News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

I watched the full video stream before even looking at what's been going on here and on reddit. I thought it rather obvious Sandro meant being able to literally see ship names on player's physical ships, not through the UI.

Live Stream said:
"Is it true that the only way for your ship name to show up under another person's scan is if you've purchased a nameplate...?"

"Yes."

"another person's scan"

"person's scan"

If you genuinely interpreted this to mean flying up to someone else's physical ship and eyeballing the hull, then it actually does explain a great deal of what's been so frustrating about reading your arguments for the past several hours.

Most of it makes some sort of sense now. Thank you for clarifying.

Clarification!? Good grief, man, I'm genuinely struggling to understand your utter failure to parse the timeline here. Bitstorm has already quoted and linked to all the pertinent bits and it's not as though it's complicated:

  • Patch Notes for 2.3 beta stated that ship names would not be visible without nameplates.
  • The first stirrings of a community backlash began.
  • When asked, Sandro confirmed that names would not be visible without purchasing a nameplate.
  • The backlash gathered pace.
  • Ed "clarified" that a nameplate purchase would not be needed in order to see ship names.
How can you see that as anything other than a huge breakdown in communication at best, or a complete U-turn at worst?

Holy yodelling Christ on a flaming unicycle, are you serious? A large part of the community's frustration in all this was that, prior to Ed starting this thread, none of us had the first sniff of a clue how much the damned things would cost. Seriously, are you like one of those Deep Space Nine wormhole aliens who perceive time in a non-linear way? It's about the only explanation for the anachrony of some of your arguments.

This.

And they made a mistake by making NPC´s ship names visible. That was the problem. Nobody would have even discussed this feature without the ship names of NPCs appearing in the HUD.

I was assuming a bug - but it looks like it was intentional.

Nickle and dime me once, shame on you.
Nickle and dime me twice, shame on me.
Nickle and dime me eight times, even more shame on me.
No more, i will not be nickle and dimed for the ninth time.

Jokes aside, 3 eur seems pretty reasonable for an addon that matters. This does not.
I will not be paying any money for my ships name to show up. Jesus on skates, people, this and MANY more things are a given in any multiplayer game! How is this a legitimate micro-transaction??
What next, all new ships will be sold for real cash? HUD color options that we can pay for?

No thanks, your Horizons release was a slimy slap to anyone who already had the base game so no thanks, you dont deserve any more of my money.

P.S. I am just glad they did not expect us to submit two forms and wait for 6 months for that name to be placed on our ships. That is LITERALLY what is happening when you submit a request for a minor faction name. Six. Months.
Maybe instead of nickle and diming your userbase, you should focus on getting your together and providing us with service worth paying for. Dont be sheeple, make your voices be heard with your wallets.

Seems to me you basically have no idea what you're talking about, but you're really angry about it.
Half your post is assuming on assumption(bold parts) that have no base on reality.

One thing is sure, you're going to not buy from the Store vanities anymore.
Thanks for telling us, I guess?

What we should be happy is how things are, and not making a whole case on what-ifs and what-nots.
If anything, seeing FD had a change of mind (or clarification as they put it) means they aren't disconnected from the user base but listen to it.

Want to see total disconnection? try to google for that other space game...

Not cheap. Smart. I do not feel like rewarding a crappy business practice. Having a name on your ship in a space game is the norm. You dont see EVE charging for that, do you? Above all, i am not going to pay my 3 bucks to pay a dev that is so disconnected with their userbase. A dev that takes almost a year to place a minor faction name in the game, dumps all of their attention only in one aspect of the game (screw trading and exploration, its all about the dogfighting), hitches their story lines on ridiculous and exclusive easter egg hunts, -teasing us for over a year to finally give us some actual content (aliens) yet never really giving them. Everyone was expecting to be shooting at Thargoids by now. Where the are they? Give money to a company that takes away one gameplay feature to introduce another - as soon as you have any crew in your multicrew ship, you are no longer allowed to join wings. Yeah, no. Think not.

P.S. Bragging about your porcsche while calling people cheap is like Trump getting a "small" loan of a million dollars. Makes you a bit of a douchenozzle, dont you think?

ooooo cheap and nasty and considering you missed the intended irony of my post we can rule out smart.

DOH!

I might agree, except in beta I saw soooo many Pythons called "Monty" it started to get a bit um... tiresome.

For those that don't know, a Kipper is an English breakfast food. It's a smoked herring eaten hot for breakfast. Something not as common as it used to be. Mainly because when they are cooked they smell. A lot.

It is very tasty though. The breakfast of champions!

Made an icon of popular culture by the series Red Dwarf, in the episode "Dimension Jump" where the alternate, heroic, version of Arnold Rimmer "Ace" told the crew "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!".

Hi everyone,

There’s been a number of questions from Commanders regarding ship naming and how ship name plates will work so we wanted to give you a little more information about how these features will work when they’re released.

In-game ship naming

When you have named your ship in-game, your ship name will appear in multicrew grouping and in your HUD. In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI. This feature will be available for all players of Elite Dangerous (both base game and Horizons players) including Xbox One, upcoming PS4 release and PC Commanders.

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

Thanks!

Fair.

An earlier clarification would have avoided much of the unnecessary criticism.
I am not sure if what Sandro said during the live stream was a mistake or if FD has done an about turn, not the high point of ... well whatever ....

I really don't want to explain it yet again, I mean people keep explaining the issue over and over again, but it is not about the cost. I also think it's a bit off blaming "the forum" for how this has played out.

I'm not going by what you said:

Jack here was going on about the cost, so hence I replied about the cost......so next time look at what I'm replying to before you quote me. And no it's not off blaming the forums for how this played out. I've seen it time and again that a storm has played out on these forums because of some reason or another, worst example that sticks in my my mind........Steam Keys.

You can name all your ships individually. The nameplate itself (the cosmetic item you buy in the store which displays your ship name) is however useable on all your ships (i.e. you don't have to buy one for each ship).

The feeling has been mutual, CMDR.
