Space Legs: Completely Missed the Point

I have 2 recommendations for all those folks unable to play EDO, or are not playing it because they dont like the FPS asepcts.

1. Play EDH only.
2. Play EDO, but never disembark.

That is all.
^This. I see a lot of people like OP who are angered and feel "invaded" by a "first person shooter" (hint: Odyssey is NOT a first person shooter, it's NOT Halo. It's more akin to an immersive sim) but it's like dude... you can just play Horizons and be chill.

Personally I LOVE the fact that I can go from a station down onto a planet and back in one smooth transition. That's what I've wanted out of a space game all my life. I LOVE sneaking through occupied and abandoned settlements cutting my way into places I shouldn't be. Combat is entirely optional and yet these guys pretend like there isn't that whole exobiology thing. You can JUST be an explorer and scientist if you wish. No need to pack heat. Hence, NOT a first person shooter.

I don't know anybody that wanted space legs so they could play a garbage FPS in their space ship game about space ships and exploring the universe.

They all wanted space legs so they could get up out of the commander's chair, walk around their ships, around the stations, and possibly do space things in space, like EVAs and boarding other ships.

Frontier completely missed the point. I think they're in trouble. My own play time has dropped from 20+ hours a week, to less than 6 total since Odyssey launched.

What is this FPS people keep talking about in EDO. I've done about 10 on foot missions and not fired a gun once in any of them.

Doesn't sound like a FPS to me.

Must say the main reason /me has not bothered to start up Horizons again, is the incompatible control bindings... :p
And they have known about that bug two updates ago and it still is not fixed.

Seems whatever controller is set for Odyssey "On-Foot" is what Horizons gets set to. Most of the time, when I start Odyssey, I have to check the "on-foot" controller before entering the game. Most of the time, it's set to "Keyboard & Mouse" as is the main controller for Horizons when I enter that game.

Even the obvious bugs don't get addressed.

They didn't "all" want that, no. 99% of the discussion I saw for the last 5 years wanted to be able to walk around stations and outposts, visit shops and bars and interact with other CMDRs there. Hardly ever any mention of walking around inside vehicles (including your own spacecraft).

There is a nearly endless list of excellent and fun ideas I would want. First person shooter matches tied into the faction I'm fighting for is definitely high on that list.

Admittedly, a dozen different types of tricky missions isn't very high, but is an excellent compliment to the space-based missions.

I do definitely want the kind of gameplay on display in Star Citizen. The first person persistence, the true to scale down to the inch reality in front of me. Long train rides through immense cities.

But I am just as intrigued by far thinner randomness. A shiny patina draped over something so immense I literally cannot comprehend it.

And now I have both. For a pittance. Learn to be grateful for your dreams coming true.

Personally I think Odyssey was a bad idea in general (there are so many other things they could have done to enhance the game that would have been much easier to implement and added just as much gameplay (honestly they could have easily added more)). HOWEVER, as someone mentioned up thread - what's done is done.... getting super mad about Odyssey all the time is pointless. Better to use humor to poke fun at it if you feel critical... or just play something else. If other people are enjoying it - good for them.... I mean Australians like vegemite :)

Just remember what the real game is:

OK, you have busted and humbled me. Yeah I complain and moan but in the end, quite honestly, my age and reaction times just don't fit with the shooting. The rest, you are absolutely correct, I should climb down off my high horse and get to finding out.

Frontier completely missed the point. I think they're in trouble. My own play time has dropped from 20+ hours a week, to less than 6 total since Odyssey launched.

The game isn't about Spaceships, Spaceships are a Tool. The game is about the Galaxy, and getting boots on the ground is more a part of that experience than walking around in a ship.

The point is that Mass Effect is literally better than Elite in every way, except the ability to fly a space ship and do shape ship things where you want around the galaxy.

It's not even in the same league when you get out of the ship. It's so bad that I don't even do it. The only reason I own it now is so my squadron isn't split between versions.

No it isn't. There's almost no freedom in Mass Effect's exploration, there's no freedom in the combat. Your judgement is heavily compromised if you think Mass Effect accomplishes anything resembling combat gameplay better than Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. This isn't me saying Odyssey is that great, but Mass Effect's combat was extraordinarily bad.

Most people wanted space legs for gameplay purposes, and that is what we have got. Sure there could be other areas where gameplay could be added, which I am sure, over time, it will be.

I'm very sure that space EVA will be a thing, I am also sure that we will get partial ship interiors at some point too. As to what we have got with odyssey, well, I am having a great time with it. I am unsure why others aren't to be honest.

This doesn't happen for me.
Foot is KB/M (naturally) although part of a named bindings.
Horizons goes back to my (named) Warthog Bindings when launched, similarly when back to Odyssey - perhaps that is one benefit to renaming bindings files? (or I have just been fortunate!)

Both versions do happen.

The reason for this:
Odyssey groups the controls into the four groups (finally). You can set a preset file individually for each of the groups. On save, Odyssey saves the name of all 4 used presets in your Elite config.
Now if you start Horizons or older that only has one preset file, it does not know how to interpret the list from Odyssey and uses just the first entry in that list.

The easiest workaround:
Hold all your bindings in a single preset even in Odyssey (e.g. configure manually the bindings for on foot while keeping your preset file selected).

I agree!
The game is in trouble now as it won't get lots of new players and it'll lose lots of older players. Maybe people will come back if they somehow manage to fix it but their reputation is now bad.
