Space Engineers - "Open" Changes Everything

Nice to see you again!

Is CA2 actually stable these days?

Inquiring minds want to know.
Well actually, the official servers are kinda a mess lately, because Keen has been under constant cyberattack since the update. It's one of the reasons I'm taking a break. If you want to do something purely productive (like build a small-grid Cobra), then I do recommend a single-player save at this time. You can always blueprint the finished ship to bring it over onto the server once (if) Keen patches the vulnerabilities.

I did start playing with the Exploration Enhancement Mod mod in single player, and it may be a nice substitute for online play. I'm also going to look at the encounters mod. EEM makes SE a little more like EGS with more interesting NPC factions, missions, stories, things to find, etc.

But for Krash, the server can be fine for learning the basics of the game if they want some help from other players. I just don't recommend investing tons of hours in building a dream ship on a Keen server unless you blueprint it after every build session, just in case.

I haven't started playing yet. But I'll watch some yt guides first and start off on solo until i'm comfortable with the basics.

Just checked, and performance on the official servers is still rubbish. I love the game, but I don't know why Keen even bothers offering servers that are MVP-1. Garbage, garbage, garbage!

I hope the rumors about NPCs are true, because I fear I may be stuck in a solo world, at least for the time being.

I'm keeping my engineer alive there, just in case, so I have to log in occasionally to check my O2 levels. The first thing I do is fire up the server status display.

Tis a shame, because right after the server wipe, the simspeed was a solid 100% day and night. The biggest problem back then was getting on, because the server was always full. These days, not so much.

Really good update and its great to think they are giving some thought to block shapes. Long time coming, but much appreciated for many players.
Many blocks and things in this update will re-ignite players imagination, if that imagination had dropped off a little.

Well the Elite Dangerous livestream may be canceled, but Space Engineers is not, and it looks like we just got some cool new blocks for free!

Urge to make another attempt at a Cobra Mark III rising… ;)

I was thinking the same about the Krait I was working on, because I was missing some of those angle blocks that might just be now available in this latest update!

Though I still dream of the day when we can make something out of solid cubes, and then take a 3 axis rotatable plane and cut those cubes into any angle we want (basically making our own blocks dynamically). If anyone ever invents such a system for block-based games like SE and EGS, anything will be possible!

I was under the impression that Starbase had such a system. Not a huge fan of PvP, especially in games like this, so it’s never been on my radar…

Only videos I've seen of it were very underwhelming. Starbase and Dual Universe were two of my biggest disappointments of the decade (based on videos, reviews, etc), and AFAIK they haven't changed much since then.

In 'SkyWanderers'.. sorry.. 'Starship Evo', it changed name. However in that, you can manipulate blocks, to what degree I haven't tried, but you can do it.
That said, it's so far from being finished, it's kinda not worth it at the moment.

I recommend doing it in "solo" mode. I dropped in on the CA2 server last night, first time in a long time, did some work, logged out, only to log in this morning to find all that work undone. This of course means the server crashed shortly after I logged out, causing yet another rollback undoing all my work. Consider the odds of that and you can see that Keen's servers remain unstable, untenable garbage.

If you're looking for some adventure, try the enhanced exploration mod. I only just started playing with it, and it really does add a lot to the offline game. It's no X4 by any means, but it's much better than vanilla IMO.

So I logged in today, after just over a month of a taking a break, and ALL my stuff is gone. Not a single block of mine remains. This is the last nail in my coffin to bury Keen's awful servers in. And with such an aggressive cleanup algorithm (all my grids were powered and very low demand on server resources), you'd think server performance would be amazing, but it sat at 60-70%, and it wasn't even full!

It saddens me greatly that I started this thread so happy only to end up here on such a sad note. I can only hope that Keen greatly improves their offline game later this year, otherwise it's difficult to remain enthusiastic for the future of SE, and that sure does break my heart. Maybe someday I'll find a private server that checks off all the right boxes, but so far no joy.

SE still isn't fleshed out enough as a game to really "work" all by itself as a compelling experience. It's a lot of great systems, more like an engine/platform for creating scenarios than a game, and it really does require players and modders to go the extra mile to create something enjoyable if you want to have a genuine gaming experience. And then you start to run into performance limitations pretty quickly as you mod in more systems or use more features. In the end it's still just extremely sophisticated legos.

I've recently started following this youtube/twitch series called "Outlands," where a group of SE players have made up their own D&D-esque tabletop/boardgame type rules to play out a grand strategy spacefaring RPG kind of thing where all the encounters are played out on a series of prefab maps on a private SE server, with things like fleet movements and resource management taking place on their Discord. They have house rules for ship classifications and a whole points system for allocating block types, hardpoints, etc; as well as faction-specific perks which apply to ship capabilities as well as what types of moves you can make in the boardgame part.

It's very interesting and well thought out. And it's interesting to see which parts of SE they have repurposed to represent something other than its intended purpose. For example they have mandatory beacons on every ship, with rules for what the broadcast range must be set to depending on other rules around ship size, types of blocks used, ship class, etc; and this is all to (in a backwards fashion) simulate radar detectability and stealth mechanics. Like, for a "stealth" ship class, for every X number of blocks below a certain threshold in your build, you get to reduce your beacon's broadcast range by a certain amount.

The end result of all this is a very Expanse-esque multiplayer space RPG/strategy game, with interesting crewed ship combat and seemingly a decent amount of tactical depth.

I don't know if I would have the energy and time to participate in a thing like this, but it really highlights the strengths and shortcomings of Space Engineers in an interesting way, and does seem like a lot of fun.

I think the new AI grids might help change that. Though I think for Space Engineers to really feel "alive" in single player mode, Keen needs to add some AI characters as well. I'm not talking wolves, but enemy engineers with guns. In fact, while I'm excited about AI grids, I also feel it might be a step in the wrong direction, as I'd rather have dumb grids that rely on AI characters to pilot and control them. Everything being automated is empty and quickly boring IMO. This is the main reason I prefer multiplayer (people), but unfortunately that has its own problems.

Yeah, I get what you mean. Space is kinda too empty and lonely and the drone ships just dont cut it. Wrecks, traders, any traffic would be a bit for the better. From the Depths has the AI enemies that constantly spawn with funny stuff. It is a sufficient way to test and proof designs I think.

There's this:

I haven't tried it, though I did co-run a server with the robot drop pods enabled which use the same kind of AI. Seems like you could do Modular Encounter Systems + the 3 main factions it adds + Crew and you'll have . . . something.

As usual the trouble is that more mods = more jank. I've not had great success finding the sweet spot between having the features I want and the performance I want. And even at the best of times SE is still such a clip-through-the-floor or suddenly-explode-and-die-for-no-reason kind of game that building out the world and adding a sense of stakes and consequences can sometimes backfire.

So I thought I would put full on faction life into SE, it's nice being on your own in sp but it can get lonely. I'm not one for mp so I loaded up a few MES mods and wow, did life find me. I was doing o.k. at first, but they called in a large ship and that put the lid on my coffin.

Rumour is the maker of the original MES mod is perhaps going to be, or already is, working with KSH towards the large ai update later this year. Not sure if that is true or not.
I can see why they would want him, it changes the sp experience for SE with the mod/s installed. It's pretty brutal if you come across unfriendly factions. Especially if, like me, your not in a military type ship.

I'm also using the very large planets mod, so the gravity pull on some of these can reach out pretty far into space. This battle took plce in the outer part of that gravity pull.

My Steam does not have Automatons in the long list of betas. Does anyone know why not? Is there a code I need or some other step I'm missing?
