Ship names?

I currently have:
Sidewinder: Fly
Adder: Caroline
Cobra Mk 3: Derwent
Diamondback Scount: Blackbeck
Imperial Courier: Danae
Asp Ex: Nuthatch
Python: Carrock
Krait Mk 2: Errius Dawn

and a couple of unnamed ones I bought but didn't feel like fitting out at the time.

Anaconda - Don't
Cutter - Spare Us (Echo and the Bunnymen ref).

Means I get to say - "I fly my Anaconda, Don't, when not flying Spare Us, the Cutter". And that makes me chuckle to myself.

I rename my ships now and then as the mood strikes. We maybe even have a little rechristening party with the champaigne bottle and what have you, it just happens off-screen since no space legs. ;)

For DW2 I went with notable modern astronomers: T6 Jocelyn Bell that will go to Beagle (and encounter many many pulsars up close), and Krait Phantom Andrea Ghez for the SagA* mining CG.

My daily drivers back in the bubble are currently AspX Jolly Coyote (so named upon application of the garishly festive holiday paint, which will probably be removed when I get back from DW2) and Krait II Lucky Zhuzha. I also have a flimsy Sidewinder Contents May Explode for trolling griefers and similar nonsense.

All of my ships’ class names are based off of snakes. Therefore,

Smol Snek - Sidewinder. Is smol and cute.

Top Snek - Cobra Mk III. Is agile and fast and is the ship that got me into all of the different activities. Therefore it is the best snek.

Jump Snek III - Asp Explorer. Died once to pirates and once to thargoids.

Pointy Snek - Python. It’s snoot is pointy. It also has big guns.

Spooky Snek - Exploration Phantom. Phantoms are spooky.

Scary Snek - Core mining Phantom. Phantoms are scary.

No Step On Snek - Combat Krait (Mk II). You should not step on it.

Danger Noodle - Anaconda. Somewhat self-explanatory.

The only non-snek in my linup:
Unexpected Kanchō - ramming Orca. Look up “kanchō” if you dare.

Hm. Most of mine are currently unnamed as they’re there simply for collection. But the ones I do use are the following
Anaconda- Charon
AspX- Perigrination
Mamba- Stalker
Chieftain- Shepherd of Fire
Vulture- Nightmare Eyes!!!!
Type 7- Brick
Type 9- Petty Cash
Sidewinder- Jellyfish

Brick? The Type 7 is about my favorite ship so far- but I did justget started about 10 days ago. But I like it a lot.

I have a relatively small "fleet". Some of them parked back in the bubble. A few out at Colonia. I have no particular naming scheme. But many of my ship names reference sci-fi shows, books and other gaming sources, as well as my own quirky sense of humor.

I no longer have a Sidewinder. I traded it in for the first ship I spent a lot of time in -

Cobra Mk III: Blue Hayabusa

126029x1209.jpg

The name is in part based on the primary color of course. Hayabusa is the Japanese word for "Falcon". I've always considered the Cobra III the YT 1300 series (Millenium Falcon) of the Elite universe. It's mainly for light cargo. But you can do ANYTHING with it. It was the first ship I bought a custom paint job and a ship kit for. As well as heavily modified via engineering. So I wanted to name mine some variant of "Falcon" but not be obvious about it. "I don't know... fly casual!" :D

My next major purchase was a Vulture. I've since sold it. (Might buy another someday - good ship) But it's name at the time was Star Hawk. Both referencing an old toy I once owned and the fighter line from the 70s Buck Rogers show.

My next major purchase that's stayed with me is an Asp Explorer. I used her as a long range cargo ship for a few months, then made my first trip out to Colonia in her.

Asp Explorer: Far Horizon
148406x1201.jpg

Based on her original function - and the fact she could still fight while carrying cargo, I thought of the AspX as having the name "The 27th Rule of Acquisition" which just so happens to be, according to one of the DS9 novels: "There's nothing more dangerous than an honest businessman."
This was before in-game ship naming was a thing, though. And I discovered that the original name wouldn't fit. Darn. So just before I headed out to Colonia I renamed her the slightly boring, but thematically accurate name Far Horizon.

The next ship I bought was a goal I'd been working toward for a long time. Ever since I saw this ship design I fell in love with her. The Fer De Lance.

Fer De Lance: Minerva

The Minerva is named of course for the Roman version of the goddess Athena - a virtuoso in war. But what the name is REALLY a reference to is the main ship from the Anime Crusher Joe from the 80s. Always thought the Fer De Lance bore a resemblance to that ship.

I spent a LOT of time tricking out the Minerva. And I'm not yet done! But she definitely makes bounty hunting in the hazres fun!

For the next few ships, I'm not sure what was purchased when. But I do know I bought them all within about 3 months of each other.

The first is:

Imperial Eagle: Argent Angel

160375x1221.jpg

Definitely the FASTEST ship in my collection in real Newtonian Space. Not as fast as some I've seen. But she's getting there. When stripped down, she makes a simply AWESOME canyon racer! I can also use her to do the occasional data courier run. She needs no weapons for that sort of mission, so I don't carry them. Instead I rely on maneuverability and pure speed. Even if interdicted, there's NOTHING that can keep up with her that has the weapons to harm her. I've also tested her as an actual fighter in Hazres. But I've got a much better set of ships for that. But she certainly is exciting!

Speaking of canyon running - I've got a pair of stock Eagle IIs for that sort of thing - in anticipation of someday joining up with the racing circuit. One is in the bubble, and the other one is stored out at Colonia. They each have similar names, based on more or less the same source.

Eagle II: Screaming Metal
166190x4462.jpg

and -

Eagle II: Metal Hurlant
277151x9018.jpg

"Metal Hurlant" is the name of the French Magazine that became the basis of the American "Heavy Metal". And "Screaming Metal" is merely the more accurate translation of Metal Hurlant.
Both are simply A-rated stock Eagles, stripped down for canyon racing. I've had a lot of fun with these three ships. And wound up replacing all of them at least a couple of times each. But at least the re-buys are cheap!

Next are two recent purchases of mine that have not had full engineering done and are waiting for me to get back from Distant Worlds 2 to tinker with. The first is sitting out at Colonia, I'm not exactly sure of what use I'll put this ship to. But she seems a good all-rounder.

Krait MKII: Swordfish
714636x1372.jpg

When I got done with the paintjob and the custom ship kit, the first thing that came to mind as a name was Swordfish. I'm not really sure why. The only real reference it could be to is the Cowboy Bebop fighter of the same name - but it looks NOTHING like that ship. I don't know what to make of my mind sometimes... shrug

The other purchase is back in the bubble and I haven't done ANYTHING with it other than give it a custom black paint scheme.

Imperial Courier: Avanti
340687x1790.jpg

The name Avanti is a reference to something personal. My father passed on to me a love of old classic cars. Including Studebakers and British sports cars.
Avanti is a reference to the Studebaker Avanti - a car truly ahead of its time and one my dad loved. Here's to you, dad.

And lastly - the flagship of my fleet. An Anaconda that is currently the ship I'm using on the Distant Worlds 2 Expedtion.

Anaconda: Azhanti High Lightning
283256x1676.jpg

At times she's been configured as a full combat build, at others an armored trader. Currently she's in full exploration build. Made as light as possible and Frameshift drive maxed out with a Guardian FSD booster. She's just shy of 60LY range. But only because I also have both Repair and Fueling Limpets aboard. I'm one of the Fleet engineers - the Hull Seals (arf arf!) people you can call to repair your hull if you get in a scrape. I'm not officially part of the Fuel Rats, but if you need it, I can top off your fuel tank while I'm repairing your ship. :)

The name is a reference to an old Sci-Fi RPG called Traveller. Azhanti High Lightning is the name of a ship (in lore) and an actual game supplerment. If I ever get a second Conda and split up the roles so that one is always an exploration ship and one is always a combat ship, then the second one will be named "Arrival Vengeance".

BTW - are spoiler tags working? They don't seem to be working for my view. If you're seeing full-size images in my post above, let me know and I'll change the image links to just links.

EDIT: Thanks r0ckhat. That helped a lot.

The Swordfish looks like the Malinium Falcon from star wars :) They all look nice actually, in my Viper Mark III the only thing in Solo it can't kill is the Anaconda, the Fer De Lance is no problem for it- so far in solo. Except the Cops ships of course.

What have you named your ships and why?

Curious minds want to know...

Federation Corvette, PVE Combat - Thunder Child, in homage to the torpedo ram from War of the Worlds.

Anaconda - (Multi-purpose utility and mission ship mostly for gathering engineer materials of all varieties) Argo, another homage, the ship from the Greek epic Jason and the Argonauts

Type 10 Defender - Narcissus, a hunter from Greek myth, one of my favourite characters

All my big ships are named for classical literature, or elements therein. My medium ships are named for classic music.

Krait Phantom, Trader/Smuggler - Proud Mary

Cobra IV (I know, not medium, one exception), also Trader/Smuggler - Mustang Sally

These are just examples. I have a bunch of others as well.

Then there are my exploration ships, which are named more after concepts and ideas related to travelling and pathfinding.

AspX - Soul Herald

DiamondbackX - Pathfinder

Viper III (yes, I have made an exploration Viper III) - Voidwalker

Combat ships I tend to take inspiration from warbirds and warships from WWII, but I mix it up with the occasional random name from pop-culture:

Eagle II - Hellcat

Diamondback Scout - Infernus (it's a plasma DBS, for PVP, people who play GTA V will get the name here)

FDL - Starscream (PVP, inspired by Transformers, because when you're not winning, run away ^_^)

Passenger ships I name similarly to exploration ships

Dolphin - Sundance

Orca - Starlark

Again, all just examples. I'm not going to provide an extensive list of ALL my ships because... well, there are a lot, all similarly named. I like to stick to themes but don't always. For example, some of my ships are named for people close to me that no one will understand except myself.

Sidewinder -> Maschine muss fliegen
Cobra MKIII -> Beta-Geraet
DBX -> Neuschwabenland
FDL -> e Bertha
Anaconda -> Grosse Freiheit
APX -> Starscream
Viper MKIV -> Wuerger
Dolphin -> K.P. Stenshorn
T-9 -> Schwerer Gustav II
Eagle MKII -> Merlin
Vulture -> Wilde Sau

Cobra mk III, wireframe paintjob: Old Faithful - the Elite ship

Asp Explorer, various paintjobs: Oops Exploder - extreme lightweight build used in Buckyball racing, no return expeditions & such, tends to get blown up one way or another

Asp Explorer, wireframe paintjob: Lostpath Wayfarer - main exploration ship

Anaconda, wireframe paintjob: Rogue Asteroid - mission runner, occasional miner, named after Anaconda description in the original Elite manual
In trader parlance, the Anaconda is built as strong as a rogue asteroid, and steers like one.

Federal Corvette, chrome paintjob: Typhoon of Steel - for the occasional pew pew, name of a WW II strategy game I played a lot on C64

Imperial Cutter, gold paintjob: Pompous Scow - for bulk trading, especially trading CGs

Bonus round: Nostalgia for Infinity is my all time favourite sci-fi ship name - maybe it conveys the call of void that makes me explore

Cobra Mk III: Devil's Advocate (used for some bounty hunting).

Orca: Margaret Ives (named after my mom).

Imperial Courier: Fred's Chariot (named after my dad's golf cart the college purchased for him when he was their school photographer to get him around the campus).

Krait Mk II: Pandora (opens a box of trouble for Thargoids).

Python: Grumpy Miner (because he's Grumpy - used for asteroid mining).

Anaconda: Anubus (because the Egyptian god of the dead should be the one taking you there).

In order of acquisition ...

Hissing Sid - Sidewinder
- It's the name of a character from a novelty record that was a thing in the 1980s when I was at school and when I played original Elite. Seemed appropriate for a Sidewinder.)

Y Ddraig Ddu - Cobra MkIII
- It's "The Black Dragon" in Welsh. It uses the Midnight Black paint job (of course).

Quia Scientiae - Asp Explorer
- This is my original Canonn Research ship and the vessel that got me Elite Explorer rank. The name is Latin and translates to "For Science".

Spadille - Python
- In card games "Spadille" is another name for the Ace of Spades. This ship also has a Midnight Black paint job.

No More Mr Nice Guy - Viper MkIV
- I got this ship for fun to practice combat, the name comes from one of the AI Ships in Iain M Banks' "Culture" novels.

Knight Errant - FDL
- A fairly straightforward name this one. It's primarily a combat ship, but I made sure it had a reasonable jump range so it can also wander a bit.

Vasuki - Krait MkII
- Vasuki is a nagaraja, one of the King Serpents of Hindu and Buddhist religion.

Nipper - Eagle MkII
- Another ship I got for fun, just to do stupid stuff in. I called it Nipper because it's tiny and it bites yer ankles!

The Seeker - Krait Phantom
This is my current long-range explorer. It was named for a song. Depending who you ask it might be a Who song... or a Steve Earle song... or an ABBA song... or a Dolly Parton song... take your pick.

Since my last post, I've got myself a Vulture.

'cause it flies kinda like a bigger, tougher, slightly slower courier, I've called it the Hornet (to match my courier, the Hoverfly)
