Small ship flight model buff!

Just made me laugh thinking maybe trade cutters will finally fear those Npc Pirate Adders that make such bold claims all the time. About time if you ask me :)

haha. The Cutter struggles are gonna get even more real without some other things changing. Well at least we can run like Usain Bolt. :-/

one of the more exciting consequences is an indirect nerf to the rail meta. In fact, I fully expect this to mean a very real return to the gimballed meta for medium ships which have for the last few months been living fat with fixed everything as a one-size-fits-all offensive setup. If these small ships perform like we think they can, PvP CMDRs will have to pick fights carefully if running an all-fixed build and it's very easy to imagine a CMDR going through their entire arsenal of rail munitions trying to hit these fruit fly ships to no avail. Hard to hit what you can't see with fixed weaponry. all fixed will still be great for medium vs medium or medium vs large, but going fighting ships a class or two smaller than your (gimbals and turrets will be necessary again) will be markedly different very soon. This is also going to make ships like the Cutter nearly 100% dependent upon Turrets in an ever-increasing number of scenarios. The ship really has no chance at keeping most small or mid sized ships piloted by reasonably experienced PvP pilots in front of it with these changes making even gimballed weapons only realistic against the slowest of ships (other big ships + Pythons + Gunships). That's cool if FDev's plan is to also revisit the precision/strength of turreted weapons or plan to revisit the pitch speeds of the ship. Otherwise, the Cutter becomes a lame duck beyond trading. A battle ship almost fully dependent on turreted weapons in a balance state where turrets are often inaccurate and underpowered...leaves me wanting.
We'll have to see the extent of the changes to make any realistic judgments. Will it be a flat increase to speed or just to boost? Will it have higher capacitor draw or heat generation or power draw? Will it affect the handling of the ships or just the speed? We'll also have to see what engineers can do to turrets, shields, hull mass, thrusters and chaff to decide what happens with the cutter, but it never has been and I doubt ever will be a lame duck. It's basically an unkillable fortress that if even the most experienced PvP pilot in a small ship tries to take on will find himself exhausting his chaff and running for the hills because of the constant barrage of turret fire while the cutter pilot calmly sips tea on the bridge. That said, I certainly hope it increases variety for players. I'm quite pleased with the 1.5/2.0 changes to heat sinks, SCBs and HRPs as my builds have become much more diverse and interesting to play with, however I'm a main game PvE pilot and save the "PvP" for Arena (cough...where it belongs....cough), so min maxing to counteract a wing based meta doesn't come in to my ship builds. This also says nothing of the missile buff (major damage to external modules) and small ships with limited utility mounts will find themselves with a hard decision between ECM, PD, heat sinks and chaff to deal with missiles and turrets on big ships. A few missiles could, depending on the extent of the buff, take out half the hard points and utility mounts on a small ship. Lots to consider and it is certainly all very exciting!

Life was hell in a Cobra IV before with the gnats pestering me... Anyone able to tell me what's worse than hell? ;)

Doubtful to ever happen that a trudder pilot would be afraid of any npc whatsoever...

For those wondering, these are the ships that use class 2 or 3 drives:

Adder
Eagle
Hauler
Imperial Courier
Imperial Eagle
Sidewinder
Viper Mk III

Personally I'm super hyped for this. Noobs will have an easier time evading griefers and iconic ships like the Viper and Eagle may be more viable and fly as good as they sound!

Season two has been good for the Sidewinder, first an additional class 1 Internals, and now the possibility of enhanced Class 2 DeLacey Spin Ionics? Wonderful

I would absolutely love to go back to using a V mk III most of the time. Small, cheap to fly... the only problem was that other ships so completely equaled (or outclassed) it in speed and/or maneuvering that it became pointless to fly one once you could afford a Vulture.

(Yes, I know the Vulture costs a lot more. But I'd like ship strengths to not just be completely based on one's budget.)

This is great. I have a Sidewinder for exploration, and I will get a Viper Mk III at some point.

It is indeed fantastic news. I do wonder, though, whether these drives might only be compatible with Faulcon de Lacy vessels?

I too love the Courier, but we might need to visit an engineer to get that pimped.

Just speculating, of course. :)

Great post, BTW, @Heavenly-Hammer.

hahaha, and now you gave me ideas of a garage in the style of NFS Most Wanted, where I park my Courier for a NOZ cannister, some body kits and a new tribal decal on the nose... cannot unsee.

Oh man, sounds good. My #1 plan for 2.1 is to get the fastest ship possible, I assumed that would be the Cobra, maybe not now? It would be cool to make an ultra fast Hauler for smuggling.

My feelings precisely. About all the small ships though, not just the Viper.

The Viper Mk. III has higher DPS than the Vulture, so a speed (and manoeuvrability boost in particular) would make it a pretty good contender as a light fighter. I'm cautiously optimistic.
