Space Engineers - "Open" Changes Everything

I’ve tried both, and I’m not a fan of either. They both pretty much kill a starting engineer. Of course, it’s YOUR server, so if you want the Alien Planet to be a PvE challenge, go for it. Depending on settings, I’m almost tempted to do the “suit only” spawn.
The server would also have Perham, which I think you might prefer over alien due to its tough environment. As for suit only, I have bad news - I'm strongly considering disabling signal sources, because they just feel very gimmicky to me, kinda like Hunger Games drops. That doesn't mean you couldn't do suit only, but it would be harder. I really like the idea of "space is big and empty", something the default encounters doesn't really provide. It's one reason I'm considering making custom, persistent NPCs that follow shipping lanes.

I still have a LOT of playing around to do. My goal is to make it SE a more realistic experience, but not ridiculously challenging or boring. That sweet spot is going to be pretty narrow may require some work to achieve.

The interesting thing about disabling the drops with the Daily Needs mod is that if spiders are active on Alien, that world becomes the only source of animal protein in the system. If you want the most nutritious food, you’re going to need to go down there! :devilish:

Well, Old Duck, "Harry" was on during a brief opportunity to make a resource run last night. He kindly informed me that I'd better be willing to pay him 2k gold a week, or betray other players, or he'd destroy my base. Also, he informed the server as a whole that anyone giving up one of your major ships or bases gets lifetime immunity from him.

It looks like I’m going to be on his KOS list, since I chose relocation over paying him off or giving you up. Since he was still threatening my base, it's clear he hasn't revisited its location yet. I'm fine with that. I've got some ideas to better hide my bases, thanks to the new blocks, so it looks like I'll be playing hide-and-seek with him for a while.

I still need to choose a new home base, but that's a task that can wait until I can finish transferring my iron from my temporary base.

LOL, Harry is now on my KOS list ;) No more Mr. Nice Duck!

Despite being heavily distracted with modding Space Engineers (almost as addictive as modding Skyrim), I might have to get Jenny to help me build my new destroyer on CA2, just so I can go Harry Hunting. :devilish:

ps - if you see more signs of Harry in your sector of space, let me know. I might bring my current gunship in to run some patrols.

In for a penny, in for a pound. If I'm building my own "perfect" version of Space Engineers (perhaps someday to host on a server), might as well build my own solar system while I'm at it!

HUGE DISCLAIMER - I did not make these amazing planets. I'm just gathering the best, most realistic looking planets I can find and placing them in an empty solar system in order to build my own. Same goes for the Milky Way skybox and other mods. That said, it's still very time consuming. I blink, and the weekend is over!

I had to have a binary planet system,

And I have some moons nice and close to their parent planets for views like this:

A pseudo gas giant, but it looks really cool from space (and its moons):

Ooops, I crashed on Tatooine! I guess that's what happens with higher than normal gravity and speed caps raised..

solar07.jpg

All these thumbnails are clickable for full images. Some of these planets are really impressive, others are kinda boring from the ground (like the one I crashed on), but that's okay, because that's variety!

I played a bit on an official server last night, and I'm already spoiled by these new planets. Yeah, I confess, the default planets kinda look like playdo from space... Well, except a couple of them. For example, I include Keen's Pertam in my homemade solar system, which is the further planet in the first image in this post, along with a couple of moons. Pertam is actually pretty nice, visually speaking.

That moment at work when you suddenly realize that “Harry’s” act of “mercy” might still be a Trojan Horse… and there’s still seven hours minimum until you get home!

 😨

Experiments continue in laying out my own solar system, along with testing different planets for that perfect mix of look, feel, and playability:

It's tricky designing a solar system where the sun is fake.. At least there's an ecliptic of sorts, something I did not take into consideration when laying out these planets. I'll start fresh, move the sun around using admin tools to draw a virtual ecliptic, and then I'm considering making either a large gas giant or black hole the "center" of my solar system.

I'm also debating how big I want my solar system. If, for example, if I use a gas giant as the "center", then I can see limiting the "solar system" to a few moons (including some full planet-size moons) around the gas giant, with some of those moon planets having moons of their own. It would make building a "neighborhood" easier, with custom NPC trading lanes, etc. It would also feel more realistic, since a proper solar system would be HUGE.

So for now it's just test, test, test!

After much banging of my head against bad search results, I finally figured out how to make a BIG (relatively-speaking) gas giant, which allowed me to build my gas giant solar system. It's hard to believe this is Space Engineers!

BTW, those "moons" in orbit of the gas giant are full-size planets!

For those following this thread, I recently traded in my welder for a hammer and anvil.

I'm still logging in to the public servers about once per week to check on things, but my plans to start my own server are definitely on the back-burner. The good thing about SE is that I can stay in hibernation on the public servers for months, as long as I have air and log in occasionally to reset the despawn counter. Paying for a monthly server that I'm not using, however...

Welcome to ESO! Or are you a returning vet? If n00b is the case, there are some really great intro videos on what to get started with int the ESO side of the TES universe. Vloggers like Brah We Got This and Hack the Minotaur are the Splitsies of the ESO 'verse. :D First stop is to check out their channels on YT.

....and from the looks of it, you may need to add a few QoL enhancement mods asap. Particularly the inventory/PC interface UI based ones. Which remove the tedious grind of crafting and submitting daily/Master writs. Get these off esoui.com one of the best ESO .lua mod sites on the web

Have you guys checked out the new warfare update? I'm loving the new weapons. The new artillery turret looks really cool. Like something out of a terminator movie. The rail gun has an awesome sound and VFX. I shot a red ship through the side with it and in one shot it almost went though the entire ship. Ofc they are saying it can only punch through 3 layers of military armor so most of it was the squishy normal kind. Still very impressive though.

Space Engineers on sale 30% off.

SE on Steam

I got mine!
This triggered my "There's something on the forum that demands my attention" alarm. Congratulations!

I went back to playing after the new Warfare 2 update, documenting my new adventures over on Obsidian Ant's Discord:

I'm taking a little break right now, but if you end up on a server (CA2 is a good one) and would like some help, just give me a holler, and I'll hop on!
