Sidewinder - erebus. Called it after hms erebus expedition ship.

Viper mk3 - black widow. With the right ship kits and black red paintjob. It looks like black widow spider.

Eagle - inferno. With red ignition paint it is like a comet.

Python - helios. I have golden paint on it. So yellowish and shiny. So called it after the sun god.

Chieftain - havoc. Well....rampaging those bugs

Krait mk2- phasma. It looks like stealth ship. So i called it ghost but in latin.

Phantom - spectre. Somehow it sounds stealty

T-10 - nostromo. Aliens big freighter

Anaconda - normandy. Mass effect reference.

Cutter - the reaper

Fed Corvette - sol invictus. defender of sol

fdl - mjolnir. Hits hard as thors hammer

mamba - scimitar

Cobra mk3 - icarus

Clipper - barbarossa. My pirate ship. Called after ottoman pirate

Icourier - velocity. Speeeed

FGS - goliath. Hard as titan

Orca- ulysses

Asp x - galileo. Astronomer

Vulture - heimdall. God who posseses the resounding PLASMAS

A few of the more noteworthy ones:

Viper IV - Black Beauty (I only had the Black Friday paint job, so I gave it green weapons and engines for the Green Hornet reference)
Type 6 - Humble Zathras (Fitted for the old Palin missions - Zathras is used to being beast of burden for other people's problems...)
FDL - Atomic Squirrel (Old FFXI reference, sort of)
Explorer Clipper - Trip the Light (perhaps an obscure reference, but I liked it - someday I might get an explorer-Beluga and call it 'Western Wind'...)
Mamba - Mister Fahrenheit (Hmm, very fast with possible thermal issues...)
Miner Type 10 - Diggy Diggy Hole
...And others with much more boring names.

For some reason I seem to be going with song references nowadays. I'm still looking for an excuse to call something 'Walkie Talkie Man' - must be red, large, not too fast, but faster than me...

I like the idea from Frontier: Elite II that the ships themselves are persistent and we are buying second hand or used ships.

Hence, I use http://shipnames.iainmnorman.com/ to generate them as My CMDR (and I) would never be so foolish as to buy a brand new ship (You lose 25% of value just launching it!)

This has given me:-

Shy Embargo - Hauler
External Exercise - Cobra III

Then I use random.org to generate an ID using AA-NNA where As are letters and N numbers.

No Data Available - FDL, nod to Legion from Mass Effect (extra giggles when I use it for data missions or shuttling data to dangerous areas).
Saint of Killers - FDL, nod to that spectactular antagonist from the Preacher series.
The Devil's Own - Phantom, sounds cool and I have a devilish thing going on.
Polite Little Devil - DBX, I have only a dear friend to blame for this: "That's Phisto's modus operandi: rush in where angels fear to tread then act like a polite little devil once he's there."

Iain Banks' Culture books are a big influence on my name schemes. If it's quirky like Culture ships then I'll likely approve.

My fleet (minus the three I sold last week)

iCourier -- Velocity. I actually changed the name of this ship. In order to not fall afoul of Poseidon I sold the old Courier and just bought another. Never change a ship's name! Or carry bananas. You have been warned. The name is because it boosts nearly 800

AspX -- Dawnbreaker. Named after the sword in Skyrim. I let my 8 year old son Ben name it. When he saw it it was silhouetted against a star, so appeared to 'glow' and it reminded him of the same effect on the sword.

Python -- Takao After the Japanese cruiser. My concept for my Python was always 'armed merchant cruiser'. So a cruiser name fits.

Orca -- Stratocaster I play guitar and own several Strats. Homage to one of the world's most perfectly designed instruments.

FDL -- Eagle Weslake Named after Dan Gurney's 1967 Formula One car. To this day it remains the only American car to win a F1 race. The most beautiful race car of all time too :)

DBX -- Mad Hops When I bought it then engineered it I said to myself, it has Mad Hops! And it stuck.

Anaconda -- Rum Runner It's rare that I play Elite without a glass of Rum.

Krait II -- Poison Whiskey Newest addition to the fleet. Named after the Lynyrd Skynyrd song. One of my favorite bands of all time.

Bacchus - Cobra Mk3 with Onionhead paint job, used for trading in rares (Bacchus is the Roman God of wine)
Eagle TAV - TAV being short for Trans Atmospheric Vehicle (it'll be the first ship I take down to an ELW when they are released)
Gudridur - Diamondback Explorer and my first exploration-dedicated (Gudridur was an Icelandic explorer)
Gudridur II - Asp Explorer, my current explorer build
Kali - Viper mk4, Hindi goddess of war
Red Dwarf - Type 7 (with red paint job), trading vessel - I was lacking imagination
Never to Late - Krait Phantom. Points if anyone gets where the name is from.
