So lets get this straight.. Our commander names are no longer unique?

Just to add more fuel to the fire... us Xbox players can change our CMDR name whenever we want through changing our gamertag. :V

Though, that does open up the possibility of a PC CMDR asking very very nicely for the Xbox CMDR to change their gamertag...

BUT good luck doing that with NPCs! I've seen a few NPC pirates with the same name as some PC or Xbox CMDRs. (Obviously without the CMDR in front).

Whaaaaa-?!

I had no idea this was a thing. How does that work with First Discovery tags?

Wow this is quite open to abuse I imagine - off the top of my head stuff like impersonating an entire player group's list of members and documenting misdeeds in order to character assassinate them.

Yikes.

TRUST NO ONE

Ehhhhh... "whenever we want" = "Whenever we feel like paying money to change our gamertag"

The first change is free, but any more and you have to pay for it. Microsoft doesn't take changing gamertags lightly. So character assassination is unlikely.

This is an utter fiasco. Our name is our identity in game. I really want to like this game and Frontier, but a day never seems to go by without some moronic nonsense going on. If this game was a horse it would have been shot long ago.

What madness is this?

You what?

So if I have this right, whilst we all share the same galaxy our commander names are now only unique to each platform (i.e. xbox, PC, PS4, linux, etc..).

Without being rude I'd like to point out that many of us paid to reserve our commander names for the game. Shouldn't our commanders be unique to the galaxy?

Small cog, insignificant and a dime a dozen. Just the way the player base wants it. :)

To be fair, there are quite a few people IRL with the same first and last name as me... all of them a lot more successful... damn.

Oh, you missed my post where I said we can only change our gamertags if we pay money to do so (after the first change), so any effects of that mechanic are heavily minimised. Very few people want to pay to change their gamertag.

You do realize that this has been the case every since the Xbox version went live about a year ago right? As far as I can tell, the world didn't cave in since then.

Secondly, I don't recall there being any "pay for your commander name" so I'm not quite sure what you mean by your claim that you paid for your unique commander name.

To answer the question on first discoveries, they are tagged as "Xbox" if they were done by an Xbox commander. (See below clarification this is actually only visible to FD).

If a player is reported, FD are capable to tell whether it was an Xbox or PC commander using telemetry.

Finally, since Xbox and PC players are in different instances and never meet each other in space, it's actually very unlikely that they would end up reporting each other. This confusion will more come into play if they ever introduce cross play with Xbox, but in that case I suspect they would put some kind of platform symbol on the HUD.

Edit: I do remember in the original kickstarter you could pledge for a commander ending in Jameson or something like that, but that was never available on Xbox so those would be unique.

I am eagerly awaiting the next ED community "scandal" tomorrow night.

Edit: Since last night I asked FD to clarify this and actually from our player perspective, you cannot see any difference in first discovered tags, so if a commander had an identical name you wouldn't see any difference. However, as a few others have pointed out, Gamertags are across the whole Xbox community for all games, so the chances of a player playing ED on Xbox with the exact same name as a PC player are quite low.

Looks like we're done here.

Definetly done now.

Just think, there could be an Xbox Cosmos player that combat logs and rams ships and people are making videos of his 'crime' and posting it to reddit so our poor Cosmos here inadvertently gets on a KOS list and is the object of hate....I can't handle it. :)

Interesting. I'll check this tonight. I don't recall any of my discoveries saying "Xbox" in front of them.

I still have a VERY hard time believing that Frontier has zero control over commander names when playing on Xbox. There are other games where there is no problem naming your character. For what reason would Microsoft not let Frontier control how commanders are named within their own game?

Now that's a pity as it will be an immersion killer (loathe as I am to use that term) and should ED ever make it to PS4, then I expect it will be identify PS4 first discoveries as such. It would have been better if were tagged DCP ;)

Backers above a certain level could submit an NPC name for the database. Apparently a lot of people obvious chose their own CMDR name for that, too.
