Space Engineers - "Open" Changes Everything

Having some serious sadness over Space Engineers. Logged into official server today, and sim speed was terrible - 60%. When I commented about it, someone said Keen did this on purpose to reduce connection problems.. What? I've been on plenty of servers running at 100% with no lag. Typical Keen running potato servers and relying on gimmicks to make them work. That's pretty much the last straw for using their servers :(

Sad thing is that most of the private servers have silly easy multipliers or way too many mods. Casey's server has gone from hard to impossible, with zero jetpacks (I can understand nerfing them, but removing them totally is DOA for me, especially in space). So I either need to buy my own server to get what I want, or go back to solo which is ultimately boring IMO.

I'm tired of companies taking good games and killing them!!!!!!! Really burns my beard..
Well... sorry to hear that. :(

I'd recently checked my stuff on CA2, and it looks like someone destroyed what was left of my lakebed base, and of course my second supply rocket, while I was distracted by other games. Rocket #2 was mostly about retrieving all the iron that had gone into constructing that base, so no great loss. My little mining ship and my asteroid base are still there. Of course, I'm still tempted to start anew, especially given the new blocks the latest expansion added to the game.

Hmm might need to go check out the AU server where I usually hang out....
That's literally on the other side of the world from me. With a big enough slice of bread, you and I could make an earth sandwich, LOL. I suspect latency might be a problem.

This thread has grown jealous of my recent "affair" with X4 Foundations. Don't worry, Space Engineers, I still love you! However, you might want to look at how X4 does NPCs..

Oh, and Keen, you lost my attention when you let your servers succumb to bit rot! Either give us proper NPCs or rock-solid 100% speed servers if you want to win back my full affections ;)

I log in about once every week or two, and this time I woke up in @Darkfyre99 's orbital base over Thargonia. Looks like I ran out of oxygen aboard the Valkyrie and died in my sleep!

So I had to build a "teleporter" to get back to one of my own ships. I ended up beaming to my first explorer ship, which has been sitting quietly in orbit of a ice-roid ever since I built my new fleet. She still flies, despite being old and full of cobwebs, so I made the jump to the Valkyrie and then flew her back to my starbase where I was able to refill the O2 tanks. I'll just stay parked at my starbase during my "off" season, so not to run out of O2 again. Hopefully the servers get fixed someday, as my short little adventure reminded me of all the things I still enjoy about Space Engineers!

It's been quite some time since I've done any serious gameplay in SE, due partly because I don't game as much in the summer and also because my prime server has been performing terribly for months. Yesterday when I logged in to check on the status of my hibernating engineer, I was VERY surprised to find the server running at FULL SPEED again for the first time in a long, long time! WOOHOO!!!

Today I spent a little bit of time flying around, trying to find where I left my exploration ship, the HMS Pearl. It's out there somewhere, but I forget where! I guess I'll just have to visit every single jump point in my computer (there are a lot) and fly around until I find it. My goal is to convert it to a planetary explorer with atmospheric thrusters so I can return to earth and have a look around. If I can't find it, I'll just scrap it and design a new ship specifically for this purpose. I could use my small grid Scorpion, but I'm in the mood to have a large grid "yacht" to explore this time around, now that I have lots of resources to spare.

I've noticed a few things since I've last logged on. First, my jump coordinates are now in alphabetical order! YES!! Second, the server has doubled the number of PCU available to me, and it seems like my grids are using less PCU than they were before. I don't know if the recent update rebalanced the PCU allotments or what, but this gives a huge amount of extra leeway to build. I can now build a proper space station, along with extra ships. I'd like to have a clone of ships like the Valkyrie that might see PvP combat, so that if I lose that ship I'll have a spare ready to switch into without being "benched" for days.

I still don't have the amount of free time I have in winter to play, but it's so nice to know that my favorite server is working perfectly again, and some great QoL improvements were included in the recent updates. Hurray!!!

Shouldn't you be able to locate it by creating a search mission for that grid? Or do you consider it more fun to search for it the old fashioned way? :)

I found late last night. After looking it over, I'm now debating whether to adapt it or just scrap it and start fresh. It would require a lot of work to adapt (including grinding down tons of heavy plating to replace with light weight armor). In the meantime, I may just whip up another small grid Scorpion so I can take look around earth and see what's changed since I was last there many months ago.

On another note, I find myself comparing SE to NMS lately. While I love the challenge and the sense of "lost in space" that SE gives me, right now the "dip in, dip out" gameplay of NMS is still more compelling. If I want to do something in SE, I really need to set aside a chunk of time to do that thing (for example, construct a new ship or even land that ship on a planet). In NMS, I can just jump in for 15 minutes and explore and enjoy a very "lite" and relaxing game. I guess that makes SE a rainy day weekend game and NMS my "I've got 15 minutes before work for some fun!" game.

Yeah, I think most building games like SE, EGS, Evo etc require time, a fair amount of time.

NMS is a game you can visit then leave go back to for 30mins then leave again. Although, it wasn't for me at launch and for the first year or so, I put some serious hours into NMS, I loved it, still do to a lessor degree now. It will always keep me going back, even if its just until they introduce ship building. ;)

My hours in SE, other than the Arma series are the most of any game. But Arma 2 OA all dlc's & mods is my go to game, better than any other game I can think of.

@Old Duck ,

Well... I decided to revisit the server, and see how my stuff is doing. I ended up spawning at the survival kit aboard your mining ship.
Interesting! That doesn't mean your stuff is gone, since I once respawned at your base for some reason. I'll go in today and turn off the faction spawn flag on that ship in case you want to try again.

How do you like my miner? It uses gyroscopic rotation to drill big, deep holes with only two drills :D

UPDATE - Faction access has been removed from all my spawn points, so you should respawn back at your own base, assuming it wasn't taken out by a cleaner.

I liked the design, and the charging station it was docked to. Thanks for turning off faction spawning. Hopefully, my base is still intact. If not, it just means I’ll have to start over again, which is no big deal, especially since I’ve got everything unlocked. It’ll be New Game Plus!

Well… looks like my station was lost, either due to being found and destroyed, or due to being removed due to inactivity. Looks like when I get around to it, I’ll be starting almost from scratch. Still no plans in my immediate future, though.

I have verified that @Darkfyre99 's base has been scooped off the asteroid by the Borg server cleaner. I'm told that the server cleaner has been tuned to be much more aggressive, which may be one of the reasons the server is performing much better in recent weeks. I do love the extra performance, but this also means there are far fewer ruins and remains to find and explore. It used to be a player could be inactive for months but their assets would remain (which gave people like me things to explore), now I'm guessing these are cleaned on a weekly basis. Thankfully all my own assets have survived, so I guess the key is to log in every week or two to reset the "clean sweep protocol" timer.

In other news, activity on the server has greatly increased, with many nights being almost filled to capacity. I've encountered a number of players, though very few of the old guard. So far, everyone has been peaceful! Even the moon is safe these days.

Now that's a proper Armstrong moment!

Thanks for checking on that. Still not in a place to start a “new” SE vs EGS game, but when I am, I’ll be doing my “Cobra Edition” on the server.

I'm continuing to enjoy Space Engineers since the server was fixed, with my other favorite games X4 & NMS taking the back-burner for awhile. Of all the games I own, SE feels the most "social", because there are so many opportunities to help other players, to share unique experiences (I'll show you my ship if you show me yours, etc), or just have friendly banter in the chat. I think part of this is that each server is kinda like a private group with its own set of "regulars", so over time you get to know the people you're sharing the solar system with. Even enemies are people you build relationships with, though the server has been surprisingly peaceful of late.

Lately I'm just exploring and meeting folk, but eventually I want to build a proper space station and give my Krait design a full rework using new blocks and the latest technology I've unlocked (jump drive, reactors, etc). Once I have something new to show, I'll post some screenshots.

There's something special about being able to peer into our ships from outside, and not only peer in, but actually walk in and around. Ship interiors is one of the things that sets Space Engineers apart from many other space games, and it's one of my favorite features.

What do you think @Stealthie ?
