Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Are you one of the few in this thread who actually enjoy playing Star Citizen?
Oh yeah I'd say anyone with good enough hardware and love for sci-fi and space games in general will love Star Citizen if not for the freedom it gives to players, the amount and variety of ships and all the detail and care put into the universe. It really feels alive and lived in and the vistas are simply breathtaking. I'd say flying around the planets and admiring the vistas is worth the 45$ fee alone.

I used to be a Fan but now am a whole Air Conditioner.

The latest event gave all ships to fly for free so I tried to make the most of it with the limited game time I got.

Hard to believe these screens are all taken in the same planet, but that's Star Citizen for ya. Quality over Quantity.

No offense, but EDO and Mass Effect stations look decidedly better, and neither of them are considered particularly breathtaking in 2022. its cool that you like it, but lets be real here. SC looks pretty dated already at a point in development where it should be looking cutting edge.
This looks absurdly dated, like PS3-era shovelware-MMO dated. I mean, this is a CryEngine game released almost half a decade ago:

Yeah, no. Its neither. Dont get me wrong, I dont personally care much about graphics. I'd be fine with SC graphics if it had a large gameworld, depth, proper flight model, some semblance of balance, no p2w, a range of activities and a fairly stable quality. But it has none of it. And "Well, it looks like a free korean MMO from 2011!" isn't really a saving grace for me.

I would add that since then, we've had Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn series that both do natural environments much, much better (also AI, pathfinding, physics...), and that now in 2022 even indie programmers can use UE5 quixel megascans to render strikingly realistic graphics with next to zero budget compared to CiG. (also in the mean time we've had a lot of AAA releases that have superior graphics, i'm just getting to the top of the list here..). CiG are stuck with a 2008-era engine that no amount of handwavium and magic jesus tech will help stay afloat.
(edit) example of UE5 assets (that any indie studio can use) - and yeah, all of that has been done in 90 days (a number that's significant for some people here..):

On a different note I love it when I have large qt distances cause in between I can do something productive like the dishes or laundry without interrupting my playtime

I love it that i don't have to play the game while playing the game so it doesn't interrupt my playtime.

Imagine someone posting that drivel on the ED forums :p

I thought the Invictus event had finished but last night I had an Invictus event inside EDO when an NPC called Invictus jumped me. Unfortunately his free fly demonstration was not up to much, but it was a nice troll.

LTNT Dan's image of the concourse in SC was interesting. This is an area where a direct comparison to EDO can be made as they are not to my knowledge full PG in EDO and surprisingly they are no better, if not worse. I am also suspicious FD might be "copying" the look. The other pictures shown are handmade set pieces designed to look nice, hard to compare to EDO as earth like worlds are not in that version, but they don't look good against 2022 tech in AAA games, instead they look like what I would anticipate FD will accomplish if they eventually do full earth likes with PG."

The "look" of SC is "Artstation kitbash toolkit", so sure you can easily find the SC look...

And you're looking at concourse from an environment art perspective, but again that's not what's make a good level design. And in this topic EDO puts SC to shame. Even Yamiks admitted that EDO concourses as infidelicious as they are have very clever level design.

Everyone is copying "the look", it's essentially the same look in all sci-fi, grittier in some, shinier and hi-tech in others, 2001 Space Odyssey look, which was also essentially copied from ideas and concept art that existed decades prior. Basically, it's all copied!

That plastic generic Sci-Fi look can be found in many games. Mass Effect added a bit of nice retro-scifi vibe to it and ultimately held on its own. But that requires consistent art direction.

CIG sells backers JPGs. In return backers produce JPGs which look good which gets people to buy more JPGs from CIG.

The wheel turns.
Villainizing people who enjoy playing a game and posting screenshots is below low. I could say the same thing about people who post cool Odyssey screenshots, but I won't, because it's absolutely absurd. If you had any idea how ridiculous you lot look with your constant nonstop whining and hyperbole, you might just be embarrassed.
