Ship names?

'Vette = Sarten Obliterator4335
Exploraconda = Vakory Scout4335

These names being a deference to the old MBBS game Galactic Empire. I could have named the corvette 'Cyberquad 4335', but the SOb's were harder to kill.
Kids these days. With your things like 'graphics', and 'colors'. We played in black and white ANSI text. Playing consisted of a lot of text commands and macros. A lot of scans, rotates, warp or war factors, orbits. Planet hunting, maintaining and building was slog. Had to find the enough random dudes on planets, move them to something better.

Name: SS Winter's War, Ship: Federal Corvette, color: Tactical Ice

Reason: I just like the name

Name: SS Nautilus, Ship: Asp Explorer, Color: White Pharaoh

Reason: Lots of them, first Nuclear powered submarine, Jules Verne reference but really it's because the Chambered Nautilus is like a jet engine under water, and I thought it sounded cool. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/23/science/chambered-nautilus-jet-propulsion.html

Name: Drakkar, Ship: Krait MK II, Color: Stock
Reason: Drakar is the name for a Viking lead ship (usually with a Dragon carved into the bow to instill fear into enemies as it approaches)

Name: SS Manta Ray, Ship: Viper MKIV, Color: Stock
Reason: The front reminds me of it's ocean counterpart

Name: SS Foxhound, Ship: Federal Gunship, Color: stock
Reason: Metal Gear reference

Name: SS Halcyon, Ship Diamondback Explorer, Color Stock
Reason: Real ship that was sunk by a German U109 during World War II. Historical ship, information here: http://ericwiberg.com/2014/08/ss-ha...n-feb-1942-27-men-rescued-by-british-prestige

Name: Ingrid - IMC, Ship: Python, Color: Military Blue
Reason: My primary mining vessel, old norse name that translates to beautiful goddess, it's hearty name is fitting because she weathers those frosty pristine ice rings while farming those precious resources.

Mine include but aren't limited to.

  • Adder - Wilson Accountant; because it was the only one of its type at Planet Wilson.
  • Alliance Challenger - Bovington; home of the tank museum.
  • Alliance Chieftain - StarHopper; from a ship in Space Viking and it looks a bit like a frog from above.
  • Anaconda - Oakley; from the 19th century sharp shooter.
  • Cobra MkIII - Lazy 8; the infinity symbol and links to various SF ships.
  • Orca - Caroline Munro; for the girl in the rum adverts because I got the ship for a rum running CG.
  • Mamba - Monica; from the song Mambo No.5.
  • Krait Phantom - Spectre; because I wanted something ghostly.
  • Fer de Lance - Aurora; convoluted link back to a canal holiday back in the 1960s.
  • Fer de Lance - Britannia; from the ship in Galactic Patrol and because it is in black (or vice versa).
  • Imperial Courier - Michael Strogoff; from the Jules Verne novel.
  • Type 10 - Tiny; slightly less convoluted link back to a canal holiday back in the 1960s and irony.
  • Dolphin - Streaker; for the ship in the uplift novel.
  • Type 7 - Delta 7; for the mercury mission that didn't happen.

Over 100 players responded to this thread and I wanted to express my appreciation for that:- That is Awesome!!!
There seems that there really is no theme to naming ships, like star trek names or other SciFi shows.

With that I have decided to name mine dependent on the task they perform more than anything else so:

Sidewinder: ID: TKE-01 Name: Alpha Unit(The beginning).
Viper Mark III ID: TKE-02 Name: Viscous Viper(My main Gunner/Black Box Recovery ship- at the moment).
Type 7 Transport ID: TKE-03 Name: Orion(Multi role, Mining/Transport missions(Includes Scarab), might try adding cabins for passengers I keep the different modules in storage till needed).
The ID's are more important to me than the name really- they are the order that they were purchased/used.

*After reading how many ships so many of you have, my next and obvious question is do you keep them all at the same station(Home Station) or do you have them spread out based on Exploration/Mining areas(Secret) stuff like that?

**Again thank you all for your responses they were inspiring to say the least.

I normally keep mine at the same location along with all the modules.

I have given that some thought, it seems to me that doing it that way(Some have 75+ ships) is like an anchor keeping you in one place(area)- does that hinder your exploring or searching for the "Stuff" needed for the researchers?
Given that I suppose the singular way of logging in to only one choice of "Where you parked last" makes it a thing. I would like to see the ability to build bases on planets/moons and not only that but be able to login to the choices you have- what do you say?

Heresiarch - Corvette - Heavy duty bouncer
Berkut - Anaconda - Fast skirmisher
Bluebird - Asp - Small very fast general purpose
Xenophobe - Vulture - Small Thargoid killer
Tarkus - Python - Specialist passenger carrier, one specific run.
Geomancer - Cutter - Miner
Heart of Darkness - Anaconda - Explorer
Cetus - Cutter - Hauler
Skylark - Anaconda - Large very fast general purpose
Wraith - Anaconda - Low emissions smuggler
Xenophage - Python - Medium Thargoid killer
Karma - Cutter - Large Thargoid Killer

All but one usually at Jameson Memorial.

Yes.

Many are at a home in the bubble, some are at a location in the Pleiades the rest are either where I last used them or parked up on bricks near an engineers of one sort or another.

So to get to one of your storage locations you have to fly there or transfer to your current location- correct?
What's your opinion on this: Link

Yes I use my smaller longer ranged ships as taxis they aren't too expensive to call to my location and large jump range gives fast travel. But that is in the bubble area if I was going to Colonia I would plan on adapting my most expensive ship I wanted to take for better travel and fly that then call or buy smaller ships on arrival.

Another option is the disposable taxi, buy a hauler and A rate the FSD fly to your destination and call your ship when it arrives sell the taxi.

Lots of mine are named after Asturian (NW Spanish) mythological creatures:

Diañu - Fer de Lance (exploration)
Nuberu - Chieftain (combat - Anaconda killer)
Ayalga - Challenger (exploration)
Trasgu - Imperial Eagle (racer)
Xanina - Sidewinder (racer)
Duendecito (this one is regular Spanish) - Viper Mk III
Guaxa - Asp Scout (explorer / light combat)
Sumiciu - Viper Mk IV (combat - bounty hunter)
Busgosu - Imperial Courier (combat - bounty hunter)
Grumante - Mamba (racer / exploration)

A couple are named after places that are significant to me:

Firth of Forth - Type 7 (passenger craft - Colonia based)
Ravenscraig Castle - Type 7 (passenger craft - Bubble based)
Playa de Rodiles - Type 6 (exploration / runabout)

But most have more random names:

Danger Zone - Corvette (anti-thargoid)
Midnight Vagrant - Beluga (exploration)
Questing Quail - Viper (survey)
Curious Cricket - DBS (survey)
Flocon de Neige - Asp X (multirole)
Silverheart - Asp X (runabout)
Pink Panther - Python (miner)
Lady Penelope - DBX (long-distance travel)
Funnelweb - DBX (runabout / sniper)
Tread Softly - Hauler (exploration)
Rangdo of Arg - Krait Mk II (exploration)
Lux Aeterna - FGS (exploration)
Chrysaetos - Eagle Mk II (canyon play / racer)
Pesky Gnat - Eagle Mk II (intended for PvP, at some point)
Captain Louis Nolan - Sidewinder (cannon fodder)
Liberator - Imperial Clipper (combat)
Icarus Ibis - Cobra Mk III (exploration)

Sweet! Just curious- seems most players keep every ship they ever had, I can see having different configuration of the best of the three sizes but is it just nostalgia or asset value behind this?

Some of my ships have a lot of nostalgia value, I part-exchanged my first few ships back in 2015 (when money was not so readily available) but I still own the AspX I did my first big trip (to SagA*) in, my first Conda hull that got me to Exploration Elite has gone through several refits & is now a 75ly self-sustained explorer again, The Python that got me to Combat Elite in CZs is still my go-to CZ workhorse, the Cobra MkIII that got me to Trade Elite is still in my fleet. And my first Corvette is the one I spent 18 months travelling around the galaxy in and took to Beagle Point.

All but the AspX still see regular use though, albeit because I have them rather than necessarily because they are the best for the job any more.

Thanks I was just curious about it, some have over 75 ships and I really didn't understand that. Like my sidewinder I am not sure I will ever use it again but being so new I still have it- there may be a reason for it that I don't know of yet.
Thanks.
