Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Who needs full screen and different resolutions anyway? It's more immersive when it's windowed or squished.

Some bad news for Citcon to bury?

Removed from Rentals: Origin 135c, Origin 315p, RSI Aurora CL, Crusader C1 Spirit, Anvil Carrack, Drake Caterpillar, RSI Constellation Taurus, Drake Corsair, MISC Hull A, Crusader Mercury, C.O. Nomad, ARGO RAFT, ARGO SRV and Gatac Syulen

'CIG: Please expand rental options instead of taking them away'

Although some convinced it's just incompetence...

That's got to be a bug, they only just added them for hauling missions and all the costs were bumped

Meanwhile, my uncle's school of dev gossip has opened its doors again...

Hmmm... why would imminent release result in more testers being hired? You want those testers throughout the process, and on top, they've got a ton of unpaid (or perhaps better to say paying) testers.

Especially in the UK, where employment laws means you can't just hire and fire people at will, except as contractors.

I'm pretty sure I saw Mike raging about CIG being a "clown show" earlier.

And the con hasn't even started yet! Happy days.

Don't let me down Chris. I'm looking for the full experience this year, full demo crashes, death by ramp, and of course the wheels literally coming off the vehicle. Wait, that was almost a decade ago.

Borderless window with no exclusive full screen mode in any resolution is the standard display mode for consoles...oh dear, the irony weighs heavy on that statement  ... although the full screen option is usually added for subsequent PC ports (as well as other PC centric graphics settings), but not always...

The Last of Us part one, purely as an example, runs exclusively in borderless windowed mode on PC with no option for exclusive full screen (which is why it ran like crap and took 6 months of optimisation patches to get it to run acceptably after it was first released on PC)...a few other PlayStation to PC ports are the same...largely depending on who does the port. Nixxes are pretty good at what they do and usually add a ton of the PC centric graphics options and optimisations. They're responsible for the likes of Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima PS to PC ports amongst others :)

However, some games just don't like borderless windowed mode, running at ridiculously low FPS with massive stuttering...looking at you Avatar : Frontiers of Pandora... I couldn't get that game to run without stuttering on my fairly beefy PC at all...until in desperation and after days of raking around bug reports, help forums and trying everything else, I switched to exclusive full screen just to try...it runs at a buttery smooth and ray traced 150+fps now.

Borderless window is a handy mode if you run multiple displays for an extended desktop. Alt-tabbing, which in exclusive full screen mode, forces the game window to minimise to the task bar on the primary monitor just to free up your mouse pointer to go type something in Discord running on the secondary monitor.

As an aside, I've always run star citizen in a native 165Hz 1440p borderless window mode for that reason. Alt-tabbing just frees up the mouse but keeps the game running full screen on my main monitor, it's certainly never made any difference... frame rates wise... when I've tested it against exclusive full screen. 🤷‍♂️

The 166fps recorded below is solely due to the frame generation on my AMD card...if I turn it off, game native frame rates @1440p are roughly half that, which for my hardware is kinda shyte...considering It can quite happily bimble along in CP2077 at a native (no upscaling) 1440p, 120fps with full raytracing and no frame generation. Star citizen is far worse if I switch to Ci~G's amateur hour effort at Vulkan...we're talking 40-60fps maximum here without the frame generation to help it lurch drunkenly between frames.

Note the system RAM being hoovered up by the BDSSE in the screenie below...and I don't monitor the VRAM usage it's leeching alongside that since I've got 24Gb of it and hardly likely to run out. Who said you'll never need more than 32Gb of system RAM for gaming? Welcome to the world of star citizen, never been done before :)
