State of Game after 4 years, multiplay is a Nightmare

I'll never dispute there are things in ED that are really annoying but I can say that about probably every game I have ever played.

For example FO4 was a buggy mess with the same Smeg that has been around since FO3 but you learn to overlook it because in FO games they don't even bother fixing them.

ED is a work in progress and always has been.

progress... very slow progress...

Face it, this game will never ever reach the quality level you expect, because it can't. Most of it's core problems are rooted at the very foundation, the networking model, the instancing, the very basic gears that make it all work. Short of practically rewriting the game from scratch there is nothing FD can do about it all.

+Rep.

I did that this weekend, "faced it". That's why ED is going back on an external drive and Subnautica (just came out on PS4) will be taking its place on the SSD.

One can only imagine the salt levels in this ridiculously salty forum if Fdev had postponed the release into 2019, for no obvious benefit other than ... what, some bug fixes that will arrive this month?

Game would have been DOOMED again.

And now it's DOOMED because it wasn't.

I do get that people have had different experiences with the update and for some any bugs have just been a bit of a stall in gameplay.

From my point of view, I'm hoping the next update allows me to go as far as playing the game again as, silly me, I docked on a megaship and logged out, so now I can't get as far as the spinning ship loading screen without the game crashing. With the DW2 issues I'm not getting back in soon with an unrelated problem.

I'm not the only one with this problem, so for us there would have been an obvious benefit.

But unfortunately yes, some will always say the game is doomed whatever Frontier do. Personally I think it is as doomed as any product that could be ruined by bad decisions in future (i.e. everything). It would be nice to play the game again though.

Dude, you seriously made me laugh out loud right there! Today was my first day playing ED in over six months, as I've been doing other things lately, and my experience was very bitter sweet. I did have a LOT of fun seeing all my old friends at the DWE Beacon in Open, but it was seriously marred by horrendous performance issues that finally made the game unplayable.

Glad to give the gift of mirth! +Respect because I know we butt heads regulaly around here.

Game's just generally broken. I was excited about the BGS changes and the codex. But the BGS doesn't work (at all), and the codex doesn't work (audio logs don't get saved), and Frontier don't acknowledge the problems or respond to bug reports. So I quit and have uninstalled the game until those issues are both fixed.

I invested quite a few hours after the update hit in the hopes of getting my name in the Codex for something cool (that time equally split between traveling to a new sector and then finding aforementioned cool thing). Imagine my dismay when my "awesome discovery" was that the Codex is broken. :(

At least I did get my name in the records, for some incredibly boring geological something or another....

I am trying to understand why they are unable to fix all existing elements of the game. Some of the bugs are present for years, those are not game breaking but really annoying like NPC ships taking your landing spot.

FD can really make some things nice when they want - new mining I am looking at you... but for some reason they either don't know how to fix current issues or they do not want to spend resources on it.

That had been their problem from day one. Once their roadmap completely fell apart with bugs left in their wake... it just seemed a trend that would not be going anywhere any time soon. Feels like they are working with a skeleton crew at times. I think a lot of us are hoping for a NMS level comeback. I think that would take a management change, imo.

I like what they've done with the lighting and mining. Came back for that, then got a samsung odyssey plus and.... wow. Extends the gameplay for certain, but eventually I'll hit that lack of content wall again.

I like the game very mutch, its time to put some love in bug fixes and quality ship design(no past and copy) + and a meaningfull credit sink for us billionairs (aka. Fleet Carrier), Minigames never pushed the livecycle of any software product (new system most parts are better).

And first of all CLEAR Communication no vague amazing soon things..

what do you think guys.

Today we have server isues if a view people are online the same time compared to the whole sales.
Should it be posible that 25% minimum of the sales can be online the same time.
Bug counts are amazing, crashing is amazing high, it´s kind the end of the line. Communication about bug fixing almost not existing

There is amazing work in parts of the game, but what is it worth if you can´t play it.

The four issues Frontier have are:

1. Content - which they are clearly working on.

2. Playability - at which they have a patchy record, with a strong tendency to hair shirt solutions and a less than stellar [sorry] record on making things fun to do.

3. Limiting bugs - at which they are not very successful, since they introduce new ones faster than they can fix existing ones.

4. Communication - at which they are atrocious, and have become worse recently.

They really need to get someone who can actively communicate to the user base what problems they are up against and how they are solving them. The user loyalty to the game is fantastic, but instead of using it as leverage, Frontier has consistently failed to get out there and respond, which will eventually take its toll. There are a number of rivals out there and eventually they will profit from the situation just by being better at doing the four things above.

Communication is the real biggie, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why in this day and age, Frontier haven’t clicked that they need to do it.

They are very like Ferrari in Formula One - who possibly had the best car on the track, but lost the championship because of poor internal working at the team, and god awful communication. And Ferrari are way, way better than Frontier.

As we know by now, FD fixed the server dropouts after the first DW2 european launch overload where the American launch went pretty well without a hitch which I witnessed and it was a nice sight to behold.

Nice article by Polygon on the launch crash challenge, but overall most were still optimistic about DW2 and activity continued unabated after the fixes:

"they did hold up for the next two launches later that day."

Just look at my signature. Despite enjoying the new exploration tools, I'm moving ED to an external drive to make room for some new games I just ordered (on disc) that should arrive later this week. I think I've finally reached "stage 5" of accepting the reality that this game will never be fixed properly. If it is, well then I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thankfully I am very hopeful regarding the game Starfield that aims to be a "better Elite" than ED is :D

I need to check if I have taken my meds, today...

I'm finally enjoying this game. Before the latest patch I barely played in almost 2 years. The game is finally getting good. I really enjoy mining.

Hey, you're in the codex? Will have a look out for you next time.

Personally i first mapped a little empire for myself in imperial fringe space and a few systems up top. In the first day of mapping, it immediately hit that going for systems with no discovered tags was the real target, and after frontier decided to clean up the honking mess by not showing discovered anymore this made a whole bunch of systems also eligible. Also it was required to get every tag in the system for the most part. Think i got 27 systems in the end.

I think the most tragic thing about is since frontier has made every mission board pretty much the same the mechanical benefits of having an empire are flat out zero. I guess having some hotspots to your name are nice, there was at least one or two void opals in the bunch. I mean it would have been nice to have a reason to go back to them....

Yeah the pristine systems are mostly gone now its just mopping up for those inclined.

The game keep getting better. Server crash on release was a bit annoying, but such is life. I went and did something productive instead.

Looking forward to chapter 4.

It's kind of like this - if you hate the food at a particular restaurant, why would you keep going there?
it's handy info for the owner if he's wondering why people walk past and look in, then keep walking. or why some seated customers get up and leave halfway through a meal and don't return. valid feedback is always useful. many of us are still here because of what the game once was but is no longer**, or what it could be but isn't yet.

it's ironic that in the beginning i bought into ED as it was able to run over - i quote, "spotty internet connections" - then as features were added, the available overhead gradually reduced until "spotty" would no longer cut it, so i had to leave the game for a while... and now that my internet is 8x faster, here we are with network issues still. i'm usually in Solo lately, so large instances has nothing to do with it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

my major issue with ED though, is what i get in return for my time spent, vs. what i used to get for the same type of operation a couple of years ago**

good old days:
select a few 'kill pirates' missions. no need to spend very long stacking missions, there were plenty on the boards, and when i returned there'd be more waiting.
go out to find and kill any 72 pirates, wherever they may be found (even in the same system that gave you the mission!)
return an hour or two later with 72 kills. that was fun! let's go out again. and maybe once more after that.

current day:
allocate a few hours to try and build a worthwhile stack for pirates specifically of Faction X in specific System Y - they are rare on the boards, but for the time needed to execute (see below) it's just not worth it for a mere one or two missions. so - build a decent stack.
head out to System Y and sit there waiting for Pirates X to appear.
5 hours later and i only have 42 of my required 72 faction X kills, and i'm starting to get nervous... and frustrated too - i have to ignore juicy targets from other factions A, B and C, just in case my faction X guy turns up while i'm engaged or recovering.
another 5 hours more and yay, i have completed the 72 kills. return to base and hand them in, then quit. the entire thing from start to end can frequently be longer than 12 hours game-time. i've had it take longer than 24 hours a few times.
load up game next day, ponder whether i want to go through all that again... decide not to, instead do one or two small trades in the Python then quit.

i get it, really i do. i understand i can no longer play the game like i once did. so i don't.

I am nearing the last stage of your signature. Our of my 25 real life friends who played I am the only one who still logs in occasionally. But Elite has lost its luster, not saying I never got my monies worth, after thousands of hours in game since Alpha I am happy, but it is nearly that time to "move on" to something new. Elite's development seems to of lost its way somewhat, hopefully will find its way back on path in the future. And its still better than that "other other space game" we shall not mention here.
