Spring dlc Speculation 2023

You mean more sizes for the terrariums? I would love that! Because 16m2 for small creatures its too much, I think.
Exactly. More sizes and forms, obviously. The small ones wouldn´t be able to kept an iguana, of course, but for the spiders, scorpions etc would be perfect. Also, the design of the exhibit would deppend of the species, obviously.
Something like this photos:

For example: If you put a diamondback terrapin in a big rectangular exhibit, it´s plants and decoration would be the same but larger, something like this:

I really think the exhibits deserve more love, and with an improvement like this could be something awesome to decorate with

The Exhibit system has been, IMO, the weak point of the game since launch. The Walk Through Exhibit format offers additional creative possibilities, but I still feel like an upgrade to the original exhibits would do wonders for the system. 2 times and 3 or 4 times as large, and 1/2 and 1/3 or 1/4 as small. Stackable as well depending on the size of the tanks. Many "insect/small reptile houses" I've been in have several rows of tanks. There's space between them of course, but it's still in essence stacked. Rounded exhibits in several sizes would also be wonderful.

But all that would be for the base game update I imagine. Finding a DLC theme that would maximize taking advantage of that wouldn't be the easiest thing, but DLC has not always directly correlated to the update.

I was thinking earlier of a reptile house DLC. It could contain 3 or 4 habitat species (Nile crocodile, African spurred tortoise, Asian giant softshell turtle, Asian water monitor/perentie), some objects like lights, glasses and a modern building set and a larger number of traditional exhibit species including a gecko, chameleon, python, cobra and some turtles. It's a larger number of species than usual but should be possible if we get fewer scenery pieces or habitat species that are more similar to what we already have.

I might have an idea for the next update 1.13, this is just an idea, nothing real. Here is my idea and thoughts:

-Update 1.13 and Rainforest Animal Pack-
Release date: 11 or 18 of April

-Update 1.13-
1: Exhibit upgrade: The exhibits now have new sizes (Tiny, 1x1, 2x2, 3x3 and 4x4), new forms (Cubic, Spheric, Round, etc.) and new decorations and foliage for them, as well new feeders and enrichment items for the animals.

2: Paintbrush Foliage: As in Zoo Tycoon 2, you will have the terrain brush and the foliage brush. You need to select or a biome or specific plants to work.

3: Brachiation added to: Western Chimpanzee, Bonobo and Bornean Orangutan

4: Various bug fixes and major quality of life

-Dlc: Rainforests Animal Pack-

It's time to venture into the lushest rainforests around the world, discover what animals await you with the Planet zoo: Rainforest Animal Pack!

What houses this vast ecosystem, you ask? A variety of animals that inhabit the rainforests of Asia, South America, Oceania and Africa.

Say hello to the red river hog, with his extraordinary sense of smell; the Geoffroy's spider monkey, with his incredible agility; the mighty sumatran rhinoceros, the smallest of the rhinos; the agile and elusive Ocelot; the curious Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo; the strange fossa; and the elusive Indian muntjac. These come with new and unique behaviors, like the perimeter sniffing of the red river hog, or the agile brachiation movements of the spider monkeys. We are sure that both you and your guests will enjoy these new species!

Your visitors will now be able to enjoy a wonderful species of snake: the emerald tree boa!

Not gonna lie, I would be so devastated if we got a Rainforest DLC and no sloth. I love the other species here, but I feel they have places in a possible Islands Pack, another likely candidate for later this year. I’d say that a Rainforest Pack with no sloth would be a massive oversight, as one of the most requested species and one of the most recognisable rainforest animals!

A sloth would also fit well in a nocturnal DLC. If they continue the trend of mixed walkthrough exhibits, why not make a nocturnal walkthrough with sloths, tarsiers, mouse lemurs and slow lorises? I now this is wishful thinking, but you get the idea. Different groups of animals but similar behaviour. Then rainforests can be used for parrots or more generally birds.

I’d hope the sloth would be a habitat animal, which gives it much more hope of being added. Tbh I don’t mind if its exhibit or habitat, as long as it gets added at all.
I also don’t see a nocturnal pack happening anytime soon - the Twilight pack was essentially a pseudo-nocturnal pack, so I think unfortunately the chances of that theme have been DRASTICALLY reduced (although I’d love another nocturnal animals pack). I’d say the best chance we have of getting a sloth would be a Rainforest Animal Pack or a Treetops Scenery Pack!

I'd hope for the sloth to be a habitat animal too, but if it were a choice between an exhibit animal (be it walkthrough or non-walkthrough) or not at all, I'd definitely prefer it be an exhibit animal.

A treetops or arboreal pack would be great. The Sloth, another Gibbon, a larger new world Monkey such as the Howler or Spider, and a smaller New World monkey like a Tamarin, a Tree Kangaroo, Tamandua, the Aye-Aye, another very distinct Lemur like the Indri or even a New World Porcupine would all be possibilities. I realize that's rather primate heavy, but they would all look very different and have a variety of sizes, and let's face it, the game needs more New World Monkeys badly.

Not gonna lie i feel like the next "Rainforest or something similar" has to be kinda primate heavy if they are to somehow catch up in the PZ roster :D.
On the other hand id be a little sad about the rainforest animals that would have been booted out of such a pack to make room for the primates

Very true on all parts. Obligate non-primate inclusion for either Rainforest or Arboreal is the Sloth. Would really hope a Rainforest set would also include the Red River Hog, but other than those two if they went full on primate I'd be quite happy. And I'm not even a huge "I need more primates" person.

I am a huge "I need more primates" person, but i would still want stuff like agutis, coatis, duikers and a couple more. So its a double edged sword for me :D.
I really wished we would have maybe 2 "sterotypical monkeys" in the basegame

Worry not, its not going to happen.
Its going to be miracle if 2 primates will somehow make in.
On the other hand 2-3 carnivorans seems like another safe bet with ocelot and coati being nearly guaranted with bush dog and random rainforest marten being options for third.

Based random rainforest marten and bush dog mention

I'm gonna ask a different question, for everyone.

It seems everyone wants all packs except the farm/petting zoo pack to be animal packs.

But, we still need 2 scenery packs this year. So, which pack concepts would you choose to be scenery packs?
Who says we're getting 2 of each. I personally think we have enough scenery and would prefer having all animals packs from now on. Of they do that though could still add a few poles and plants like they did with grasslands.

Who says we're getting 2 of each.
Because the target audience of Planet Zoo is a mix of builders and people who don't care about building that much. By doing a full year with only animal packs and have a very limited set of scenery items, you risk alienating that part of your target audience and missing out on that income. People who don't really care about new scenery pieces still get 5 new animals with scenery packs, that's only 3 animals less than an animal pack, so they don't loose as much in comparison.

It's kinda the same reason why we haven't seen and probably won't see mono type packs like an entire reptile pack, an entire exhibit pack or an entire primate pack. It's very specific to a subset of the target audience of Planet Zoo, and you risk alienating other parts of your audience who might entirely skip on the pack. And well, it's still a business so they have to make money, so it's better to make sure that people won't skip packs.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a zoo builder first and foremost, so animals are as essential as scenery pieces in my eyes and I think animal packs were a great addition. But I also wouldn't want no scenery packs at all because there's plenty of scenery still to be added, especially basic zoo pieces like mesh sets, easy ways to make glass domes, mud walls used in enclosures etc.

All in all, if we're getting another year of support, I think we're pretty much set for another year of two animal packs and two scenery packs, it seems to be the balance that has been working for Frontier.

But, we still need 2 scenery packs this year. So, which pack concepts would you choose to be scenery packs?
To answer this question, there's two obvious ones for me personally.

A deserts pack for me seems like one of the easiest packs to do scenery for. Round boulders (which we don't have any of), barrels, skulls and bones, even a Wild West theme would work. Because as much as I can understand people going "but a Wild West theme is better for Planet Coaster", ever since the Africa Pack themed sets in DLCs have been made in such a way that the pieces themselves are quite flexible. So for me, I'm all for a Wild West theme, because I know that means we're going to get a bunch of rustic wood pieces that are going to be super useful for more grounded zoos.

On top of that, another set that can be added to a deserts pack is pieces to make glass domes with. Just an easy glass dome set would honestly already do so much, because lets face it; the current pieces just never allow us to make good seamless domes.

When it comes to the other pack, a coastal pack could add some much needed marine scenery. As much as a like the fact that the Aquatics pack added basic zoo scenery, I feel like it missed the boat (hehe) a bit by not including more marine stuff like buoys, lifebuoys, all kinds of port scenery etc. This is again a theme where they can add more wooden sets to that allow us to have some more variety in the more "basic" zoos which don't have tons of money to do big concrete buildings everywhere.

I would choose a ‘Treetops Pack’ in Spring and a ‘Children’s Zoo Pack’ in Autumn.

Treetops would feature arboreal animals, with treehouse and wooden walkway building sets, as well as many new trees and plants and woodchip pieces. Would do well with the ‘blooming Spring’ feeling.
-Linnaeus’ Two Toed Sloth
-Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo
-White Nosed Coati
-Mantled Guereza
-Scarlet Macaw, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Military Macaw

Children’s Zoo would give us classroom and mural building sets, as well as some petting zoo scenery and educational plants such as fly traps and pitcher plants. Would fit well with the ‘back to school’ September feelings.
-African Crested Porcupine
-Golden Lion Tamarin
-Nigerian Dwarf Goat
-Scottish Highland Cattle
-Barn Owl, Tawny Owl

I’ve made full announcement posts for these (sad, I know)! I’d love to see these two as our scenery packs of 2023!
