This has really awakened a realization within me about the gulf between Trump supporters and everyone else, the massive problem the world now faces in the post-truth world, and the absolute catastrophe looming before us. Watching social media, particularly twitter, has been fascinating during the last few hours. I've hardly slept, so forgive any ramblings here. Maybe I'm just panicking about nothing. I hope so. But this really does look bad.
There are a few new ironic/sarcastic/mocking hashtags.
#pray4sweden is an example. Ikea is enjoying massive amounts of free publicity as people mockingly produce "we will rebuild" memes.
But I looked at some other places to get a feel for how this was playing out. There is a sizeable group of people out there who are absolutely convinced there has been some sort of riot or Islamic terrorist attack, and that attack is being covered up by the new world order liberal media or whatever. And it isn't just one or two random loons either. They're finding things, whether crimes committed by immigrants (or people who look like they might be immigrants) to events years old, and bringing them up as if that excuses Trump making stuff up.
Even as I type things "news" is being manufactured to fit with what Trump said last night, only instead of being done by some shadowy organization a-la 1984 it is being done by the Trump supporters at large. I have a horrible feeling that this is going to exhaust the media and Trumps opponents, and will become the "new normal" very quickly. If that happens there is a very real risk of Trump getting a second term or even having an even worse successor like Bannon or some other nutjob.
