Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

If I recall correctly Dante was probably one of the more fair handed posters I ve seen in relation to Elite and SC discussions. At least at the time. I may be wrong but I think he was also a denizen of the original Elite katamari thread in ye old SC forums. I am sure he is still around somewhere.
He was, I remember him in our discussions :)

Having nothing to do has nothing to do with 'who' are the ones creating the things to do. Adding more cooks doesn't always make the recipe better or allow you to get your food any quicker.

Things we know are coming.

1. Station repair jobs. Vending machine re-stocking.

2. Civilian transport infrastructre, regular scheduled flight routes by NPC 'airlines'. There are also planned holiday travel services which include entertainment and accommodation.

3. Dynamic events, more often and at varying scales - some long duration over multiple episodes some local and short duration.

4. Refuelling/Rearm/Resupply.

5. Salvage/Reclamation.

6. Rescue services - in his last ISC appearance Tony Zurovec mentioned that NPC's attacked by pirates along trade routes would put out distress beacons the players can answer because the NPC AI ship has been destroyed and they are in their escape pods.

7. In-verse competitions such as racing (there are other sports coming too) which will be held on an almost daily basis. Players and NPc's will be able to swim, we have lakes and rivers coming. Kayaking or white water rafting may be a possibility. We have ice planets so that we could have snowboarding, skiing, snowmobiles, ice skating on the frozen lake at New Babbage. If they are going to put pool tables and basketball courts into the game you can be sure there will be events planned around those activities.

8. Wild animal hunting/capturing. Exotic fish trading.

This isn't even a complete list since it doesn't even touch on the scripted/organised local activities. Each location in the verse will have both Empire-wide holidays and events as well as local events, they also have local sporting events specific to that location. Surfing on Tangeroa for example. We know that Orison will have guided tours for 'tourists' conducted by NPC's. The Chairman's Club Handbook for Concierge members talks about the Port Renatus Metropolitan Opera House on Mars and Fashion Week on Terra III. We have the minimum of some game features now simply as proof of concept, for example the in-game shopping experience will be hugely expanded once the server capacity expands.

Don't forget the time sink that having your own home and fleet of ships will be just to manage and maintain them.

CIG are very keen to facilitate player organised events - we have bars in the game, couple this with FOIP/VOIP and you can have quiz night or karaoke night. Everything doesn't have to be about 'quest missions', the game universe will have plenty of entertainment and more places to visit and things to do than most players will be able to manage in a lifetime. Have you heard of the in-game internet service? The Spectrum? It will have regular shows (news and entertainment) and events too.

The problem is that the game is already huge and complex and so takes time to build, making it more complex than already planned won't solve anything and it isn't even necessary to have a system to make player based 'quests' since players will be a small minority in the game universe. The Quantum system will dwarf any players input.

[EDIT] How cool would it be to attend the in-game School Of Xenoliguistics to learn Xi'An, Banu or Tevarin - or even Vanduul. Or to have to attend for a flight/driving exam to get a license for a road vehicle or space ship.

This seems like the ravings of a madman or a fool, but this is Star Citizen we are talking about, so might actually be based on stuff CIG have actually said.

Vending machine restocking?! Yes, i can see people wanting to be Arnold Rimmer instead of Han Solo.

NPCs putting out distress signals if attacked? Ok.... now, i could see this happen as random events that are randomly generated. But i get the feeling what is being talked about here is all NPCs all being tracked in real time, both the traders and the pirates and simulating what they are doing. And i'm sure CIG have talked about doing this. I'm also sure it will put massive overhead not just on the server side code but also on the netcode, since if those NPCs are flying anywhere close to another player, those players need to know about them. On top, alert goes out and... someone responds, spends 5 minutes getting there? 10 minutes. If its being simulated properly, the target will be destroyed long before anyone can arrive.

"How coll would it be to attend the in game school of (alien language) or attend exams to get a licence?" - oh, i can answer this one. It wouldn't. It would be rubbish and appeal to such a niche part of the playerbase it would effectively be wasted development time.

Sadly ED players have to cut into red panels using the Arc Cutter instead of using a magical salvage beam.

Hold on, this rings a bell.
Where's the fidelity in that!? They should have roving bands of trolleys that charge and kill players...they're already most of the way there for that.😏

Well thats an interesting thread. Starts off with people redefining white knight as 'someone who explains it cant be done in current state as the code / tech is rubbish and can't handle it atm' and ends up with a discussion about EDO and why SC streamers are playing EDO.

Meanwhile someone got rather SaltE yesterday in ATC but lost the link....he started losing patience with people using future tense as current tense....its like seeing someone wake up to the brainwashing in real time.

Well that would annoy me to no end.
I hate random things spawning on me, when I in fact just want to mine/explore/salvage in peace.

Well, you are also in luck with EDO because, while I suspect the POI are still randomly generated for each planet, now you can scan them from orbit and detect them all even before going in, so you can actually choose if you do them or not.

True, the threat indicator is pretty neat.

It's a real shame we don't have iCache yet. That's all that's keeping me from playing the game regularly.
I just can't deal with losing all my cargo or mission progress, because of a simple disconnect. And then have to wait for my ship to be retrieved unless I pay some silly fee.

The use of future-as-present tense is quite a phenomenon in itself and i've not seen such extensive use of it before SC became a thing.

Its always funny when you get into a debate with one of the faithful, especially when they start comparing ED and SC, and you can simply reply "But SC doesn't have those things" and if they say "But it will one day" then you can say "Ah, so we are talking not about what each game has but what each game may one day have or not" and then proceed to enter fantasy land with what ED might have one day.
