So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

Well, 6 more days to get the shooting thing out of my system, then back to the rift. I need chemical manipulators... Where the @)%* do you find those fracking things...

Z...

Filter the map for anarchy systems and search those with "War" or "Civil-War" state. If a "Searching Weapons" USS turns up, enter it and give those nasty weapons-dealers what they deserve. Chances are high that they have chem-manipulators fitted in their T9s. :D
Doing it this way you will get them quickly.

What are we missing?

We are missing 2.2 . Very hopefully :D.

Anything observable in the Rift from Sol would have occurred thousands of years in the past.

Take Cas A as an example. If the radio/x-ray source for Cas A is no longer observable from Sol then that means that something happened to it ten thousand years ago. Also: Didn't Drew say that Kahina's trip to Sol happened before the epilogue in Reclamation?

Here's my thoughts: Kahina meets the old woman in the hospital who then goes on ranting and raving about the Frontier, her Pilots Federation rank and something called the "Formidine Rift". Most people would just smile and nod in agreement at the old woman's ranting and then... never think about the incident again. Which is exactly what Kahina does for the rest of the novel until the epilogue.

Whatever Kahina found while in Sol had to have been enough to remind her of the old woman's ranting and then prompt her to seek out more information and to break into the Imperial database.

I remember a Galnet post recently about an alien artefact that is held (I think) at Mars High & of which "nothing is known", which sounds like a bit of propoganda to hide that something is known. I would expect as a high ranking & charismatic visiting aristocrat that Kahina might have been allowed to see it. Perhaps that triggered some train of thought that expanded into the vault break in to confirm/elucidate the old lady's words?
I think it is also possible that she was not acting altogether on her own initiative, but her visit may have been prompted by some person/group within the Imperial court who has an inside track into what the Feds/Imps know and are covering up-perhaps she has been sent to find out more.

The artifact on Mars predates Elite: Dangerous. I think it is mentioned in Frontier: First Encounters which makes it hard for me to believe that it has anything to do with the Rift mystery. I could be very wrong though.

Hhmmm... I guess Ill be leaving the FDL in the garage, then. Oh well, I do prefer the Vulture anyway. At least it can jump 17Ly...

I'm heading out to EAFOTS (again) and I'm staying there until I find something :D

Yeah, I did the same. After going as far as I could to the far rim, I found the burning desire to have my name tagged all over the systems I scanned..

One of the things that Galnet has been doing lately is to set up the background lore of the game, especially in relation to resolving potential ambiguities from/with the previous games. Thus we have had information about the Antares incident, the Thargoids and this alien artefact. The timing of some of these articles, however, may be significant.
.
The nature of this artefact found in the distant past (for 3302) on Mars is odd: for it to be clear that it is genuinely alien would have represented an incredibly significant moment in history, at the time of its discovery. At the very least, it would have had to have been investigated by multiple parties, independently, to be sure of the findings (e.g. isotopic and metallurgical analysis). To then not share any information other than its size, the planet it was found on and the fact of its non-human origin would have been considered bizarre and, very likely, unpopular in the past. Two reasons I can think of for keeping further details secret are that information might have been recovered from it suggesting a threat, or that it was itself transmitting information on its surroundings and needed to be kept in a shielded location to hide the fact of its recovery from its manufacturers. Either way, it means that the civilisation that made it exists in ED (whether implemented in part in the Rift or elsewhere, or awaiting implementation at a later date, e.g. in a permit-locked region) and may one day be encountered. Perhaps then more information may be forthcoming...

..perhaps bring a UA/UP near mars?

The information about the relic in previous games was one line in the Time-line included with FE2.

2270s - Second attempt to terra-form Mars started.
2280s - Discovery of first non-human relic in space. Origin still unknown in 3200.
2290s - First man "outside" on Mars (ie breathing unaided) on completion of terraforming.

The placement in the time-line may indicate that it gave away some secrets, regarding terra-forming?

I think sirius corporations satelitte program mentioned in galnet could be a key lore thing in 2.2 but time will tell - we are still searching for the missing

I agree with your thinking. To have Kahina specifically mentioned as having visited Mars shortly before her vault breakin & then apparent Rift search is suggestive

with an escalation of capital ships from the empire and federation, how will the alliance respond ( will we see an alliance capital ship program fire up as they seek to make sure they arent left behind in an arms race) research and development spending will rise and metal prices should rise as well

Technology transfer pact with Thargoids, obviously. ;)

Not sure if this has been approached before, but with the whole vain queen riddle, is it possible to line up cassiopeiae ontop of camelopardis (vain queen rides a camel) with perseus constellation closer than them both (remembers [looks back at] daughters hero)

As though youre looking from within a system towards casseopeiae, which would appear above camelopardis with perseus in between your system and the two other constellations. Ive tried working it out but i aint smart enough for it!
