So there's absolutely 0 reasons for Odyssey to run poorly anymore.

I am thinking them dropping consoles now, means they will put less effort into optimization.
They'll be optimising F1 Manager I'm sure. Don't expect ED to have a long and lasting future.

I'm sure Odyssey will continue to be the bug-ridden, under-optimised pile of rubbish it is until they decide it's not financial viable to run the ED servers anymore and redeploy them to breeding dinosaurs or managing F1's.

No, i'm afraid you dont really get it.
Horizons = old engine, old code base, no longer supported or expected to receive any developments - as per yesterday's announcement
Odyssey = new engine, new code base, all development will be focused on this, solely for PC (no console ports planned anymore) - also as per yesterday's announcement
Wow. Ok so its becoming very clear you haven't actually paid attention the last year. Go back and bother to read the notes regarding updates since the original odyssey release, then try again. I have no desire to educate you.

SMH. I hate to see this regurgitated over and over in these forums.

Unlike Horizons PC/Console, Odyssey is its own base line. It did not share assets with Horizons. On PC, they weren't even compatible. When Odyssey released, all work went into that version of the game. Horizons received minimal maintenance updates. Now that consoles are gone, there's still Horizon PC. Because the two are not compatible, they will simply just stop supporting Horizons PC. Odyssey, in the state of affairs that people have been used to now, will become the single baseline going forward. Doing this forces more money in ED's pocket by making players holding out on Horizons, pay for the upgrade or simply go away like console.

I'll say it again, there was very minimal work in maintaining the Horizon's PC/Console baseline. When these go away, it doesn't mean that "extra" personnel will be available out of thin air to somehow spring Odyssey to glory. Most likely if the performance updates have slowed and/or stopped, Odyssey performance now is what you're going to get. For nearly a year now, Odyssey has been the lead development platform.
You are correct in it's current state. This is why only FC's are visible across both Horizons and Odyssey. With consoles out of the way that can now be corrected. Kind of my whole point. To move forward for Odyssey to function in its full capacity, and since while Horizon's itself isn't going anywhere until the merge the content, (which if in that you look at what they did with horizons, Odyssey will likely (again, if they follow their example of Horizons) become a free upgrade) That is the simplest way to solve the bridge problem (the link between the two incompatible pieces, which allows BGS and FC interaction, but not player). The focal then becomes the "X" of diminishing returns relative to loss of player base vs sales of Odyssey. The other option, so as to maintain sales of Odyssey, would be to upgrade the engine within horizons, which can be done, and leave several pieces disabled along with not upgrading the actual visuals would allow the merger, bringing them under one tree. At which point Horizons would then be under maintenance only. This would still allow consoles to continue with horizons but they still would not be privy to Odyssey's visuals or content. Keep in mind in doing this in such a way, this would work on consoles but would basically handicap the new engine as per horizons to effectively work. This Dumbing down however would not allow odyssey to run on consoles, and would not give the visuals within Horizons for PC's. Hence the cancelation of consoles. Consoles as we know them now, have numbered days anyway. There's a future down the road (8-10 yrs I think) where the only "console" box you would buy, would be much like what a dongle is today for a tv that is not a smart tv. Gaming of this fasion is moving to the cloud. Apps on TV's are growing more capable of streaming games from the cloud. This is why many newer TV's can now BT a controller. In the future your "console" will be an app on your tv that does cloud gaming with a subscription (not unlike Microsoft's game pass).

The difference is that Crysis looked STUNNING, whereas Odyssey graphics are average at best.
You're missing where most of the horsepower of your machine is being spent here. Go to some settlement you've never been and wander around. It's unique, isn't it? In fact, they all are. Even those mountains in the horizon and the colour of the sky are unique.

I don't need to doubt Braben's statements in the slightest to find them hollow and meaningless. For what it's worth, I think he's being honest, but it doesn't matter what he thinks or feels.
Especially in retrospect some statements are on step away from being lies. For example his statement of his old computer being able to run EDO or from the financial report, that EDO had some network related issues.

You just need to wait for Navi 31/RDNA 3. I hear it the RX 7900XT will to three times faster than the RX 6900XT.
Even if this was the case. A faster GPU is not helping a CPU limited game, which EDO is in problematic scenes. Especially AMD cards under DX11 perform pretty badly in such conditions due to lacking driver optimization.
Anyone remember the phrase "Yeah, but does it run Crysis?" And yet nobody yells incoherently about how Crysis was shoddy code written by developers who hated their player base.
Source? What is your expertise?

You’re assuming a lot here despite not having access to the source code.

how do you explain the terrible performance in areas where there are no settlements (I.e. uninhabited bodies)?

how do you explain the terrible performance between Horizons and Odyssey in equivalent scenarios (e.g. SRV on airless bodies)?

how do you explain the terrible performance in places with fixed layouts and assets (e.g. space station concourses)?

My take is as follows:

FDev advertised a console version for Odyssey. Around the time Update 1 or 2 released for the PC version, Braben announces console development is entirely on hold until the PC version is repaired enough to be console viable. This means no resources were being dedicated to the console version at all since then. Which in turn means the level of progress and effort we have seen for PC Odyssey is the best it is going to get, because it already was all available hands on deck. The cancellation of all console development is not freeing up more resources; it just means resources will never be reallocated back to consoles.

FDev was even nice enough to add multi-level graphics settings because they didn't want anyone to get left out.

Lastly, yeah optimising is one possibilty, but if you just wait 2 years then the average PC got more powerful on its own. Let them use the sliders and add more meat to the game.

Really, you’re going to go there? Crysis actually had exceptional graphics for its time that justified the system requirements it demanded. EDO, not so much, not by a long shot.

Im more curious about the new UI 😏
It was purposely designed for gamepad (console) style.
Can we roll it back ? During the change I sold 1 pacifier and 1 size4 PA, both fully engineered :ROFLMAO:

EDO ran great for me in Alpha, no hitching or lagging or crashing (i think it did crash two times, can't remember actually), and it still runs the same. I think you guy's have your PC's up

With no work done in Consoles for say a year and EDO is at this level on PC , yup it's all the bad consoles fault . Now the wicked witch of the consoles are dead the game will get better ? In my heart I hope you are right but going by the last 6 years ? Great ideas poorly implemented .

It's pretty sufficiently proven by now that the issue with odyssey's performance is not the customers' hardware, but with the game code. There have been more than sufficient player responses that even high end hardware experiences awful performance. Just because you personally have no experienced any issues does not mean NO ONE has.

RIP console commanders. My worry is that going forward (say in about a year) they will put out a half baked "finished" odyssey and that will be it. What was it FDEV said about a year ago? That they would support DLC (which odyssey basically is) for 2 years. I hate to doomcry but this does not give me confidence in any future for ED in any form. I'm so disgusted with FDEV behavior I'm about done. Hard to be motivated to play a game with developers that you cant trust to uphold their promises. (FC Interiors anyone?)

Nah - not going to happen.

Don’t get people’s hopes up.
