OMG! You remember the Battlezone game? First person 3D strategy.
Was frigging awesome.
I
think I remember PC Battlezone (different from the Battlezone arcade game which was itself awesome) on my PII, but in 1998 Armour Command also came out and that took up a lot of LAN time. Of course, Baldur's Gate released in 1998 also and
that was pretty much what we all played for the next year or so. Things get fuzzy after that as there was a lot of work and I ended up moving to another country not that long after.
What that reminds me of is how gaming companies have somehow managed to make the multiplayer experience consistently worse over the years, how much fun we used to have at actual LAN parties*, and how Arena Commander is really shaping up to be the BDSSE and you should really buy an Idris.
* I can still remember the smell of those Madge Token Ring 16Mbps cards and a MAU that simply refused to stop beaconing until it was reset with no cables attached at all, and it used to clash with the Wingate server providing 56kbps interwebz shared between all clients until the second reset.
