News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

Wow. Do you mean that Ship IDs are set by the player and not generated by the game for a ship when you buy it ? Aren't they unique ?

There's a default ID, automatically generated. But you can change it.

The idea has been planted in Sandy's mind that traffic control could use this instead of the CMDR name. I think a lot of people like this idea. Including me.

Ok... I hate the fact that you can change it at will (Name and appearance as well...) but it's still nice to have it generated and feels kinda unique !

It's still beta, so it may change at any moment. But I have a strange feeling that if it becomes unique and non-editable, people will cry that they want a custom one. ;)

It would actually be cool if players change it according to their respective player group, for example:
Fuel Rats -> FLR-XX
SDC -> SDC-XX
Canonn -> CNN-XX

Or something..

Called it.

2.3 is still in beta. My gut feeling is that FD will drop the requirement for name plates for HUD visibility when 2.3 goes live if not before. In fact I almost suspect, even though they'll never admit it, that FD may have put this in beta just to test the waters. And from where I'm sitting those waters are starting to bubble away quite ferociously, increasing with every thread in which more players realise what might be coming.

FD make some odd decisions from time to time, and the price of some of the wholly optional cosmetics is insane, but I'd like to think they're smart enough to see which way things will go if they try to charge for a KS feature.
Of course I didn't use the word "clarification", but then I'm not in PR. ;)

Good decision whatever the motivation. Much of this game's momentum comes from the good will fostered between the community and the developers. Pay-for-visibility would have jeopardised that, while this will restore it. Built-in visibility, with payments for optional eye candy. You know it makes sense.

Really? That's odd. I mean I'm always prepared to be proved wrong, but it doesn't say that in any of the patch notes.

Ship Naming
Added ship name plates to ships
Added ID plates to ships
Ships can be named from within station services
Added ship names to various cockpit UI
Added hangar cameras for ship name slots
Request ship name when in the start new commander flow
Name and ID plates can be added via Outfitting
Ship names are server moderated if deemed inappropriate then will be masked off to other players
If it's not our ship and they have no name plates, then we don't know the ship's name
If you report a player in-game, we'll now fill in their ship name and ship ID for you

There ya go. They changed their stance, its all good now, water under the bridge and all that.

That doesn't change the fact that marketing have nothing to do with this.

Sorry, I had no idea you worked there.

When it comes to a cash shop, in what way doesn't marketing have a role in all of this?

I take it when you buy your cherished full-fat milk from Tescos that paying £2 for 2 litres when it is on offer has nothing to do with marketing?

Stop making me use the rep thing.

I love it as well but I feel that it should not be editable.

I would like to suggest that those currently embroiled in arguments with the very small number of people who are arguing for the continued monetorisation of the game, to just put them on Ignore. They're arguing with you because they know they'll get a rise out of it. It just isn't worth it.

I think the pricing is... maybe a little high for just 3 designs, but it's not exactly causing immediate poverty. I DO object to the whole 'supporting game development' crap tho - we all know that isn't the case anymore, companies on the stockmarket don't need supporting. Please don't underestimate your customer's intelligence. It's simply a revenue stream, nothing more.

Wether it was always intended as this and the information was just misunderstood, or Frontier simply listened to their customers, thank you for not doubling down on this.

Thanks for the offer.
But...
So you don't want it?
Power play decals are free, and the others are at 1.25€.
So?
The price of the name plate is x2 the price of a simple decal !
Again, so?
I don't see why my point is a ridiculous stance to take.

I don't see where is the logic on the price of the name plate.
Just because you don't understand the decision, doesn't immediately discount it
If you can explain it to me, I'll happily accept the gift you offer me ;)
So now you do want it? :p
I'm ready to pay for this, its not a problem at all.
Then why are you arguing that the price is not acceptable?
But I think the way the price is establish is not logical.
I think we must having a default decal for free with the ship name, avaliable for all, and a paid version, saying at 1.5€, for those who'd want to customize it.

Where is your cost model and financial data to back this claim up?
It seems like all your claims come down to "I want it for free. It should be free."

But, just see the actual price of the decals.

You get 3 decals in a pack, you get 9 nameplates. So by your logic, that is a saving :p

There ya go. They changed their stance, its all good now, water under the bridge and all that.

It was already mentioned to me, but yes thanks.

Sorry I don't shop at Tesco. Never have, never will. Not that it's a fair comparison to what now looks like what Jack said. Name plates were always going to be paid for, the visibility to other players is a design decision.

It seems like all your claims come down to "I want it for free. It should be free."

And that has been the sole argument for all the complainers on this thread.

£2 is an insignificant cost - it won't get you a pint in most pubs in the UK nor a coffee for that matter but the way some people are reacting, it's as if they have been forced to hand over their life savings.

Seriously folks, get some flipping perspective.
