So, is this game just too stupid?

Rage Quit.jpg

15k hours in the game so far... 6 accounts, 4 of them have fleet carriers....played since 2014....

I always use the Advanced Docking Computer on all my ships. 98% of the time they do it right... that said.. There are those 2% of times they don't, and you have to take controll over the ship to avoid disaster.

I would argue that when they do work, they teach you how to fly the ship regarding docking. When they don't they will kill you.

So.. as long as you have the rebuy cost, I urge you to use the Advanced Docking Computer.... in most cases they work, and if you pay attention to how they allign the ship in the mailslot, even better. That is the right step in learning how to handle your ship when not using a DC.

Thats my few cents of advice.

It's certainly a good indicator of what's ahead with the rest of the game, including the response you're getting from others on this forum (eg it's your fault for using auto launch and not flying out yourself, etc). Everything is like this. There's fun to be had, but there's lots of "broken stair" moments throughout.
Well some of us are just more rational. First, OP probably made the mistake himself, second it's not even a real bug. Imagine playing a racing game and the AI sometimes rams you (like 1 out of 100 races), I certainly wouldn't start an entitled forum thread about it. It's perfectly normal and nothing to get upset about.

OP is having a blast with the auto computers. 😉

Joke aside, they are only worth using if you can already fly your ship, so that you can babysit the auto computer and take over whenever it begins to destroy your ship. I never said, "don't ever use them". Only that OP should learn to land and unlock so he can avoid auto computers destroying his ships.

OP can't be blamed for being frustrated by the game failing to execute a very simple task that it claims to be able to do, and then making him pay for it.
The game doesn't claim that, the manufacturer of your docking computer does.

Love it for my big T10 don't waste a slot on smaller ships, fly in. landing in stations is the most technical flying you pretty much do in this game. and is fun in smaller ships.
That Said yes it malfunctions some time my T10 will smack the walls or bump into other ships. but don't get fined for it for my ship is connected to the station AI.
Now if it taking to long then throttle up and get the F out of there, Dauh.

I use it on my shieldless ship out at Robigo. But I fly to the pad manually, then hit 0% throttle and let auto-dock set 'er down nice and easy.

I just expect in game mechanics to work. If a simple auto-launch system screws up within my first 5 launches, what other stupidity can I expect from the game? This is not a newly released game, bugs like that shouldn't still be around. And if it's not a bug, but by design, then I'm guessing this is not the game for me. Programmed stupidity is worse than bugs, imho.

TY all for your responses. Time to go
It's not a bug. It's a British game, they love to que. They love it so much they put an extra ue to it so it lasts longer.

I do feel that new starters shouldn't get the Auto Launch / Auto Dock on their Sidey after the tutorial, so they can actually learn how to fly the ship... But on the same vein, I think there should be a second tutorial, after the first tutorial, teaching them the basics on manual flying, before booting them out of spacedock.

It's quite difficult to sympathize with the OP when you yourself started the game before there even was an auto-launch, and buying the auto-dock was too expensive for newbies.

In my opinion, OP is a crybaby who should find a nice farm related game to play :p
Point out a problem I experienced, came here to ask if I can expect more of this before I sink a ton of time into the game, and that makes me a crybaby?

You are right about 1 thing though, if the game didn't have an autodock/launch system, I would have never had to worry about it. But they did.

The most likely explanation is still that he just touched his controls which overrides autolaunch. 🤷‍♂️

He is new to the game and doesn't understand how it works, so I guess it's more sensible to assume pilot error instead of a bug (especially with a game that isn't exactly friendly to newcomers).

Even if auto launch failed, he still had plenty of time to get out of the station himself, so again, pilot error.

And even if he was AFK and had no chance to exit the station manually (which would be another pilot error) he could still simply ask support to reimburse him for his losses, which makes more sense than creating a whiny thread about a problems that might happen in 1 of 100000 times.

In the meantime he already announced that he is gone 2-3 times without actually being gone, so I assume he is probably just trolling. Apparently he doesn't like to take advice either, so why bother?
I didn't touch any controls, but I was afk. I was petting my cat if you must know, and he didn't care that my ship blew up either.

And as for the rest, when I make a post on a forum, I tend to like to follow it to see if some really useful information comes out of it. There are some here that have been helpful, and some that just blame or insult me. Every gaming community has those, so no real big deal.

The underlying premise is I'm just trying to see if I should invest my time in this game or not, by getting responses from people who are actually playing it. I'm not sure why that is a bad thing to some of you, but I really don't care either, that's the way I work.

That's some curious logic you're using there.

So like if the game started crashing to desktop every time someone gets in an SRV, and they complain about it; I would be a hypocrite to agree with them because when I first started playing, we couldn't land on planets and there were no SRVs?

Or y'know if limpet AI doesn't work right and they keep blowing themselves up and crashing into my ship rather than depositing cargo, I'm supposed to ignore this, and shout down anyone who complains, because the game didn't always have limpets in it, right?

Basically nothing introduced after 1.0 release needs to work properly, ever, and if newcomers are frustrated with the way a post-1.0 feature functions (or fails to function), then they are wrong and stupid and it's good that they are leaving the game in frustration because that's what they deserve. Am I getting that right? Please help me understand how to think correctly like you do.

I'm leaving a station for only the 5th time as I just started playing. I use Autolaunch, just like every other time. It puts me in a queue, even though there is no one else around. Queue time runs out, and the station fines me, then kills me. Now it puts me very far away from where I was.

If this is the stupidity I can expect, please let me know so I don't waste anymore time...

ty in advance.
My typical way to deal with that kind of situation especially when flying Cutter is to take over and brute force my way out. One may get some fines though...

If you're waiting in a queue, that's a good thing desired by many, actually, since it's the closest we get to traffic control! What should happen when we get clearance to land is direction to follow the last ship that's been given clearance to leave or exit a starport. The AI traffic control in MSFS is one of its best features, and a feature that no other flight sim really has replicated well. It'd be fantastic if FDev actually was able to flush that out a bit more, since it's sorta there (even without autodock, you can line up amongst the waiting ships)...definitely brilliant stuff if done right.

If you're using auto-dock, all you need to do is use the throttle to disengage it, if waiting is too long. You'll also have to rotate the ship a bit, etc, to get through the slot. If you cant use throttle up, or fly the ship when necessary, there's another option. Have you considered the taxi service? You don't really need to use your ship in Odyssey. To use a taxi, go into any starport or base and head to the counter called 'APEX'. I think you can book a taxi within 100 LY of where you're at. It's really great FDev included taxi's for those who cant fly.

Good luck CMDR!

Elite have imo really awesome ships flight model which needs some time to get used to it and it also very differs for various ship. For example while flying with heavy hauler T-9 you almost can really feel that huge mass right behind your back while you sit in glass cocpkipt on ship nose and look to all directions. Or while on foor (Odyssey) you can watch how huge Cutter or smaller (but still big) T7 lands right before your eyes. This is however just one small part of this game, rest depends about you and your ability to make your goals or find a group which have goals which you may like support. This game can be played for years and having fun ... or can become boring pretty fast if you do not find "what to do". Hard to say anything more or advise, it really depends about what type of player you are. There is allot going on behind the scenes, missions offered on stations are based on bacground simulation which is, or can be, longtime goal for many. There are also hostile species (Thargoids) which is not easy to fight and which needs specifically prepared ships. You can also upgrade your ships (or on foot equipment) and make them better ... but this again depeneds about your preferences ... some players want have it done overnight, some slowly upgrade things occassionally for years. There is not any end-goal, there is just path which fully depends about player and his decisions.

Starting (some) goals:
  • learn basic flying
  • find activity (or better mix of them) which you like the most and make some cash
  • learn that there are so called "enginneers" and try little upgrade your ship(s)
  • try some of community goals (for start is better do not try do it in Open :) )
  • try explore little, there are many nice places and areas
  • guardians areas can be visited early in game and have really great atmosphere
  • solo or group? ... may I be interest to join some squadron? .... this decision may really change all in case of ED
  • learn that there are tons of 3rd party utilities and sites which makes playing ED much smoother.
  • learn what is easier use in game (if you search for something) and where 3rd party utilities are better
  • ... and many other

Autolaunch is garbage and has been since advanced docking computers were added.

Couple things you can do to "help" it:

  • Don't AFK on the pad. It causes NPCs to congregate at the station and go stupid. If you're gonna go drop a deuce, log out to the main menu.
  • Ditch the docking computer. Seriously, though...as a noob you're in a small ship. You have to really work hard to get stuck in the slot in a Sidewinder.
  • Don't take the advice that's been given and keep eating rebuys. It's not like the few thousand you're paying to get your ship back is anything significant. When you blow up an A-rated Anaconda or bigger, then you have some justification to get a little upset...but just a little.
