Simple Fix to Combat Logging

You are a brave person...

I still have faith that at the end of all the data collection by FD they will implement an automated warning system with consequences... It may be a while but I think it's coming.
I mean I speak as an uneducated fool here but can't they rig it to get a confirmation command sent when someone presses "log-out to main menu" or "log-out to desktop". And the same when someone presses login?

That way they'd have X user - login... X user logout. Subtract the logouts from logins and it should = 0. Any that are higher than 0 have used out of game methods. Then put numbers on it or clever statistics (numbers per month/year) to determine at what point players get warnings/actions since a certain number may be accidents or power-cuts etc.

Driving around in my SRV causes periodic blue screens for me (and ED is the only game I experience this in). Should I start receiving punishments for this?

Easy solution is to take 30sec instead of 15 to log out, and if you killtask make it so your ship stays in game for 30sec still anyway. Most MMO's have this feature. Game crashes or you lose connection in EQ? When you try to log back in it tells you that you have a character logged in still, would you like to log them out?

So agressive.

I'm not entirely sure if you're saying my comment is dumb? It isn't it's just as viable you are abusing the game mechanics to avoid dying, it is exactly the same.

Is using an exploit not cheating then? I care because it's an issue that is brought up on a very regular basis. There's no justification for it because (as I said above) you are abusing the game mechanics to avoid dying, regardless of which mode you're playing in. However for some reason people seem to think that it only matters against PCs and it's perfectly fine to do it against NPCs.

I meant that there is actually no relevant argument against combat logging outside of the multiplayer experience. People that bring up combat logging as it pertains to solo aren't presenting a relevant argument.

As has been brought up multiple times, there's no justification to care about it. It only matters in multiplayer affairs, and that's because you're influencing another player's experience.

OK if you could just try saying something that actually makes sense that would be great.

Let me spell it out for you. Combat logging is a non issue and it does not affect you. It's funny that you would argue about it.

Not according to the Oxford dictionary buddy.

Definition of cheat in English:
verb
1. [no object] Act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage: she always cheats at cards

I'm not going to argue but combat logging, no matter how minor an offense you believe it to be, is cheating, it's acting dishonestly in order to gain an advantage. I.E avoid the destruction of your ship when engaged in combat, be that against NPC's or human pilots. Personally I dislike cheaters as much as bullies.

An no, I do not actively engage in PVP before you ask.

I think you have that the wrong way around, surely it is the combat logger that doesn't want to play with the person they combat log on, surely people not wanting to be fired upon should create a private group and play in it... oh they did... but some refuse to use that and insist on combat logging.

Since we are talking about a multiplayer computer game the oxford definition doesn't apply here. You could also give me the definition of a keyboard (music instrument) but it doesn't apply when I am talking about computers (the thing with letters on it).

Leaving the game because I don't want to spend time with you is not an unfair advantage, it's just leaving the game because I don't want to spend time with you. For me this is like kids playing soccer and one needs to leave because his mommy made soup.

Btw I don't combat log and I am not interested in PvP.

I don't know, I think that combat logging against the AI is just as bad (combat loggers dont bother me much in general anyway).

It's still avoiding the built in penalties of the game whether you are avoiding a CMDR or an NPC. I think most CMDRs just don't care about people doing it in solo.

Who cares though?

This is a solution looking for a problem. FDev has already clearly stated that logging out to Menu during combat is Okay. If you survive those 15 seconds then you get away and have done nothing wrong. So, nothing needs to change there.

OK so that's fine if you don't mind cheating in games I suppose.

Yeah, but it would fix the problem the OP is complaining about. Just answering him/her.

People like to use this pretense when they're arguing about combat logging in solo, and frankly it's just as dumb.

People pulling the plug in the middle of combat in order to completely avoid dying at all doesn't effect the game?

Not losing money. Not losing progress.

How does that not effect every single player in the game?

Why even have money in the game. Why not just give us everything for free sInce there is effectively no penalty for anything at all apart from honesty.

Just because you don't care about risk and reward or PVP doesn't mean that it does not matter.

Yes, its is relative to the discussion, we are both communicating an english speaking fourm. So the Oxford dictionary and the words within used to describe actions does very much apply.

If you are silly enough not to see how someone combat logging when about to be destroyed is cheating then you either naive or being obtuse. Ship destruction receives a penalty, in the form of an insurance cost, by combat logging you are avoiding this penalty, giving you an unfair advantage, in game money you should not have.

Leaving the game is fine, combat logging to avoid ships destruction is cheating.

My answer is that what I do with my game does not affect you at all, so why are you making a stink about it?

I could care less if you combat log all day. I don't even care when players combat log before I can destroy their ships. It's admitting defeat and also admitting they are too much of a baby to pay insurance. Fine with me.

Hahaha it has everything to do with it. You do realise we all share the same BGS don't you?

cheating in solo is pretty irrelevant, tbh I feel like i'm cheating just by trashing all these Elite Anacondas all day, but cheating vs other players is a harsh detriment to the general experience, to get a similar comparison for solo the NPC's would have to randomly one shot you to really get that cheesed feeling ;)

Its also a cop-out to say all PvP is massive ship vs sidewinder, when I was playing pirate only in vanilla I had a tally for the people that combat logged the most and it was anacondas by an absolute mile, even though they were immune to piracy with any effort whatsoever -_-

Conversely T9's and T6's had a perfect score and I had over 100 T6's.

Is using an exploit not cheating then?

Exactly. At least as long as we are talking about online gaming. A cheat is a godmode/wallhack/aimbot basically everything that isn't possible for a normal player while an exploit is the usage of mechanics that are available to everyone but not allowed. There is a difference for both in every league and punishment is handled differently. You'll get banned for using a cheat and you get penalty points for exploits.

Then why are these players in open if they don't want to play? The option is there when you log on.

SOLO
PVT GROUP
OPEN

Guess which one I am going to pick if I don't want to play with others?

Why do you play in open if you know that you might encounter combat loggers?

It's obvious that FDEV hasn't taken action yet. Why do you think the 10000th on this topic would help? The only solution you could have right now would be a private group without combat loggers.
