Ship naming... what's yours?

Hi Commanders

With Sagittarius Eye's excellent article this month on the conundrum of ship naming, I thought I'd ask other commanders the names and rationale behind their ship names.

Here's mine:

All based on Pink Floyd track titles:

1. Learning to Fly - Sidewinder
2. Pigs on the Wing - Viper (ex-police)
3. Astronomy Domine - Cobra Mk3
4. Dark side of the Moon - Vulture
5. Interstellar Overdrive - Asp Explorer
6. Welcome to the Machine - Fer-de-lance
7. Comfortably Numb - Python (drug runner and smuggler)
8. Eclipse - Anaconda (well it is big)
9. One of the Few - Krait Mk2
10. The Final Cut - Mamba
11. Lucifer Sam - Krait Phantom

What's yours?

Python : Lotus Blossom (thrives in different mediums)
Type 9 : Anemone (small delicate flower)
AspX : Daisy
Federal Corvette : Aconitum (Wolfbane)

Well i didnt intend it that way but now that you mention it ...

Lol... is that FluffyBunny 1 to 14?

I forgot I named one of my Anacondas, ILOVEDONUTS, because I was into custard-filled chocolate covered donuts at the christening of that ship.

I am not into donuts anymore.

Every other ship I have will be named for Fluffy Bunny, the most adorable, fierce, and forever brightest star in the universe.

:)

One day I was retrofitting my brand new Phantom and listening to music that was randomly played from my music server. At some point I heard two great pieces: "Fail" by Orphaned Land followed by Star One's "Starchild". So my Phantom is "Orphaned Starchild" now. :D

Dolphin=Tom Cruise: Also a brand of hubcaps. Golden, pretentious paintjob. You've never been on a cruise 'till you've been on a Tom cruise.
Orca=Ace Ventura: The name fits exploration in style. Just like Optimus Prime should be a credit card company.
Beluga=Ace Ventura II: We don't change the in-flight movie but we do change the drugs we pump into the air every two hours.

Zorgon Peterson
Hauler=Tout Suite: Maintenant.
Adder=Uncle Phil: I miss Uncle Phil.
Mamba=Mongoose: Because they're fast and they kill snakes.
FDL=Money Shot: Because sometimes I shoot things to get money.

Core Dynamics
Eagle=Mach Breaker: Thought it was a cool name for a racer. The power distributor sucks though, even when fully engineered.
Vulture=Photon: I built this to survive the heat meta. Updated the armour but kept the name.
Dropship=Gentle Ben: Bad news for the...Impson Family!
Assault Ship=Fast Eddy: It was a pool night.
Gunship=Carnivore: Steak and guns go together like apple pie and guns, or baseball and guns.
Corvette=Simple Jack: It's not complicated.

Gutamaya
Courier=Impetuous: All purpose all-rounder that excels at racing and killing things with triple-plasma death.
ImpEagle=Jefferson Airplane: The first in the Jeffersonian line.
Clipper=Jefferson Starship: The next evolution.
Cutter=Jefferson Dreadnought: The "pinnacle" of starship "design".

Faulcon DeLacy
Sidewinder=Reverse Cowgirl: Not an appropriate ship for most missions.
Viper III=Gooch Breaker: Much faster racer than the Mach Breaker with ample distributor power.
Viper IV=Upper Hand: My favorite ship. Not my best ship but I've learned how to use it well.
Krait Phantom=Ghost Rider: l..l
Python=Old Crow: My ship kit makes it look like a crow.
Anaconda=Dynasty Sunrider: Because I bought it to win the game.

Lakon
DBX=Wonderstruck: We used to have a science show I watched as a kid.
DBS=Backstabber: Silent Running torpedo bastage.
T6=Deep 6: My mining vessel. I don't like mining so it's the perfect size.
AspS=Artful Dodger: I dodge things with it. Not sure what else to do with it.
AspX=Allan Parsons Project: We're still working on it.
Keelback=Happy Hour: I use it for killing, for about an hour.
T7=Lucky 7: My big red truck. The secret is to yaw.
T9=Bankrupt Rage: My last 90 bucks.
T10=Mother Superior: It looks like a nun. Don't see it? You're crazy!

I have an Adder (only recently started the game). It's called the SP-Verona. SP stands for Scarlet Print, my in-game, role-playing, news/radio outlet. I want to name my fleet SP- and then a significant city or place name. For this one I chose Verona, because it has some romance, like a writer.

For ships IDs I use the following

[ship builder acronym] - [day of the month][letter code for the ship's mission]

Example:

DE-18F

Delacy- 18 Fighter

Or

LS-18E (Lakon Spaceways - 18 Explorer)

dbx: Hover-fly (like a wasp but without the sting)
keelback: Transit Van (ecause thats how it handles)
python: Raspberry (as in raspberry pi-thon)
krait: Banana Box (its a krait...)
krait's figter - Banana

when I get my 'conda, I might call it Lisa...

CMDR Yelboc

My ship names:

- Sidewinder Legacy. Because it's my Freebiewinder. Rarely used, occasional shuttling.
- Cobra III Australis. You can probably guess from the name which panitjob it's got. Until recently, it was my only ship wih an SRV installed. Still my go-to ship for in-bubble planetary surveying and raw mats gathering.
- Asp Explorer Erebus. Exploration; white paintjob. In every space game I've ever played which has allowed ship naming, I've always had an "Erebus". It's the Latinized form of the Greek word "Abyss", the dark void of nothingness. Also the name of a volcano in Antarctica, and of the ship from the ill-fated Franklin expedition to find the Northwest Passage. FD apparently think it's a cool name for a spaceship too, because it's one of the possible names for Farragut battlecruisers.
- Asp Explorer Heart of Osmium. Mining, with a bright orange paintjob. Homage to the starship "Heart of Gold" from HHGTG.
- Imperial Courier White Knight. Small combat; default white paintjob.
- Imperial Courier Blue Angel. Blue paintjob, obviously. A legacy from the time before Engineered FSDs and/or ship transfers, when I needed two combat Couriers at opposite ends of the Bubble. Paid over a million credits to get this one shipped out to Colonia for combat during my last Grand Tour, and the poor thing's still out there.
- Orca Queen of Arexack. Passengers; vibrant red panitjob. Arexack is my character's homeworld.
- Imperial Clipper Alchemist. Intended as snatch-and-grab salvage-specialist ship; tactical blue paintjob. The alchemists of old specialized in turning unwanted scrap into treasure. My efforts to do likewise with this ship have been just as unsuccessful.
- Krait II Snarkhunter. Medium combat with fighter, with the blue-and-yellow paintjob. With a name that's an obvious homage to the famous Lewis Carroll poem, it's intended to find and catch hard-to-find things. I also seem to recall a ship in a Larry Niven novel named this.
- Python Pytheas, vibrant green paintjob. Cargo and mission running. Pytheas was a quasi-mythical ancient Greek explorer, who reportedly ventured to the furthest ends of the Earth.
- Type 10 Investigator. Heavy combat, chrome paintjob. Once I get motivated to buy and Engineer a better Heavy Combat ship, this one will return to the intent for which it was named: signal source investigation, with the intent of being able to survive anything a USS can generate. Also named after the ship which first circumnavigated Australia.

These are the only ships I've ever owned, besides a fleet of bookmarkwinders and an un-named Adder which I'd briefly acquired in the early game progression between the Sidey and the Cobra III.
