As Michael Brookes said in the official live stream recently "I like cheese, but yes - new designs are coming"

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. I think the ship designs are more mechanical and practical than other games. You don't want to have long bits point out all over the place that can easily get shot off or torn off in collisions.

Can you fly that pointy one in the middle? :D

Well, I wasn't talking about SC. And I doubt if different ship models are for kids.
I believe it is more a matter of personal taste. And I have no problems with a very realistic game, but for me ED is also about fun.
