News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

Thanks. I'm indecisive and expect to change the name of my ship on a regular basis. :)

How about also putting the ship name on the game loading screen?

Nine plates a pack, 3 dollars a pack, so a bit over 33 cents per plate variant/color. Right on the money, guys; I'm in. :) BTW, what roles do ship ID's play? Is it just an additional layer of customization, or is there something in the works for that?

Reasonably priced. I like the fact that it's for all ships.

I still believe that a basic font should be provided. I also think that some basic ship colors would be provided as well. It could be a little "thank you" to the community for all the support we've given. It would also help rebuild trust after this whole debacle.

Thanks for the offer.

But, just see the actual price of the decals.

Power play decals are free, and the others are at 1.25€.

The price of the name plate is x2 the price of a simple decal !

I don't see why my point is a ridiculous stance to take.

I don't see where is the logic on the price of the name plate.

If you can explain it to me, I'll happily accept the gift you offer me ;)

I'm ready to pay for this, its not a problem at all.

But I think the way the price is establish is not logical.
I think we must having a default decal for free with the ship name, avaliable for all, and a paid version, saying at 1.5€, for those who'd want to customize it.

No offense meant.

Did you say your monthly income was EUR 800? Is 1/320 of your monthly income really too much? The mandatory payments must be quite high in the country where you live.

While I have absolutely no intention to mock you for your health condition, I still have to admit that your using it as the grounds for your demands for free video game items fails to spark any sympathy at all in me.

That's a very reasonable decision IMHO.
The stuff that makes ship naming a useful feature is free for everyone.
And you can even see other peoples ship names if you scan them (most of the time you will be too far away to read a name plate anyway).
A small fee for cosmetic stuff like this is OK with me.

P.S.:
I will definitely buy one of the name plate packs whe they are out...

From the 2.3 beta patch notes.....

"If it's not our ship and they have no name plates, then we don't know the ship's name"

How on Earth did I miss that, I looked before posting and everything :p

Cheers.

To be fair, it's also stupid logic. Sure the ship doesn't have a nameplate, but it's also travelling at several times the speed of light, so they are hardly readable even if it did have one.

The logic was to tie the ship transponder signal to some paint sprayed on the side of the ship?

wait, why were people of the opinion that ship names would not be displayed in the HUD without buying name plates?
I have listened to all the QA streams, read all the patch notes and keep up with all dev posts in the forum and I have known for some weeks now that ship names will indeed be shown in the hud, vanity plates or not.

color me confused..

Edit:

oh, did not see that in the latest patch notes, however since the actual functionality has been known for a while I would have assumed that line in the latest patch notes was simply by mistake. Anyways, it is good that it is once again clear how everything works.

Hi Ed, thanks for the clarification, and I'm sorry you have to keep going around clearing up other people's communication messes.

FWIW, I'm completely fine with paint on ship costing money (you've established that precedent, and I've got $40 worth of paint jobs), I wasn't okay with a HUD UI gameplay element being based on real world cash.

Just to add to the general theme, I'm happy with this (whether or not it's a change).

Firstly, I'm only really interested in telling the difference between my own ships where I have more than 1 ship of any type. I can't be the only person with an Asp fully kitted for exploration and then a second for multi-purpose stuff in the bubble. I'm also not really interested in anything other than PvE, so ultimately this doesn't really affect me.

Having said that, and as many others have said, I think it'd be nice to have an absolute basic option included for free/included in the price of the game (depending on your view...). I'm thinking the equivalent of Arial size 10, no pics/decals of any type. However, even that basic nameplate option is cosmetic, and to be fair FD have been fairly consistent with their stance of functional is included, cosmetic is paid extra. Occasionally they've thrown out some "freebies" like the powerplay decals. I don't think that should be held against them though.

Showing in another player's HUD, I see that as clearly on the functional side of the line, and so I agree with pretty much everyone else that it was right to include that in the standard game, irrespective of additional purchases.

I'm trying not to focus on whether the HUD point is a change in FD's plans or not, and if so whether it suggests FD might be willing to stray from the functional/cosmetic divide in the future. I'm choosing to focus on their final decisions and actions. If they feel they need mega-threads of complaints to reach a sensible decision, that's on them.... :p

Edit: and to contradict myself, this is probably the first cosmetic item i'd consider buying. 1 pack applying to all ships seems much more reasonable than it being ship specific like the other cosmetics.

I like the way you can use one pack across all my ships.

Can we have customizable HUDS next please? Bigger fonts, simplified designs, mission/role specific etc.

...and Kraits, pretty please. [yesnod]

With a cherry on top.

Big thanks again for all the hard work FD.

Q.

The question, I was wondering is once a ship gets its official name, can other players call there ships the same name? or will it be a unique naming for each ship? cos I can see there are going to be lots of Starbugs, Enterprises, Rocinante, ect ect! lol

A bit less than I was expecting, that's nice. :) Might end up getting two in that case. Hope the flight suit packs are around that mark as well, although suspect they'll be about as much as the ship paint packs. :D

The in-game ship naming screen mentions that the names are not unique. Expect many Enterprises and such! :)
