Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

On the subject of UI's, on of the things I genuinely like is that each manufacturer's HUD feels very different and relay different pertinent information.

In comparison, I consider it a shame that a Hauler uses the same as a Vulture, for example.
Why would a hologram HUD BE different? What would actually change between ships? I mean there's no functional differences, without single role ships.

I can imagine the complaints in ED though if they were specific to ships. Why is my Vulture HUD this horrible abomination, why can't it be the same as my Vulture?

We're never happy.

Excellent.

I want to clarify my recent post regarding the 'undesirable project', it's very important to me that it's understood that my announcement of involvement with the 'undesirable project' was not an endorsement of the 'undesirable project'. I was however paid by and had a contract with the 'undesirable project'.

Happens to me all the time, that.

Here is my suggestion for CiG to protect dividends gain more money that will be applied directly to development: Sell instanced habs that have a magic locker that allows you to reacquire account bound items. Also make these habs stupidly expensive. Gifted or stolen items won't be returned via this magic locker.

So you can use your armors and weapons freely without worrying that if you lose them you'll need to wait for the next big patch to get them back. Basically monetize character reset in a sneaky way.

This would be an incredibly shady way to make money, so CiG will love it.

Well, because much like in the real world, similar airframes have different designs based on their designers preferences, their age, role and manufacturers approaches.

It's why for example an F-18s HUD is different from a Harriers, Mirage or SU's.

Its a nice touch that makes the world a little more 'believable.

Sure I get that.

But my problem with it is what would actually be different? i mean, its a hologram, and every ship and every manufacturer has the same weapons/modules etc. So the same info would be shown, ie fire groups, altitude, messages etc.

So what would change? The position on the hud, the colours?

Really the difference between a Harrier and an F16 is the cockpit itself, the hud is just a green projected display with very similar info, surely.

So I genuinely don't know how different they could actually be, just changing position on the hologram would seem a waste of effort. In fact aren't most hud elements in most fighters in the same place roughly (I don't really know)

Basics should be same, altimeter, speedometer, flight path indicator, horizon indicator and so on...

The basic data displayed are the same and as technology matures they pretty much gravitate towards a common most efficient layout with minor differences like car dashboard, aircraft HUD and should apply to spaceships too if spaceflight had become standard in the universe.

Maybe a comparison between Russian HUD vs NATO HUD vs Chinese HUD might show more differences?

As far as I understand (based though only on simulation experience) those basics are same nowadays.....

If we take cars for example, most generally follow the same layout, with some changes in asthetics/style. But i know the indicator is in one place, the wipers are in another, and its the same on almost all cars.

Then you get in a car where something is a bit different from what you're used to. And its downright annoying. Fortunately, its mainly stuff you rarely need, and rarely in a rush, like fog lights, although i've seen the hazard warning lights in a variety of locations, which isn't good when you need to hit it quick, but that's offset by it usually being a big red button (not always though!).

Oh, and then some "clever" designers think its a great idea to build car stereo controls in the left or right levers, so you try and signal or turn on your wipers and because you're not used to it, you accidentally change the radio station or something.

Oh, and i'll never ever buy a car that has car functions that you might want to use while driving on a touchscreen. Stupidest idea ever.

Ah, and the final one, previous car had reverse on the left of the stick, current car has reverse on the right of the stick. Anyone want to guess how many times I almost threw my car into reverse while meaning to go for 5th gear when i'd just bought it? Muscle memory FTW!
