Ship names?

Thanks I was just curious about it, some have over 75 ships and I really didn't understand that. Like my sidewinder I am not sure I will ever use it again but being so new I still have it- there may be a reason for it that I don't know of yet.
Thanks.

IIRC I have 54, maybe 55 ships (I recently bought a T-10). Several are taxis but I have a few Sidewinders and they are cheap as chips so if you don't need to sell your first (and think you may regret it later because of nostalgia) then name it something memorable & keep it for future use. With Advanced Thrusters they can become useful again later in the game, or at least can be put to good use as an explorer or scout.

Yes I use my smaller longer ranged ships as taxis they aren't too expensive to call to my location and large jump range gives fast travel. But that is in the bubble area if I was going to Colonia I would plan on adapting my most expensive ship I wanted to take for better travel and fly that then call or buy smaller ships on arrival.

Another option is the disposable taxi, buy a hauler and A rate the FSD fly to your destination and call your ship when it arrives sell the taxi.
My OCD just HAD to come up with a naming convention because I have 35 of them, and stuff started overlapping. Still short a few unique ships, like the Beluga and the two scouts (DB/Asp) so I might have to go back over the ID system to free up some numbers. These two probably won't change again:

SIX07B (Hauler) PLANET COAST 01
SIX should be obvious, 0 (zero) is the pad size (small), 7 is a unique fleet number, B is the usage - 'Bodies' aka passengers. Blue engine / weapon detailing. Paint job: Midnight Black.

SIX08B (Adder) PLANET COAST 02
SIX again obvious, 0 (zero) is the pad size (small), 8 is a unique fleet number, B is the usage - 'Bodies' aka passengers. Blue engine / weapon detailing. Paint job: Midnight Black.

Two dedicated taxis that COAST between PLANETs (nod to other franchises).

The logic: Its cheaper to fly a big ship to deploy it yourself and call a cheap one to you for the return trip. Being able to send a ship ahead of you would be better (of course FDev, I'm looking at you!) but you can always make that the last trip of the session, sleep then fly back after the transfer.

Both ships were sourced and built to utilise the 15% Li Yong-Rui discount with D Class parts for optimal mass against lowest possible prices to further reduce the transfer costs, except for the Class A FSD and B Fuel Scoop. Both are also fully engineered to G5 max with roughly 40Ly range.

To alleviate the tedium of farming Datamined Wake Exceptions, both vessels feature a handy scanner so on leaving any given dock they can check all local FSD wakes before leaving the system. This habit formed in an earlier engineers patch so, all my non-combat ships have wake scanners.

May also come in handy if hyperdicted now the thargoids are inside the bubble.

Law Giver - Krait MkII I use for hunting bounties and other miscreants.
Errand Of Mercy - Type 9 Heavy that carries 720 units of cargo. I usually haul basic medicines to non-industrial systems in the grip of an outbreak.

If you're going to do that, try selling them to stations recently (this week) attacked by Thargoids that are still burning, or the nearby rescue ships. Prices seem to be ridiculously inflated by the emergency demand, as in price gouging insanity with thousands of percent markups but, bring heatsinks ;)

Here are a few -

T6 - Trundle
Cobra 3 - Fussy Buzzer
Anaconda - Geraldine
Python - Pink Panther*
Python - Slice of Life (from Dexter)
Sidey - Ms SWAN (Ship Without A Name, and Pirates of the Caribbean)
Cobra 4 - Oh-Oh!
DbS - Kitty's Got Claws
DbX - Longbow
FAS - Lapsed Pacifist (from Ian M Banks)
Challenger - Fight or Flight

Tried that. I'm only about 4 jumps from Aulin. Man, the profits were INTENSE!!! Didn't have a heat sink, a mistake I'll not make again, but even with the 6k cr of damages it was still worth it. Sold the load for about 3.2 million for an investment of about 156k including the heat damages.

What I'm flying at the moment (or would be if I wasn't away...!):
Krait Mk II - Tiarknikufesin
Cobra IV - Participation Trophy (after another thread!) - kitted out with 6 SRVs ;)
Viper III - Only Pain
Chieftan - Didn't Bleed Red (Terrorvision song...)

Just added two ships to the fleet:
Dolphin: ID: TKE-04, Name: Eagle Lines.
Diamondback Explorer:
ID: TKE-05, Name: Dark Rising as in(Discoveries rising from the dark).

Here they are although the Dolphine is not white- didn't unpdate to EDSM correctly???

Sidey: Flashlight - bexause it's small, quick, maneuvrable ... and painted yellow :)
AspX: First Sight - due to it's explorer focus.
Python: at the biginning "Firestorm", because of full MC loadout with overcharged+incendiary and because I started to name all my ships beginning iwith "F". Later on, as my passenger Anaconda was ganked in Shinrarta, the Python was renamed into "Remember & Revenge". Ironically or strange, but at the same time I read the Elite books and got deeper into the story about Kahina Loren / Salome. I have started in the game as the event with her final fight and death was over. But that doen't prevent me from following her last wish/task "...Remember!" and add my own "Revenge" (for Kahina's death).
Explorer Anaconda: Searcher - because searching for guardians in the void. The best explorer ship for me, because I like to be fully equipped, to master every task needed out ther and to get back home.
Passenger/cargo Anaconda: firstly "Flame river" similar as Python - all MC + OC + IR. Sold it after understanding, that I'll be able to earn more money and have better surviving chances in the Open by flying the Python.
Imperial Clipper: Kahina's Phoenix - in memory of Kahina and in hope that she could be resurrected somehow. Why not - all that story about being able to copy her mind over the special pod and the commander, who seems to be a clone like Kahina was, mentioned at the end of one of the books.

Over 100 players responded to this thread and I wanted to express my appreciation for that:- That is Awesome!!!
There seems that there really is no theme to naming ships, like star trek names or other SciFi shows.

With that I have decided to name mine dependent on the task they perform more than anything else so:

Sidewinder: ID: TKE-01 Name: Alpha Unit(The beginning).
Viper Mark III ID: TKE-02 Name: Viscous Viper(My main Gunner/Black Box Recovery ship- at the moment).
Type 7 Transport ID: TKE-03 Name: Orion(Multi role, Mining/Transport missions(Includes Scarab), might try adding cabins for passengers I keep the different modules in storage till needed).
The ID's are more important to me than the name really- they are the order that they were purchased/used.

*After reading how many ships so many of you have, my next and obvious question is do you keep them all at the same station(Home Station) or do you have them spread out based on Exploration/Mining areas(Secret) stuff like that?

**Again thank you all for your responses they were inspiring to say the least.
Many at Founders, others here and there, mostly there.

I keep all mine in Fuel Rats HQ, Wollheim Vision in Fuelum, for the moment at least.

Now I’ve not seen that car for yonks! Used to have the toy version that had a great big wheel in the middle.

Asp X: Rambler which is a play on my last name Nash and what it does.
Dolphin: Trailways (working on a Beluga to be called Greyhound)
DBX: Texas Mosquito
Fed Dropship: Coffin
Krait MKII: Fnord
Python: George (because I can't say Sylvester)
Fed Dropship: Miner 2019
Cobra: Titanium Wedge

AspX - Siberia (space is vast and full of beauty)
Imp Clipper - Sotiria (I simply like the name and all my ships start with an S. There's also a singer who goes by that name, she's sexy, and so is the Clipper.)
Imp Cutter (MP) - The Siren (S, and for obvious reasons, she's been playing hard to get)
Imp Cutter (Hauler) - Skye
