So, is this game just too stupid?

You'd lose the bet :)

My problem wasn't with the fine or lost ship, as much as the game design that would allow that. It was just a sidewinder, so i got a free one anyway, but it was in a system pretty far away and I had to do the return flight. But if it can happen with a sidewinder, then it can happen with a more expensive ship as well I would assume. Why have an auto-system if it can't be used?

Every game has annoying bugs, but none that are that ridiculous stay in a game long. Also, even if it weren't a bug, it makes no sense. The station scanned me, and auto-docked me, and then I was approved for auto-launch. In what scenario is killing someone appropriate there?? A fine for messing with traffic maybe, but to kill them...that's really just stupid. If I was not approved to land and entered the station, I'd expect to be shot down, but this is totally opposite of that. They had control of my ship, and then killed me... LOL
Just like real world governments, the department responsible for controlling traffic and the department for managing the flight corridor don't talk to each other so the latter will destroy a ship controlled by the former, unaware of how stupid they are being.

Of course with only a 5 minute window to exit and a 10 minute window to enter a station it's also possible for an incoming commander with a large and slow ship to hold up the outbound queue long enough for the authorities to act.

I find is a bit odd that people act like I'm not "good enough" for the game, just because I don't feel like investing my limited game time into something with very annoying "bugs". Just because you got used to the bugs, does not mean others feel the need to do the same.

And as a side note, if there is a mission that has you rescue people from a burning station and can't request docking permission, and the developers couldn't be bothered to turn off the fine during the mission, I'd consider that maybe the devs don't really care that much, as that should be a very easy fix.

Now, if the fine was intentional and actually a part of the mission, it would be fine. Not all mission parameters have to be all amazing.
You should stick around, you're going to fit right in 👍

I'm leaving a station for only the 5th time as I just started playing. I use Autolaunch, just like every other time. It puts me in a queue, even though there is no one else around. Queue time runs out, and the station fines me, then kills me. Now it puts me very far away from where I was.

If this is the stupidity I can expect, please let me know so I don't waste anymore time...

ty in advance.
Yeah, there are lots of inconsistencies like that in the game, and between tutorials/in game tips and the game itself.

Just fly out of the station yourself, those flaky training wheels are not something you need, or should heavily rely upon. :)

The most likely explanation is still that he just touched his controls which overrides autolaunch. 🤷‍♂️

He is new to the game and doesn't understand how it works, so I guess it's more sensible to assume pilot error instead of a bug (especially with a game that isn't exactly friendly to newcomers).

Even if auto launch failed, he still had plenty of time to get out of the station himself, so again, pilot error.

And even if he was AFK and had no chance to exit the station manually (which would be another pilot error) he could still simply ask support to reimburse him for his losses, which makes more sense than creating a whiny thread about a problems that might happen in 1 of 100000 times.

In the meantime he already announced that he is gone 2-3 times without actually being gone, so I assume he is probably just trolling. Apparently he doesn't like to take advice either, so why bother?

I understand the OP when they say that a feature should work as intended, however Elite is a very buggy game and one either plays around the bugs, or doesn't and walks away for the sake of their own sanity. Most long term players here are well conditioned to this now so will just shrug it off. YMMV.

On ships that have the docking computer installed, I usually disable the autolaunch option (you can control this, autodocking, and autolanding in the right hand menu) because it takes too long even if it works (and it mostly works to be fair), unless I'm feeling particularly lazy and want to do stuff while it does its thing, such as selecting a new destination etc.

Manually launching and docking is one key activity in the game that I've done thousands of times now and still haven't gotten tired of it, especially when in a small and agile ship. Boosting through the mailslot never gets old.

Honestly, if you're on a timer that's telling you to get gone from somewhere and you just watch it count down hoping the something will sort something out for you, this isn't the game for you.

It's always been a game where you learn by failure on a regular basis* (at least at the start) so it's a question of whether that's something you want to deal with. If not, well it's never going to be a game for everyone (and no judgement meant by that- there's plenty of more popular games out there that just aren't for me).

*Says the person who tried to clear a blocked ship from the slot with rail guns, forgetting that even anarchy stations have zero tolerance for when you fire inside them leading to a 35 million Cutter rebuy.

There are bugs with auto launch, and with auto land.

Generally, they work.

Sucks you lost your ship to a bug - you can contact support and they may well refund you.

Personally I would chalk it up to experience and do a few tests of manual launching/landing.

You're right though, auto launch should "just work"

Yes. Waiting in a queue is a bit silly.

You should have just flown out manually.

Every day's a school day I guess.

Oh, your game crashes? You should have just... you know, not launched it in the first place.

There is no excuse for broken game features as this. Git gud arguments are not constructive, neither is the #stuphztobehad attitude.

In fairness there is a count down timer, that was a clue to something happening at zero.
If it was a bug it's remarkably rare,it could have put you into a queue that took too long.
The game could inform you of every pitfall you will encounter during your early days but the list would be so long it would just confuse a new player even more.

Certainly quicker than waiting for the dev to implement a fix/better solution :p
It doesn't need to be fixed.

It works 99% of the time, which is good enough for a game like Elite.

In the very rare occasions it doesn't work it's a great opportunity for role playing, the Millennium Falcon had problems as well after all... If people just decide to sit there until they are blown up nothing will help them.

OP probably didn't encounter a bug anyway but simply stopped the auto launch process accidentally.
.

I just expect in game mechanics to work. If a simple auto-launch system screws up within my first 5 launches, what other stupidity can I expect from the game? This is not a newly released game, bugs like that shouldn't still be around. And if it's not a bug, but by design, then I'm guessing this is not the game for me. Programmed stupidity is worse than bugs, imho.

TY all for your responses. Time to go
It's certainly a good indicator of what's ahead with the rest of the game, including the response you're getting from others on this forum (eg it's your fault for using auto launch and not flying out yourself, etc). Everything is like this. There's fun to be had, but there's lots of "broken stair" moments throughout.
