Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The server meshing test was a "success" the same way SpaceX Starship launches are a success. Same confidence scam.
SpaceX launches are...destructive testing. Launch one, see what goes wrong, address the issues, launch second one, see what goes wrong THIS time, rinse and repeat. Kind of expensive, but fast way. Another approach is to have gazillions of simulations and studies of every part, spend 20 years doing it, and after all that you still might have faulty launch vehicle. As best test is real one...

Haha, spot on with the "having potential and not being good enough". I think it was on the early Starfield thread when I wrote "This has potential" is never a compliment, but rather a negative thing. But that sentence just is so much better on point.

Potential itself isn't a bad thing, not fulfilling it is. We're a long way from mini masterpieces being loaded from tape into 64k and while there is good reason to expect games to be released complete where appropriate to this day and in the future, I think ongoing development, like we're seeing in Elite vs yearly iteration like FIFA is equally good where appropriate also. Let's not chuck the baby out with the bathwater because CIG have successfully monetized the dream without delivering the goods, or is what we're seeing with the state of the current gaming market a reaction to what CIG have gotten away with thus far? If so, maybe dealing with the root cause is the solution to the problem. Blaming the amorphous notion of 'potential' looks like a major cop out and distraction.

Hot Gossip:

Had some more chats with our friendly neighbourhood CIG dev.

Here are some juicy bits. Savour or discard as you will :)

  • CIG recently announced internally that they are freezing raises, promotions and bonuses, and limiting new hires, for a year.
  • The SC 1.0 plan is considered unachievable by everyone they know.
  • Their first impression was: It looked like early planning for a whole new game, with 2 years to deliver.
  • They confirm that the deadline is 2025.
  • It is still just a fraction of what has been publicly announced for SC.
  • The proposed SC 1.0 campaign is supposed to be 30 hours long, with 150 missions.
  • 1.0 is supposed to be like an updated WoW with an SC flavour: A campaign, dungeons, raids, guilds, a player economy etc
  • The ship list is still unclear. Not all concepts will be released, or to gold standard, that much is known.
  • Communication between management and devs is increasingly firewalled.
  • It has never been great though. Devs learn what other teams are doing from the internet more than internal communication.
  • Roberts got particularly annoyed at some ship leaks.
  • Devs often don't know when their code is going to ship. Sometimes they learn for the first time when it appears in the PTU.
  • The engine requires a lot of maintenance. Dozens of issues a day, minimum, have led to a massive rolling backlog over recent years.
  • New hires who have trouble fixing anything promptly leave again.
