Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

There is 100 flyable ships now? I kinda doubt it and you're just exaggerating for the cause but the real point is how ridiculous it is to claim it's fast going when it's 10 years and they weren't even able to get the networking solution figured out. And flat out failed to deliver what they sold to people. Picking up speed and coming together, right?
Including variants, yes there are over 100. Core ships/vehicles there are over 60

Yes, I know Mole, I'm being unfair again. Not really though, 10 years is just a nice mark to test progress against. I hope the mining dude make more of the gameplay that actually works. And if the rate of speed gain looks so utterly mahoosive now that Chris Robbers has been sent off that is because the speed before was not just glacial but even regressive at times.

SA guys think this might be more than a passing oopsie…

You know what this means?
One guy managed to code in the box years ago, and they have been copying and pasting it into everything to do with carrying things now..

I worked on a project where something like this happened, it was a nightmare. Someone who didn't really "get" OOP accidentally caused every single physical object in the game to be derived from "Crate". This wasn't discovered until it was way too late. Platforms were crates. Rocks were crates. Bombs were crates. People were crates. Absolute nightmare. Mind you, this was a cheap licensed throw-it-out-the-door-quick type game.

Sorry, I forgot that SC fanbois regularly confuse art assets with gameplay.
I think that’s because they don’t realize that good gameplay is hard but “cheap.” Good art assets are “easy” but expensive.

I used quotes here because good engineers may be payed more than good artists are, and talent and/or practice is of course needed for good art, but the ratio of artists to engineers rises precipitously as the quality of art rises. That’s why most game development studios wait until the end of the project to do the art and assets, relying on white boxes and trial art to test the core systems with.

Can I just say, apropos of nothing, that I can’t wait for the materials refactor, with its reworked mass for everything from spaceships to crates…
I think we can put that to the rest of the nollocks, like 1000 players per instance. It's Robbers waffling and he is gone now. If this mess is ever to "pick up speed and come together" in any form there is going to be more ballast overboard with more Chadwick, Tony and Tyler waffling to appease the rabid fanatics, until their waffling has become equally dispensable when the audience shifts to more sanity.

There are actually about that many at 'flight ready' status. If you exclude the skin variants, exactly 100 in fact. And with the 400i that's 101 now I guess:

That's a lotta assets. (If not always a lot of promised game mechanics ;))

The missing ones are mainly the big complex expensive ones.

This. Very much this.

144 types of ships sold. Its quite clear what has kept funding going, but also explains where a lot of time as been consumed. For years we saw CIG adding new ships when the game was already suffering from inflated scope to keep the sales coming in. They became hooked on huffing JPGs to keep the money addiction going. Each ship will be a ball and chain around the developers collective necks as they progress (as we can see with the big ships they can't deliver yet). Many of those ships don't have the gameplay they were designed for.

Also, i'm sure we can look forward to forum classics like:

When will CIG add more ships? There aren't enough!
Why does the X exist? Nobody flies it?
Buff the X! Nerf the Y!

Not all are paid by the companies they promote though. It can be hard to know. We knew certain streamers were gifted stuff - computers, JPGs, etc. I wasn't aware that it was done with ED, possibly just never noticed the sponsored streamer stuff until sovapid pointed it out.

I did once see a video by OA where he was sponsored by Tobil, and i raised it as an issue with him, saying i like his normal neutral/factual take on things and was concerned he was being unduly influenced by the money. His response was that he has been a big fan of Tobil for a long time so it didn't affect his opinion, which I have no reason to disbelieve, but one of my favourite streamers getting kickbacks for talking about even a product they like still leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
His advertisement for the Tobii 4C for ED certainly prompted me to go buy one a few years ago. He showed it's use in my favourite game...which was more relevant to me than trolling around the Tobii website. :)

They still have to refactor all the ships to add the pipes for the virtual air to flow through. Unless that has now been dropped. Maybe that was actually what caused some sort on internal shakeup when Chris went and told the artists and modellers they had to redo all the ships and the devs had to code virtual air flowing through virtual pipes. Maybe CR reported to Calders the ship refactor was going to add another 12 months to the release of SQ24 because they want fires to spread on ships based on where the virtual air was located. I presume at some meeting some dev stuck up their hand and said "Why don't we just abstract it away with 1 for air in room and 0 for no air in the room?" and CR immediately fired them for being an American't making HR have to find a new specialist when that guy was actually important and useful.

On that topic...

Number of open positions has gone up in recent months, now at 124. Wow, outstanding positions for 17% of their current staffing level. That's crazy.

So many artist and designer positions. Oh, they need a forum moderator in Germany! Anyone want to apply?

It’ll be interesting if they do dump the materials madness, for sure.

I would note that they’re still talking full Crobblers though (despite his apparent downsizing). The single shard, 'dynamic server meshing' etc, all of these things are still declared aims (despite the current work being far more prosaic).

All of the latest PU additions are declared to be "Chris Robert’s vision" repeatedly, and cling to the shape of his grandiose plans (Death of a Spaceman leg breaks and the like).

And the roadmap isn’t exactly lacking in Chris-flavoured follies…

They may be breaking from Chris’s traditions in actually getting some 'end game' features out of the door. But it seems they’re going dance to the beat of his drum for a while to come yet…

They’re way ahead of you commando…

What do you think, they lived the good life with Robbers. 10 years of checks cashed without much to deliver.

There is a major blocker and that was when they couldn#t figure out how to route the HVACS through the door systems and logic.
