So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

Currently surveying EAFOTS GL-Y E2 6...

Nothing found so far. It is a very big planet though - bigger than Earth - and aside from some absolutely ridiculously sized craters, it is fairly uniform in features; nothing stands out particularly from orbit.

It is worth noting that it does have a lovely slight low level seasonal atmosphere on the day side. The A-class star looks like it's set in a muddy puddle rather than space.

Just arrived there. Seems to me that the habitable planet they stayed on was this base.

Eh, it's not what I would call a "habitable planet". Maybe the logs were simply intercepted at the Rift Beta Base, but originated from another system? If so, we need to be looking for a nearby system with a habitable world in it that might possibly have another beacon or a base somewhere in it.

In the Rift myself. This is more than just a needle in a haystack. Also I think its of note that many things are being found "out of order" like the ancient ruins/aliens thing. There are quite a few of us out here now so I think at this point its just going to be a grid search and luck to get to the next breadcrumb. I have no new info so I won't post vids or pics everyone has already seen. There is a definite line that the Eafots beacons draw out, though, and I'm working off of that (as are many others, I think). Anyway - good luck. Also I managed to inspect the ground from -1 feet and now my hull is at 63%. Ugh.

On the subject of what is implied by "habitable", I think it's almost certainly referring to an earth-like. Considering that the conflux base logs were pretty clearly referring to events happening off-site (like the hyperdiction), I would think we're looking at a similar scenario in the rift. This was a rally point, not a final resting point. Furthermore, there is no distress signal coming from the base as mentioned by the crew in the final log. For those who would rather not look for more bases, looking for nearby earth-likes to Beta Site would be a good idea. Fly around these systems for a bit too. Try to find a USS or other peculiarity.

This is where I am as well, the most interesting features I spotted from orbit were a triangle of craters, one small but deep impact crater and a fair sized stretch of deep red canyons.

I'm currently parked up in the second largest of the triangle craters for the night. I'm being forced into alcohol and socialisation, I'm against it, but I'm told it's a requirement for a well balanced lufe

Does anyone have an aerial shot of the base in the Conflux? I'd like to see if that base, like the Rift one, is placed near any striking features (like a deep ravine).

Yep. I'm in EAFOTS RA-G B11-0 searching planet 1. Unfortunately, there seems to be some confusion as to whether the rally point is 1 or 3 in this system, which makes it all the more difficult.

Update: The more I look at the Trello entry for this system, I'm convinced the rally point is 3, and the entry in Trello is a typo. The message translation says 3, and if you click on the link that says Rally Point 1, it actually shows you the image of the system map for planet 3. So I'm heading back to 3 now....ugh.

My thinking is that there is a base on each of the rally point planets, and it is very likely that each base will have its own sequence of messages. I reckon the message sequences will read Alpha, Gamma etc. We keep being told that there is a lot more to be discovered. The biggest problem is the needle in the haystack issue. A planet surface is a large area to scour. We know which haystacks to look at.
We need a magnet to help find the needles. :)

Aye this is the issue.

I'm at Hawkin's Gap, even the smallest candidate at 545km radius has a huge amount of space to cover.

At FR I think the biggest rally point body is utterly huge. It just doesn't seem realistic to find these by randomly looking. It does feel like these might be some clues or more info required. If they are indeed rally points surely there's some method or way to locate the location given the system.

So you think, well maybe it's the most obvious landmark from space but then you look at this :

And well it just seems to be at a crater like any other.

An alternative might be they behave like starports, in that the location always points at the body being rotated around, but in Hawkin's Gap only 3/4 are tidally locked.

Hmm, just feels like more clues required, or that something may be missing, otherwise it just seems blind luck? And blind luck for something that's supposed to be a rally point**?

**I am assuming here the locations are the rally points, that might be wrong, it's just the messages say "RALLY POINT <body name>" which seems to point to the body as the rally point.

I read some story about a team of explorers who get marooned on a planet after their mission goes bad and after years of being stuck, there's one guy left who's still trying to leave. Problem is, I can't find the link to said story anywhere; any of you guys know what I'm talking about? I read this like a yesterday/few days ago.

Now that the beacons are reactivated, has someone checked if the messages are still the same? Maybe FD sneaked in some more hints...

Well. Finally arrived at the Formidine Rift Beta Mission site for myself. If you remember, a few pages back, I lamented over the fact that I was still getting used to my new HOTAS and the keybindings? And how "boost" is right next to "reverse thrust"?
Yeah.
I'm back in the bubble. :)

Oh my, RIP CMDR Finn MacMillan. I'm sure his successor will submit equally worthy galnet news articles : )

I may or may not have had a similar experience on my first trip into the rift, many moons ago.

For single person yes, for hundred of pilots seems doable (I'm looking for geysers in my home system, planet has 2000 km radius, so far took me 26 hours with no luck, but one day I will find them)
We should fly by lines of longitude or something, team effort :) My ETA 90 minutes - happy to help.
