I have a relatively small "fleet". Some of them parked back in the bubble. A few out at Colonia. I have no particular naming scheme. But many of my ship names reference sci-fi shows, books and other gaming sources, as well as my own quirky sense of humor.
I no longer have a Sidewinder. I traded it in for the first ship I spent a lot of time in -
Cobra Mk III: Blue Hayabusa
The name is in part based on the primary color of course. Hayabusa is the Japanese word for "Falcon". I've always considered the Cobra III the YT 1300 series (Millenium Falcon) of the Elite universe. It's mainly for light cargo. But you can do ANYTHING with it. It was the first ship I bought a custom paint job and a ship kit for. As well as heavily modified via engineering. So I wanted to name mine some variant of "Falcon" but not be obvious about it. "I don't know... fly casual!"
My next major purchase was a Vulture. I've since sold it. (Might buy another someday - good ship) But it's name at the time was
Star Hawk. Both referencing an old toy I once owned and the fighter line from the 70s Buck Rogers show.
My next major purchase that's stayed with me is an Asp Explorer. I used her as a long range cargo ship for a few months, then made my first trip out to Colonia in her.
Asp Explorer: Far Horizon
Based on her original function - and the fact she could still fight while carrying cargo, I thought of the AspX as having the name "The 27th Rule of Acquisition" which just so happens to be, according to one of the DS9 novels: "There's nothing more dangerous than an honest businessman."
This was before in-game ship naming was a thing, though. And I discovered that the original name wouldn't fit. Darn. So just before I headed out to Colonia I renamed her the slightly boring, but thematically accurate name
Far Horizon.
The next ship I bought was a goal I'd been working toward for a long time. Ever since I saw this ship design I fell in love with her. The Fer De Lance.
Fer De Lance: Minerva

The Minerva is named of course for the Roman version of the goddess Athena - a virtuoso in war. But what the name is REALLY a reference to is the main ship from the Anime Crusher Joe from the 80s. Always thought the Fer De Lance bore a resemblance to that ship.
I spent a LOT of time tricking out the Minerva. And I'm not yet done! But she definitely makes bounty hunting in the hazres fun!
For the next few ships, I'm not sure what was purchased when. But I do know I bought them all within about 3 months of each other.
The first is:
Imperial Eagle: Argent Angel
Definitely the FASTEST ship in my collection in real Newtonian Space. Not as fast as some I've seen. But she's getting there. When stripped down, she makes a simply AWESOME canyon racer! I can also use her to do the occasional data courier run. She needs no weapons for that sort of mission, so I don't carry them. Instead I rely on maneuverability and pure speed. Even if interdicted, there's NOTHING that can keep up with her that has the weapons to harm her. I've also tested her as an actual fighter in Hazres. But I've got a much better set of ships for that. But she certainly is exciting!
Speaking of canyon running - I've got a pair of stock Eagle IIs for that sort of thing - in anticipation of someday joining up with the racing circuit. One is in the bubble, and the other one is stored out at Colonia. They each have similar names, based on more or less the same source.
Eagle II: Screaming Metal
and -
Eagle II: Metal Hurlant
"Metal Hurlant" is the name of the French Magazine that became the basis of the American "Heavy Metal". And "Screaming Metal" is merely the more accurate translation of Metal Hurlant.
Both are simply A-rated stock Eagles, stripped down for canyon racing. I've had a lot of fun with these three ships. And wound up replacing all of them at least a couple of times each. But at least the re-buys are cheap!
Next are two recent purchases of mine that have not had full engineering done and are waiting for me to get back from Distant Worlds 2 to tinker with. The first is sitting out at Colonia, I'm not exactly sure of what use I'll put this ship to. But she seems a good all-rounder.
Krait MKII: Swordfish
When I got done with the paintjob and the custom ship kit, the first thing that came to mind as a name was Swordfish. I'm not really sure why. The only real reference it could be to is the Cowboy Bebop fighter of the same name - but it looks NOTHING like that ship. I don't know what to make of my mind sometimes...
shrug
The other purchase is back in the bubble and I haven't done ANYTHING with it other than give it a custom black paint scheme.
Imperial Courier: Avanti
The name Avanti is a reference to something personal. My father passed on to me a love of old classic cars. Including Studebakers and British sports cars.
Avanti is a reference to the Studebaker Avanti - a car truly ahead of its time and one my dad loved. Here's to you, dad.
And lastly - the flagship of my fleet. An Anaconda that is currently the ship I'm using on the Distant Worlds 2 Expedtion.
Anaconda: Azhanti High Lightning
At times she's been configured as a full combat build, at others an armored trader. Currently she's in full exploration build. Made as light as possible and Frameshift drive maxed out with a Guardian FSD booster. She's just shy of 60LY range. But only because I also have both Repair and Fueling Limpets aboard. I'm one of the Fleet engineers - the Hull Seals (arf arf!) people you can call to repair your hull if you get in a scrape. I'm not officially part of the Fuel Rats, but if you need it, I can top off your fuel tank while I'm repairing your ship.
The name is a reference to an old Sci-Fi RPG called Traveller. Azhanti High Lightning is the name of a ship (in lore) and an actual game supplerment. If I ever get a second Conda and split up the roles so that one is always an exploration ship and one is always a combat ship, then the second one will be named "Arrival Vengeance".
