Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

A highly relevant to SC video about Chronicles of Elyria. It raised $8M. It never released. The company blamed delays on "building a company", trouble hiring the people they needed for the "revolutionary tech" they had planned, core tech worked on then abandoned until eventually updates became less and less frequent until they stopped publishing a roadmap for a release anymore. There is now a class action lawsuit on the way from backers.

Sound familiar? I know Elyria has been mentioned here before, but the parallels with SC really are quite jarring.

About 30K I should be lucky because I haven't got one since 3.17 release. As usual, you are very competent to collect what you want to collect but your are unable to see by yourself what the real state of the alpha is.

I am terribly sorry that you were wrong about 30ks only getting betterer and betterer.

I am glad that everything is betterer and betterer in your world though. That is good to hear.

The original? Had PC version too, right. I only member a long bridge to drive a car over. I guess I didnt really connect with.
I think I particilarly resonated with the SShock 1 theme. It was electroic music in the pure sense but had the drive I fancy with music.
It took nearly 5 years post release for Halo (renamed as Halo:Combat Evolved) to appear on PC...Halo was the original Xbox exclusive release title in 2001. Saying that, I was on the Halo PC multiplayer beta program in 1998 leading up to Bungie pulling it and ceasing all testing amidst a fog of secrecy....we didn't find out why until the original Xbox was announced with Halo as the release title.

Halo didn't have any form of multiplayer except split screen co-op added until Halo 2 and the Xbox 360....since the original Xbox didn't have an internal network or LAN card. Xbox live and internet connectivity for the Xbox was a distant dream at that time...spilt screen only multiplayer games for us early console peasants back then :)

So 30K, that's not 30,000 crashes I take it. Is it some sort of error code like Pink Sidewinder?
It's kinda like 30,000 crashes...but the term 30k comes from the server error code that pops up on screen when the Star Citizen servers take a dump. You can tell how common and frequent the error is due to the fact it has a nickname that's even known outside of the SC community and has become a Star Citizen meme inside of it :)

Wow, only 3 known issues? Must be close to leave alpha then...
It's just a silly bit of PvE/PvP FPS pew centred on Orison around the various floating platforms. Ci¬G dreamed it up after realising that Xenothreat 9.55.2 or Jumptown 3.2 would go down like a lead balloon had they regurgitated them once again...even for a freefly. No doubt thrashing it through evocati now, it's set for the free-fly coming with Invictus 9.55.2 :)

Genuinely been playing for a fair bit now, haven't encountered an error like this.

Dont get me wrong, I get other issues every now and again, but its why I get perplexed at the assertions this is something that's a common occurance.

The 30k's kinda went away during the 3.15/3.16 cycle...but they were a common bane before then...certain live patches were worse than others. They're not client side either so there's not a lot you can do to either predict, prevent or lessen them. Even if you server hopped regularly as you sensed the server you were on getting 'tired', if the servers decided to crap out, they did...and with great regularity during some live patches. Usually, by the second hotfix in a live patch cycle, they've almost been eradicated or happen a lot less frequently at least.

Since 3.17 dropped, I haven't had any either...but they're certainly back. Over the years I've suffered enough of them for it to be of note...less than some folks, more than others. It all depends on how frequently and for how long you play for. I've had instances where I've had 4 or 5 30k's during one session, even jumping to a fresh server only to be hit almost immediately by another 30k before I've given up...but they're certainly a reality and they're purely server side crashes, not client related like I mentioned... Only sheer luck guarantees you 30k immunity :)

SC has 30k at each patch, nothing new. But when SC players talk about the "30k period" it was when, for months, everyone had 30k at least once every 2 hours.
3.17 has perhaps slighty more 30k than 3.16 (due perhaps to the new entity graph being deployed), but it's absolutely not something similar to the "30k period" you were referencing.

I’ve never referenced any particular peak period. I just suggested that the networking changes scheduled for this year were bound to throw a wrench in the works, and see an uptick in 30ks ¯\(ツ)/¯

It’s really not that outrageous a prediction.

And it’s why I’m not surprised to see guys saying stuff like: "I have experienced more 30k than in the whole time I played 3.15/3.16." / "More 30k this week than I have since 3.15 dropped" etc.

And I’ll be even less surprised if server instability were to get properly worse when the larger networking changes occur. (IE 'static server meshing'). This is all just the prelude ;)

You’ve made it clear that you don’t like this hypothesis. Seemingly because it clashes with your preferred "less and less bugs quarter after quarter" belief.

Well I guess we’ll see who’s right ;)

I’m sure CIG can fix the ammo exploit in time for that.

But it’s gonna be some classic carnage if they can’t ;)

The original Halo on the Xbox did the dynamic music to perfection...so much so, I can still remember it. The Library and the first contact with the flood is forever marked as one of my greatest moments of gaming

I must have gone through those moments no less than four or five times now, both in the original and the remaster, and they keep being some of the greatest moments. Halo has just that undefined thing that makes it work that good.

Stop making me want to buy X4! I have too much in my Steam queue backlog as it is! ;)

Stop not wanting to buy X4! ;)
(But seriously though, not for everyone's tastes, but it's a special game with its special moments. I think everyone should try to find the time to try Elite, SC, NMS and X4 at least once, they all have their good reasons to be. And graphics can be good! :D)

No, I don't think they've tried to. That's part of the problem. Chris Roberts is far too focused on making his visual spectacle that he hasn't even invested the necessary pre-development work on figuring out how what he wants to accomplish can be done... or even if it can be done.

Nope, I don't think they've given it their best shot.

Their best shot would've been doing the necessary prototyping and testing before taking people's money, and adjusting their ambitions according to those results. And no, a machinima video made by other people does not qualify as a pre-Alpha "prototype," no matter how much Chris Roberts pretended otherwise, during his Kickstarter campaign.

Their best shot would've been developing their core game loops and technologies before hiring hundreds of artists to flesh out their universe. Lets not even get into paying for A-List Actors (most of them not even professional voice actors) to do mocap in their custom made motion capture studio of all things. Doing the latter first is why most of what Chris Roberts had captured has become unusable, and needed to be redone... at the very expensive UK-based Imaginarium, rather than at a mocap studio in LA where Chris Roberts, CIG's primary development studio, and the actors he'd hired all lived. Which doesn't make a lot of sense in hindsight, considering how much money Chris Roberts spent on making his own mocap studio in the first place.

(Oh, right... Chris Roberts was living out his rockstar Hollywood Director fantasies with other people's money again.)

So no, I don't think they've given it their best shot. What they've done is, as you said:

Making Chris Roberts' "dream game" became a tertiary concern once he realized how much money was rolling in by selling concepts, rather than a released game.

I suppose I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. So noble :)

Wait, you're describing your best shot, not theirs. But as you suggest, their best shot may have been going for happy hour, getting loaded, realizing they've bitten off more than they can chew, and then recovery.

To clarify a bit, I mean that, currently, noone could really make SC work as they want it to. That's why I see it as a scam. My prediction, for a few years from now, is right after the release of ED2 (or whatever the next iteration of Elite is called) using the Mamba engine (or whatever they call their next iteration of their engine), CIG will magically also be able to complete 1 or more systems...i.e. they'll have to wait till they can copy someone elses work, to have a chance.

But, yes, once that sweet dough started rolling in, I mean...I hope no company gets that sort of distraction. If folks started giving anyone thousands of dollars for pictures, they'd start focussing on making awesome pictures too, no?
