Ship naming filter at it again

Ok, so i have a green spangly Krait Mk.II, that i named 'Cucumber' and the name is banned. It won't show up in game as it is offensive due to three letters in the middle of the name. Really??? Seriously??? The naming filter in game is overly sensitive, this just proves it yet again. Oh we musn't offend anyone , we must all be politically correct. Well here's a newsflash for you, i'm offended. I'm offended at the over zealous naming filter, which if i wanted to, i could get past really easily, but i'm not that childish.

Anyway, back on point. So my ship name is banned for being named after a vegetable for god's sake. While i'm seething over this in game, i'm flying around doing stuff when i came across this system. And this isn't offensive at all is it?

I 100% agree with your sentiment.

Genuine Freedom of Speech is of critical importance for all of us. It should be for governments to decide what is acceptable or not. It is a massive over-reach and a huge problem right now that tech companies are becoming a censor, its not their role. Companies like Google are moving from being private companies to being utilities like water, gas, etc, essential for daily life and something really needs be done to bring them into line.

For Elite, however:

1. I think that there could be a more fine-grained filter system that is in the options. Let people decide on an individual basis:
1.1 No filter
1.2 Filter on the most "offensive" words the various slurs that most offend political correctness
1.3 Full family-friendly filter which includes regular swear/curse words.
Let people choose, censorship is an evil and its good to give people the option what they see. Things that are seriously out-of-whack are a crime in the UK anyway.

2. This issue es a lot of people off and it did affect me. I named my ship "Agamemnon's Vengeance" and no amount of changing the wording, abbreviations, etc could I get the name to not be All ****. I did actually submit a ticket to support about this. They told me that some sequence was a swear word in another language. They then whitelisted my ship name which was excellent of them. So I would definitely a try support ticket which would likely fix your particular issue.

3. The current system is much too sensitive. It definitely needs tweaked, really aught be much more permissive with bans on names coming in on a report/complaint basis rather than going thru the dictionary and picking words out then creating a regular expression, do it for every language and make that the filter which seems to be current state of things. We can add a more sophisticated naming filter to our wishlist of fixes needed/bugs but its not really high priority.

So, I agree with you, there are solutions to this problem, it needs changing, but its not top of the list. My 2 cents anyway.

Signing off,

CMDR Gavin786

*** ACTUALLY: It is something that is not well-known in the community but Frontier DO have a WHITELIST of ship names and they will add your ship name to it if you raise as SUPPORT TICKET. Could be worth putting an update on your post if you try this and it works for you.

My only issue with raising a ticket over this, is that it may or may not get answered, and i very much doubt i'd get a reply much before Christmas. Notice i used the word 'Christmas', hopefully somebody will get upset about that as well lol

By the way, that still doesn't explain the system name in my picture i posted. That's a lot worse than my ship name

I had a similar issue with a banned ship name when nameplates first came out (so with the old ticket system), which was sorted out in a day or so.
Give it a go with a ticket, the new system is supposed to be a bit more efficient.

Actually, censorship of any form runs counter to the fundamental principle of freedom of speech. Genuine freedom of speech is also freedom to offend, entertain, amuse, or educate. Arguably, even at a government level it is an overreach and abuse of power.

However, since the start of the rise of Political Correctness there have been issues with extreme censorship by Western governments in general and in a few cases they hold media distributors to account for what others publish via their mechanisms and therefore effectively mandate that the relevant media distributors impose censorship or potentially face consequences for not doing so (especially if there is a real world impact to what is published). In some cases this is justified, but in alot of cases it is probably not.

That being said, what FD are doing with ED is in accordance with their EULA/ToS and you agree to those conditions when you choose to engage with ED. Due to language differences, regional slang, and other concerns there are bound to be cases where something seemingly innocuous from a given person's perspective gets filtered out and others seemingly more insulting from their perspective do not.

If anyone encounters a case where they believe FD have inappropriately filtered (or not filtered) something, then perhaps they should take it up with FD directly via a support ticket.

As for the system name "Turd Wu", I see nothing wrong with it despite the English slang usage of the term Turd. Context is everything, for example you should look at some of the names of places across the UK and Europe as a whole.

That's a lot worse than my ship name. If i called my ship Turd Wu, that would never get through the filter, thereby creating a paradox. As to town names being offensive, again i agree, there's a small village in Wiltshire called C u c k o o' s K n o b, (filter already kicked in), bet that wouldn't get through the ED filter either. Dreithar is right, need a filter toggle that we choose, where it's up to us to decide if we want to see silly names or not. Plenty of other games do this

Considering some "creative" CMDR Names I've seen (clearly rated R or far worse) and some System Names... I wonder why there isn't a simple global ON/OFF filter.

Comms has that setting, so why not for everything else.

PS.
The last funny NPC I saw was flying for (generic Faction procgen) of Yum Caca.
I'm like....dudes haha, seriously?

Look guys, it's... a period of inoffensiveness, the world has much to get upset about and the leaders know this and I feel that there is something* we don't know and they do, but if we can be outraged about something it's less likely we'll find out, so out comes the banhammer of conduct, websites are to issue declarations of intent to abuse, many of them change their design to one seen by specialists as inoffensive, this one and the Nexus are prime examples, there are witch hunts for unmentionables to keep us outraged at someone, new laws being introduced to ensure we moderate our tongues, and ensuring technology keeps an eye on us everybody has a camera filming any incidents of misconduct they see and upload them to 'spacetube' and 'yourface' where the perp's can be identified and dealt with, so you gotta expect 'rebels' though it's difficult to tell the difference between a rebel and a thirteen year old sometimes.

*I dunno what, big and would cause worldwide panic and or harm
