News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

Good move. I like that. Looking forward to name my ship finally!
Great work FDevs. [up]

Edit:

A big applause for the community and the people who were so relentless raising questions.
Great job, folks![yesnod]

Can't rep you again, so here's a virtual-virtual one.

It's like they're intentionally rewriting how this all went down. But they should know better.
They're being quite cheeky but at least some of us will always know the truth. In any case, thanks to FD for listening to us and making the change :)

Allow me to enlighten you as to what actually went down.

Basically here's what happened:

FD was going to release the feature of ship names with a built in pay wall, i.e. you needed to pay for a nameplate livery in order for other people to see your ships name. As stated in the initial 2.3 Beta change log:

Just to fully complete your appraisal you neglect to mention that prior to the Beta starting, they had said other people could see your ships name by default. That was the start and end position. Not disputing anything that happened in between but you can't tell a story and leave out the start.

Do you have a link?

Thank you very much for that Ed!

Marketing team? You really don't pay attention.

I am amazed at how quickly this community have been jumping on things recently. Throughout the entire process it has always been said that others could see your ship name (unless it was deemed obscene), then last night during answering over 120 questions Sandro said something that conflicted with previous information.

So what happens? Do people wait for things to be discussed the next working day? No, they fly off the handle as though the sky was falling in and the world was about to explode. All the people in this thread saying that this "change" was the right decision have completely missed the point it wasn't a change. They weren't caving to the community, it was a slip on a livestream by a developer who had taken his own time to engage with us.

You all seriously need to take a long hard look at yourselves, because the attitude over the last few months is getting ridiculous!

Well said. This sums up my opinion as well. Perhaps playing without VR has made people lose perspective ![haha]
[haha]

I believe the position was always that everyone could see each other's ship names in scans and it was always visible to the owner. However name plaques were to be a paid feature.

Pretty much how I understood it but it's nice to have it explained for those people that seek outrage where there is none.

I didn't know that was the start of the story. Can you provide a link to where they said that?

Thanks Ed, an excellent decision by FD there.

Ship naming is very important to me and in fact, all of my ships have been named in third party tools from the start so purchasing nameplates from the store was always on the cards for me. Glad to see it usable across all ships, including the variants and so reasonably priced. I hope there's going to be a few designs with just the text without a logo and that the nameplates also won't block the use of the other side decals on the hull.

It's great to know that ship names will be visible to others on scanning and not tied to the presence (or otherwise) of a nameplate. This is a sensible and fair choice, as the ship's name would be read from the transponder regardless of whether or not there was a visible name on the hull. I expect many commanders operating on the fringes of the law would want, like Han Solo, to avoid such obvious visual identification. Keeping the nameplates as a purely cosmetic feature will also really help serious players and roleplayers to express themselves and build their own character's story, as the ship kits and paintjobs currently do.

Have you seen the stream where Sandro specifically stated the opposite?

I'm guessing not?

Sandro : You will have to pay for all name plates, there are no free name plates.

Q : Is it true that the only way for a ship name to show up on another person's scan is if you've purchased a name plate from the shop?

Sandro : Yes.

I mean you can't be much clearer right?

All I can say is that the pitchfork-and-torch attitude over $3 nameplates over the past couple of weeks, especially when it's a feature we've all been living fine without up to this point, has been utterly absurd. *looking at you, redditors*

Sandro even said in the stream we might possibly obtain cosmetic items as a reward for something, but it's like nobody even noticed amidst all the rabbling, spinning, and ranting....

Ah well. Good damage control, Ed!

I still wouldn't mind if a basic nameplate was available for everyone for free, and only fancy ones for money. That's how it's done properly. But hey, this looks better than what they've planned to do previously. And for only few bucks...I guess it's kind of alright.

It's almost like people were raging on the basis of completely uninformed speculation but of course that never happens...

I mean where's the speculation, Sandro couldn't have been any clearer, the answer was a literal yes.

Ed's "In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI."

is a turnaround thanks to the community push back, please don't ridicule it, it's a good thing. Players have gained here. A legitimate gameplay feature will no longer be paywalled, this is good for players and good for the game.

No child throwing a tantrum should be given praise.

You understand the "community" is a group of individuals who don't know each other right. While some throw a tantrum others are trying to coherently put their point across.

While others focus on the tantrums aspect and use that to undermine everyone.

Regardless of how people expressed themselves I'm glad they did. I'd rather it rational and well argued, but because some throw a wobbly, it doesn't mean the community didn't do the right thing in pushing back.

I am glad of it.
