Star Citizen: Alt F4 to play
All that cig have to do next, is hide an auto crash/restart in the system transit loader! Just takes a couple more minutes in quantum travel!
.. And if the servers reboot everytime someone uses it, then that’ll sort the server mashing issues too! Sorted!
Ed, too many exclamation marks sorry
Ed Ed : hmm, they may need to add other places though too, like an auto crash:reload when you call a lift

An apparent game dev has bobbled into the SA thread with some anecdotes:

Hello thread, first time, long time.

I work (well okay I'm currently unemployed like half the industry) in games, so sometimes I see things on LinkedIn and I was wondering if I should buy an Idris after seeing that CIGs Lead Server Engineer is looking a new job.

I have been following this thread since at least 2018? I forget, reading about CIG helped me get through a pretty awful death march at a past job! Also speaking of past jobs, I actually once interviewed at CIG for a job... a decade ago. As rough as things have been for me at times, I am still grateful to have dodged that bullet.

Knowing myself I would not have lasted long enough. I would've quit or been fired within a year. It's funny, I used to go to the local developer drink meetups and you'd almost never run into someone who worked for CIG more than once, with like two exceptions I can recall and one of those two eventually got a job at Naughty Dog which in a lot of ways is kind of a lateral move these days...

There was one of these meetups either the same day or same week as a mass firing/quitting, I think what is referred to as Sandy Gate. It might be the only time I've seen so many people in the industry be happy to not have jobs. They have the look people normally have when they shipped something. I don't remember much else from that night except one producer telling me that CIG might have something shippable in a few years if they just stuck to the new schedule. The schedule was of course revised within a week of the conversation.

LA based by the sound of it.

(Not sure when 'Sandi Gate' was, but I'm guessing that'd be around the Escapist era, when some Community Team guys got the boot too etc)

Off topic again...Had an email from Virpil customer support yesterday:

As you may be aware, we were significantly impacted by the DHL cargo plane crash in Lithuania at the end of 2024, which resulted in the destruction of many of our components.
We're back on track now – we've received new components, hired additional staff to help manage the workload, opening new production lines and are working hard to process orders as quickly as possible. We are a pretty small manufacturer manually assembling the devices here at our manufacturing plant in the EU (no mass production) to ensure that the gear meets & exceeds the expectations once delivered. Based on our current production capacity and your order's position in the queue, we estimate that your order ending #^^^^ will be fully allocated around early-April, while the order ending #^^^^ is estimated to be fully allocated around early-March. Once that's done, we'll dispatch them to you as soon as possible. Please note that, due to high demand and potential adjustments to the production schedule or logistics delays, this timeline may be subject to slight changes.

We truly appreciate your patience and understanding!

I had no idea about the DHL plane crash...nice of Virpil to let me know about the delay in back orders though, proper customer support I say :)

The second order (due in March) was for branded dust covers to keep the biscuit crumbs out of the new toys...

Those dust covers look very nice - my considerably cheaper t16000m flight pack has a woolly hat over the joystick and a custom-folded-bit-of-card™ blocking the throttle slot when not in use 😁

Aye, my VKB Gladiator stick has an old black woolly sock pulled over it when I'm not using it...but I managed to 3D print some reasonably pleasing clip-on covers for the throttle slots on the Warthog :D

Here's a derail in honour of 2019's $725 Nautilus :)

A fun overview of magnetic mines during WW2...

(He's a bit off on the cause and effect regarding the ship hulls though. Here's some swift myth debunking from the son of a UK sci who worked on countermeasures. And some fun detail and anecdotes in this biography of the sci himself. Including stealthy prototyping on boat ponds, and Top Secret letters saying 'Stop this right now, it can't possibly work.' ;))
