Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

It's a nice life lesson though. Maybe the next time they get the urge to spend almost a thousand dollars on virtual space ships they'll think twice before taking out the credit card.
At least he can try to get some cash back by selling on the grey market. Imagine if he spent this money on a vacation, no way to get back one penny of it...

We’ve had discussions in the past about whether some backers spend more than they should on SC. Another example cropped up today:

Obviously it’s entirely their mistake that they jumped that deep that quickly, using contingency money. But still, damn...

I dont wanne jump on the "should you invest into a video game to begin with" path because that leads to "I do what I want with MY money" just....dont whine about it please. Yeah things change and what was disposable income before suddenly isnt anymore (which means it never was disposable income to begin wih....). I d like to say I m leaching some petty gleefull enjoyment from posts like this but really.....its simply annoying anymore. If you cant be bothered to be rational or logical about stuff and get a harsh lesson in real life from the world there is a line going "grow up and don the adult pants" that fits perfectly here.

Yes, imagine if someone bought something and got what they paid for. What a scurrilous scenario that would be.
Well I can see the anger in people from paying for a holiday trip which turns out to be a scam.

Only....this vacation trip has a 1 star rating and the review section is FULL of posts warning of its scammy nature and that its not what it claims to be. Ignoring all the warning signs out in the open and going in with blindfolds doesnt help with making a splash once you figure out for yourself that the other people were right.

Assuming they hadnt 'received' the holiday eg if it was cancelled or postponed by the provider they would have recourse to the Consumer Protection Laws for demanding refunds, or maybe an Industry Watchdog or they could sue in court or they probably have Travel Insurance.

If they booked 5 Star and got 1 Star they could still get money back for false advertising.

CIG have modified the T&Cs repeatedly to avoid legal recourse. By now not defining a delivery date they can extend it for a long time. There is no Industry Watchdog. No Insurance Company would ever back the backers. You can sue in court but you have given up all rights to sue in court under latest T&C, so it will probably take a Mass Action Lawsuit before its worth a well paid lawyer to match CIGs well paid lawyers.

I can't defend the guy in the Reddit post. After so many years, a little research would have gone a long way.

Now, if he was an original backer who had been trying to get money back from CIG after half a decade of delays and what amounts to a bait and switch from the initial Kickstarter campaign, I'd have more empathy.

That said, in both cases, there are no finished games to be had, and no one is "playing" - they're paying CIG to test builds - which, I mean, I don't have enough bourbon in my house to wrap my head around that, let alone all of the other things that have taken place on Mr. Roberts' Wild Ride.

Adults are responsible for their own decisions, including spanking hundreds or more of dollars on an incomplete video game.

There should be plenty of buyer beware notices about SC by now. The sixth search result for "star citizen" is an article about how it has raised $340M and has no release date. The seventh is earlier when it only had 300M and about how it must be stopped.

Makes buying DayZ look like a wise decision in comparison.
If you are sensible and a bit worldly wise then you should know to do a bit of research before spending your hard earned money on anything. If however you are a bit naive or innocent and fall victim to the rogues and conmen out there, it does not mean the you are the one to blame. You are the victim. It is the rogues and conmen who are the villains and should be reviled much as they would like to put the blame on the victims.
If you were sensible enough to do your research then good for you, but you should still have sympathy for those fleeced but the crooks. It's the crooks you should condemn.

I completely agree. At this point, no one can claim to be suckered into buying into the project. There are occasional posts on Reddit about "My friends laugh at me for buying imaginary spaceships" or "How can I convince someone that this is a good idea?"

I would've given leeway up to 2017 if someone told me they had no idea what they were getting into, because, outside of Derek, the Goons, and a few skeptics here, you had to really search to compile a list of what other people in the industry thought of Chris Roberts and Star Citizen.

If someone ignores the criticism now in 2021, then that's on them, and they convinced themselves of parting ways with their money before they went to the storefront.

Scammers have culpability for running scams. People tune into Twitch, see the pretty ships and buy the game. Why? Because if it was a scam, how could streamers be playing it and how could it look so nice? Why would Twitch allow a scam like that? SC takes advantage of the context to appear like a normal business.

You missed the initial post... The guy was not complaining about SC, he just want to get some money back because he needs it now for something else.
That's not really the point either...a purchase of a few spaceships for SC is still a purchase, just the same as any other transaction. Once that money has been spent...it's gone, he can't just turn around a few months later and decide he now wants that cash back simply because he's a bit skint. It's completely irrelevant if it's Star Citizen...or whether it's regarded as a scam or not. It's about fiscal responsibility. Don't be spending next months rent money on something you can't really afford.
