Ship Name Censoring Games

And watch out if there is even a tiny bit showing :)
Yet newspapers like Star, Sun and Sport can show almost completely naked women and put them on full display on news stands without anyone caring about it.

It only goes to prove my statement that brain death isn't necessarily terminal.

You're quite welcome, I had a few laughs myself with this thread over the past two days, thanks to everyone for contributing! :geek:

I've submitted a ticket to Fdev support regarding this issue.
I've also taken the liberty to submit the other instances of unfairly censoring ships names that came up in this thread. We'll see how support reacts, I suppose.

Names submitted for whitelisting are:

  • Attitude (ofc ;) )
  • Eat It
  • Titan and Titanic
  • Montana
  • Executor
  • Hope Dempsey

Thanks again, Cmdrs! See you in the black!

PS: If this goes to show anything then it is the need for attention to undue censoring which I very much hope will live on in this forum.

I'm happy to report that Fdev support finally got back to me (took a while but with everything going on around Odyssey I don't fault them)!

They've agreed to put all of the submitted names on their whitelist and it should be effective with the next update to the live servers.

Finally, I can have my attitude back in the game ;)

Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread!

Fly dangerously & o7, Cmdrs.

Yes

"Titan's Reach" as my carrier name was censored for the same reason.
That should be fine after the next "update to the live servers", whenever that will be since Titan and Titanic should have been added to the whitelist. Not sure if they referred to the server tick on Thargsdays?

Its okay. Its been “Leviathan’s Reach” for a year now. Thats it’s name for good. Still. Liked Titans Reach better.

reading the OP, looking a* ** now, I se tha* ** can be a problem when the stupid filter does tha* ** can cause words to be blocked which dont need to be at all. Most people just type swear words like t.h.is anyway and they manage to ge* ** through the filter. I think Mary Whitehouse wrote the filter.

Its a problem when regex searches aren't tuned to take into consideration actual words. Really, if an offensive word has other letters around it, it shouldn't be flagged as offensive.

Yes, some people will get around this restriction by putting other letters around, but a) those can be reported and b) you can combine an offensive word search with a dictionary lookup as well.

That way the U.S.S. Scunthorpe is not a problem.

And nice to see they solved this on the forum.

they still have a whitelist?

Isn't that a derogatory term that should be censored due to the offensiveness of it's friend, the blacklist. Similar to the whole master source code branch names?

the censorship in this game is hilariously stupid. You can trade slaves and drugs and guns and blow up wedding barges etc....but words get censored. Stupid. If your child is on the internet (which they have to be to play this game) then they've been exposed to all of the words. ALL of them. Just have a client side setting to censor crap for yourself and let the rest of us write/say what we want.

Why are those words censored in the first place anyway? Where I'm living, kids in school are using those words every day... it's totally normal. What's the use in censoring them? It's not like the younger players don't already know and use them way more often than the older ones, anyway.

Well, kinda exactly that. Kids that think they are cool, sound smarter, by padding their sentences with garbage. Many adults too. It can overcome a chat channel rendering it useless, making the overall game, forum, whatever, extremely juvenile and... well just useless and undesirable to use. So hard fast rules are put in place to ensure a couple "cool" kids don't flood the channel.

Its not just the vulgarities. Its pointless garbage. Padding a sentence with garbage words doesn't make content any better. Lots of people tend to use vulgarities with minimal or no content. Its more annoying THAN ALL CAPS because its just useless crap you gotta scan over.

Regarding ship names, whatever.

Edit:
Also, remember that some vulgarities are incredibly offensive. Sometimes very intentional. Depends on context. It is very hard for an automated filter to determine "context". Much easier to filter words than analyzing the content of a message.

o7 Cmdrs!

A little while ago, I built a neat little addition to my AX fleet, a Mamba, and notably for myself it was an exciting first as it is my first and only ship build without shields. I love it. I took it out for a few spins against the Thargoids and I decided to give her the to my mind apt and beautiful name "Stellar Attitude".

Now...
It was pointed out by one of my squad mates that they could not identify my ship's newly found and cherished name as it was censored out with asterisks. Discussions ensued. I was mildly puzzled at first, thinking it might be one of the numerous glitches and bugs we encounter on a daily basis and no, I do not reference Thargoids in this case, thinking maybe it's a glitch in the squad pilot roster. Sadly, it is not and even when encountering the "Stellar Attitude" in space it is not possible to know her name and gasp in awe because of it.
A little testing with splitting the apparently offensive name into either "Stellar" and "Attitude" brought to light that the offense was quite literally contained within the "Attitude".
I have an idea why that would be the case and I believe it is connected with the areas of female mammals that contain the mammary glands, as three letters contained in the word might be thought of as a reference to the aforementioned areas.

coughs and tries REALLY hard not to trigger any filters

I mean, seriously. At-t.i.t-ude is censored presumably because, you know... I do not dare spell it out on its own! o_O

Quick background info, I'm a German native speaker. Apparently I needed a new word for the German "Haltung" which most commonly translates into "attitude" in English. I thought about it and didn't come up with anything I like. So I asked my trusted online dictionary. The thing is, how these things go, they spit out translations for a looooot of different contexts.
Turns out, one of the possible translations is "erectness". A quick check with the ingame ship name filter showed that this is absolutely no problem at all, though I have to admit that this references not an inner attitude or "Haltung", but instead a body posture or "Körperhaltung".
Well.
Be it as it may, my AX ship is now named "Stellar Erectness" in protest of the insert non-offensive adjective here content filter.

Make of that what you want.

But can we please have #Attitude in this game? That would be nice.

o7

TL;DR: I'd like to very much emphasize that "Stellar Erectness" is very much my second choice in ship names and I really would like to be able to name it after its original name which is "Stellar Attitude".
Just call your ship Hodenpezi and see if that works.
