Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I feel a sense of relief that the girlfriend in this case discovered the destructive and addictive behaviour before they both tied the knot. Be it online poker, drugs, drink or star citizen...the dude has a self obsessed behaviour trait that's going to end up with him alone and more than likely penniless with family or friends having to pay the price for his nonsense in the end.

I've absolutely no sympathy for him as an individual, no more than I would for any junkie (be it indeed a true case rather than trolling for lols), but it's as well he didn't drag a marriage and kids down with him when he's been spending the rent money on nothing more than a selfish habit 🤷‍♂️

Let's hope he doesn't have any pets he can starve or neglect in order to buy more pixel spaceships...

Meanwhile...back at the ranch. My own uncontrollable spending habit has resulted in a VKB Gladiator EVO NXT stick (with premium grip RH) to replace my broken X56 and the over industrial Warthog stick I just hated...plus a ridiculously expensive Nacon revolution 5 pro controller to use with the PS5...since I disliked the Sony dual-sense symetrical thumbstick cheap plastic rubbish from the start

No pets or wives were harmed or offended in the pursuit of either of those purchases
I bought her off with a new set of branded seat covers for her Land Rover and a new mattress topper

Found the angry dev in the comments 😁

A game designer of 6 years or so seemingly.

Some choice pull quotes...

Star Citizen was built ass-backwards; from art-based concept into a MMO. The reason no other developer has done this is because they didn’t need to; they built the foundation up from their netcode. Star Citizen has abhorrent net code and they’re trying to fix their way into it.

It's flipping insane how they're literally just writing up different ways to say "we paid ourselves for XXXX" and their base is like "see! they're investing all that money into the project!"

They don't understand that expenditures are salaries and the salaries at Cloud Imperium are flipping disgusting.

But you’re right. I do have a beef. I work in game development and I flipping hate scams like this. And this is absolutely a racket.

Interesting - I've never considered it an addictive behaviour. Gaming, yes, but buying digital stuff not. I mean I get girls on fashion shopping spree and dudes buying toys and tools as a hobby, but jpgs?

Watch this space - AI is being tuned as we speak to provoke these base human traits. Humans are just hairless apes with pattern recognition machines on top of legs- rather simple to control our emotions and actions, especially in the vulnerable.

Oh yes it certainly is. I had a friend with depression, comes in bouts, and whenever he used to get down he would go on a buying spree on the game of the moment, so yes it is certainly a psychologically addictive thing, but the exact details of how it works you would need a professional, I'm not, all I have is personal experience of how it affects some people.

It's not the buying of the jpegs per se but the perceived 'status' in owning them, the more the merrier...or the bigger the better. Ci~G have promoted this elitist owners club status right from the beginning.

Harley Davidson have done exactly the same thing since the management buyout of the company and trademark in 1983 with the creation of HOG, the Harley Owners Group. If there ever was a comparison to be made, Ci~G and Harley Davidson are it....exactly the same with concierge members and members of HOG. I've been on the receiving end of both HOG and Ci~G's concierge elitist attitudes and there's not much difference in the predatory and FOMO marketing mentality that drives their idiosyncrasies 🤷‍♂️

I bought only one of my Harleys from a dealership back in 1998 (included was the life membership to HOG)...I still get marketing emails from Harley Davidson at least twice a month and regular invites to all sorts of HOG events, even though I've already been banned from HOG several times over the years...for 'persistent heckling and abuse of prominent members', according to the various emails I received after making the mistake of attending a few of their Ultra-Glide owner biased circle-jerk events (I wouldn't be seen dead riding a 'Glide, it's the equivalent of buying a Legatus Navium pack and wearing a T-shirt advertising it)...there's another comparison with Ci~G right there 🤭

Endorphin loop - it's a well known problem for gambling addicts for example. The predatory marketing from CiG exploit this fully, one good example is their usage of artificial scarcity to create FOMO, which is a well known lever of that endorphin mechanism.
And yes, one can get professional help out of this, just like gambling addiction and such.

As I said...Harley D and Ci~G could be FOMO marketing twins. Link from the latest email I got from my 'local' dealer in Glasgow today. Good things come to those who don't wait indeed...like 10 years of debt :D

I had to look up what heckling means. I can imagine Mole doing something like that. Probably spraying beer over people in a futile attempt to suppress a laugh.
I was a tad more rude...on the last occasion about 10 years ago, I rolled up my never sewn on HOG Life Member back patch and suggested to the Dunedin chapter president where he should shove it

In all the decades that I've been riding bikes, it wasn't until I met HOG that I realised that not all people who ride motorbikes are bikers...

I couldn't spare room for that tat on my cut anyway :)

Exploring new space in the gaming industry

Anonymous Employee
Current Employee, more than 1 year

Pros

Great company vision, passionate coworkers, opportunity to change the gaming industry. Extremely talent team members in every department.

Cons

The largest crowdfunded video game in history is exploring uncharted space and not for the faint of heart. As a highly talented team of developers, they have their pick of the best of the best, so bring your top game to make a difference in this studio.

Or is 'change the gaming industry' the new 'keep doing what you're doing'? ;)

Some additional thoughts on the financials thingie:

Publishing, community and marketing alleged spend
2020: $15 millions
2021: $25 millions
2022: $30 millions

I strongly suspect a generous chunk of this goes for streaming / content creator view botting services, and to direct or indirect funding of some content creators, as was possibly the case for Rexzilla in the past etc.

According to CR last letter, more than a year ago, the actual number of SC players is still a very small fraction of players than in other competitor games (1.8 million paying accounts, which likely represent a much smaller number of real players given that owning multiple accounts seems to be a very common occurrence in SC), and I therefore strongly suspect CIG is keeping SC content creator and streaming stats high artificially with "marketing" money.

By the way, no letter from CR for 2023 yet? That is surely good news for SC.
