Spring 2024 DLC Speculation

Alrighty, hot take. I've been seeing this more and more and I'll just say it, I don't really think Planet Zoo lends itself to a sequel. Like at all. The concept is not fruitful in the slightest in my opinion.

I mean, what will that look like?

Planet Zoo 2: Oh yeah, but this time we actually have some flying birds and idk maybe some fish lol
  • Almost all the ABC, iconic zoo animals have already been incorporated to this game.

  • Undoubtedly, many animals will have to be left behind to make room for more, so now you have a 1998 Pokemon Blue and Red situation. Sounds looks a regression to me.

  • DLCs would probably have repeats, do you really want to pay $9.99 so you can have a polar bear or meerkat, TWICE?

  • What new mechanics will be implemented that we don't already have? We have rides, keeper talks and shows, a functional gift shop, etc.
There's still a petting zoo feature I guess? Playgrounds maybe? But is that really enough to warrant a sequel?

  • Will players have to start from scratch with their impressive custom builds?

  • Then there's the issue of fully aquatic animals. imo Marine life is way too vast and diverse to be confined to a simple expansion. They deserve the respect to have their own game.
I had the idea...well, I'm sure other people have as well so I'm not taking this "just" as my idea...but anyways...the idea of not a Planet Zoo 2 but Planet Zoo 1.5.

Can be integrated with Planet Zoo. Would come with somewhere between 25-40 marine animals, and 25-40 avian animals in the upgraded base game.

The catch though - if you upgraded to PZ 1.5, there would be enough game changes, engine changes, that you are not able to play your existing PZ games in the game. But, you would still have all of the Planet Zoo content, meaning the animals and building items, which would get some code upgrades to work on PZ1.5. There would be new content coming as well, in forms of both updates and DLC.

The other option - Upgrade 1.5 is optional. You don't have to get it, and you can still play your existing PZ games. However, there would not be any additional content for Planet Zoo - there might be some stability hot fixes, but actual new content and DLC would end for Planet Zoo once Planet Zoo 1.5 was released.

So you would have to make the choice. Stick with what you've gone now, or at least what we've got after the next pack or two or however many PZ has left. Or move over to 1.5 and start from scratch with your zoo saves.

Big update, no primates, yeah sounds about right. Despite what marine animals and birds could bring, I would be one of those who can't stand the idea of losing progress for a couple shiny animals.
Essentially, the "starting" point of 1.5 would be to get marine and avian animals in the game. So getting somewhere between 50 and 80 animals total in that initial quasi-base game, so that's why those would be the only animals added in at first. Future DLC would have animals besides marine and avian animals, and I'd think maybe PZ1.5 would have some upgrades to climbing and arboreal animals, which would help out a lot with the primates. And just maybe that would encourage Frontier to make more of them.

I do understand about not wanting to lose progress, I would be very much gutted to have that happen to, but I'd make the choice to switch over/upgrade/however you want to describe it. It would not be an easy decision to do though. I mean, as far as progress forward or not, it's an easy decision, but losing all the work you've done for the last 4-5 years would be hard, too.

At least you wouldn't be starting over with a brand new roster. At this point the PZ 1.5 would have the 180 animals we have now (plus other upcoming DLC as few as that may be), and the 50-80 marine and avian animals. That could be anywhere from 240 to nearly 300 animals, and that doesn't even include any future DLC PZ 1.5 would get.

ETA: I realize this is all just hypothetical, but just brainstorm the idea a little further. It's not as though I think this will actually happen.

Ironically enough losing progress or having to start from 0 again arent even that big of cons to me. It would suck yeah, but its something i could get over easily.
My main gripe would be having to do that with potentially a much more restrictive animal and pieces roster.
So for me to even consider it would need to have a compareable roster of animals and scenery to what we have now form the start in addition to enough improvements and additions to even warrant a switch.

In my thoughts on this, planet zoo 1.5 would have the entire planet zoo base game roster but would also include any dlc content you already owned for PZ. Essentially you wouldn’t lose any animals at all in the transition to 1.5. you would just not be able to play save games from PZ due to enough changes in game engine coding.

ETA .for example , if you didnt own the Afric pack in PZ 1, you wouldn’t automatically get that content in the PZ 1.5 “base” game. It would only be included if you owned it for PZ1

The reason people want a sequel and I may be partially to blame for starting the trend is people see it as a way to fixed all the bad things about the game that are deeply embedded into the game itself. We are currently stuck in a position where its do you want to keep all your animals and saves or do you want better gameplay mechanics, better pathing tools, better guest ai and optimisation, better terrain paint, better exhibit animals all of these things would be so incredibly hard from a technical stand point to add to planet zoo as it is without breaking everything.
Also they have literally no reason fish and birds cant be in planet zoo so if that is the only selling point of a sequel I will be very disappointed.

The best scenario would be something other steam games have done in the past is is add essentially a 2.0 where it keeps track of stuff from planet zoo 1 but is its own independent game so they can redo everything update the engine and make the gameplay experience without sacrificing the current roster and having at least some capability of transferring saves.

Well, with the console DLC bundle releasing 26th March, our next new DLC won’t be out until April. Sad to not be able to play with new content during the Easter break.

yes but you might get better stuff than usual in the pack since its delayed.

Unfortunately I've moved into my traditional state of getting bored with building in the game, the last week I have been struggling to stay on the game and I get distracted with other games that I enjoy more or have had updates recently like fall guys. As much as I love making speculation videos they honestly are just an excuse for me not to make speed build videos cause I'm stuck with motivation building.

Maybe you could plan a day trip somewhere an hour or two away (could even do a vlog if you want), maybe use it to inspire you, or just take a break.

Wait, what did I mss? We have a release date? Or a non-relase date for the DLC?
No, just me speculating.

I’m basing it off SteamDB activity, which usually starts 5 weeks before DLC releases. No activity yet means we likely won’t get anything before 9th April. I also don’t think they would want direct competition between a brand new DLC and the release of a DLC bundle on console.
