News Steam keys update

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
Having backed the game on KS and got my copy sitting in the store still to be downloaded. ( still got my 2004 PC) When I get my new high end rig later this year it will be great to have it on steam. I take it anyone who has the game in the FD store will be told how to get the key working?

So does it cost something to FD if I request a Steam key for my copy of Elite? How about for DLC/skins I purchase in the future? A significant portion of revenue will go to Valve for copies bought from Steam, sure, but hopefully not for copies purchased from FD store.

I'm a Premium Beta backer; getting the game to Steam would be nice but I'd rather see every penny I pay to go to FD, hopefully to finance a lot more ED content :)

It must cost FD something, go back and read the OP, there is a message there from an official FD insider that they make more money if you buy from the FD store rather than through steam, it couldn't be any plainer.

I dont believe it does cost FD to produce a key...Valve take a percentage of the cost IF you purchase Elite Dangerous from Steam rather than directly from Frontier Developments themselves, thats how i read it.If thats the case then really anybody who has purchased from here and not Steam has already given FD more than Steam purchasers.

Hi everyone,

Some breaking news for you:

We’ll soon be offering Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from the EliteDangerous.com store who would like a key, and to anyone who buys the game from our store in the future.

We always appreciate it when you buy direct from our store because it means we can put more into supporting and developing Elite: Dangerous, but we know a number of long-time players and backers like to play through Steam and we think it’s fair everyone has that option, not just new players.

Elite: Dangerous runs on Frontier’s servers, so we’ve been working with Valve to give you a way to seamlessly connect your Steam and existing Frontier accounts in a way that’s easy. It’s coming soon. From May 28 you’ll be able to generate a Steam key from your account page, and we’ll have full instructions right here on the forums closer to the time.

The team really has been working hard on this one, and we’re all super happy to finally have an answer for you. Thanks for bearing with us and thanks for playing, as always.

Edit: This applies to Kickstarter backers, too.

Awesome ! TY :)

According to the moaners, it won't cost Frontier anything. I have my doubts though.

From the OP: 'The team really has been working hard on this one...'

Staff time and time is money remember. Either way, effort that would have been better spent in another direction, imo.

Why are you complaining about this topic? Clearly you aren't interested in a Steam key. More to the point, why are you trying to muscle in on what their time and money is spent on? If it was financially/logistically impracticable then it wouldn't have happened.

This topic isn't for people who aren't interested in a Steam key.

We could continue bickering about the if ands or buts about if this took time from development, OR we could thank Frontier for giving us the opportunity to choose which we prefer and move on. The matter has past and arguing over an issue that has past does nothing except waste time (time constantly being mentioned could be better spent on the game...). I for one will use the steam key and am appreciative to have the choice to use it. Thank you Frontier for giving me the opportunity, I will be sure to write a Steam review!

Hopefully creating keys for existing users doesn't cost FD. Hopefully Valve look at it as perhaps adding more users onto their Steam platform and thus potentially creating extra sales in the longer term which offsets any, and probably minimal extra 'cost' from their point of view.

Buying new stuff through the Steam store rather than FD's does cost FD though as Valve will take a slice of the payment. *BUT* I guess there will also be users who might buy a skin via Steam who perhaps would not have gone to the FD store otherwise to do so... younger players who don't have credit cards etc... so, hopefully it's swings and roundabouts and good for everyone :)

Bottom line - keep buying through FD's own store to maximise your support to the game!

Thankyou FD...very good decision and muchly appreciated :)

As for the (unknown) cost of providing keys, I doubt it has cost FD a significant amount.
Even if it has cost them some money, they would have decided that the benefit of providing keys outweighs the cost involved (a fairly straight forward decision for any business worth it's salt).

I understand why people buying direct from FD is favorable in term of funds being used towards the future development of the game, but some of the comments here are downright silly.
As a kickstarter backer, does that make me a less 'loyal' customer simply because Kickstarter takes a cut of the final pledge total (which could have been used for development)?

Well I didn't feel like I needed a steam key and likely won't use it (the ED icon on my desktop works perfectly well :p ) but thanks anyway.
