Newcomer / Intro Stupid question about data

Hi everyone. Can I ask a silly noob question about data?

Is it inherently a whole lot more difficult to accumulate it than raw and manufactured materials? Or is there some reliable way of getting data (particularly rarer forms) other than pointing a wake scanner and hoping for the best?

What do you all do to accumulate data?

I go to the crashed Anaconda at HIP 16613, planet 1 a, at -11.0093, -95.6755.

There are 3 data points and 3 cargo racks with high level data and raws respectively.

There's also a nice bit of scenery I won't spoil for you.

I got an A grade wake scanner with fast scan engineering, then scan 1 wake as I leave each station.
Takes virtually 0 time out of my game and you quickly have loads without noticing. No grind or relogging required

Definitely this ^^^

That and just targetting ships that casually wander into your field of view will eventually yield a whole load of data items, just through casual space-trucking if you do it on every trip. Took me ages to work this out, and then only after someone had told me, though. :)

The G5 data items are harder to come by, but RNGesus does smile on you occasionally. And there is always Jameson's Cobra and the crashed Anaconda if you want a trip!

I prefer the range modification - G3 gives +72% and so at Distro Centres I don't have to move to scan all the wakes and you don't need to unlock Tiana for that grade.

It all depends on play style, I suppose. For me, I've got bucketloads of data, mostly from scanning ships (usually just the pirates that attack me). Manufactured mats, again plenty, and mostly scooped from the debris of the aforementioned pirates. Raw mats, on the other hand, are only obtainable from either SRV driving or asteroid mining, neither of which I have done much of lately (they don't give them out as mission rewards any more), so my raw mats supplies are pretty much empty right now.

Another thing you should consider is the material trader, especially when you are pulling your hair trying to find encoded mats for engineering.
You can trade some of the more commonly collected data from scans for the rarer ones that the trader has.
The ratio is often 36/1 but sometimes you have something they want and will give 6/1 or even 2/1 ratio on the trade.

I know I've said it before but it's a shame there isn't a Dav's hope equivalent for data. I'll never get those G5 drives at this rate :D

Also - scanning the comms links at Jameson's Cobra or the Bug Killer crashed anaconda gives out loads of G5 encoded stuff - trade for others.

Base running of M2M surface installations produces lots of MEF and other stuff, just a 3 data-point scan in a quick flat route, relog to max out on stuff.

Like they said, distribution centers in famine systems are a good way to get data by scanning all the traffic with a (long range) wake scanner. If you have no problem murdering innocent NPCs, look for a system that's also an anarchy and alternate between scanning wakes and looting the T9s there for manufactured materials.

Another way to get data is to look for missions with high payout, often one of the reward options is data from the "encoded firmware" category, so you can earn lots of MEF and trade those for other data at a material trader.

Agree with all the suggestions - also Planetary Scan Missions give data - and they're quick to complete if you scan from the ship. Also they tend to have more mats as rewards (especially once allied).

Is this question just about wake scan data? This is only one type of data so you will not get anything other than wake scan data from wake scans. Scanning ships in super cruise is another free source of data that you can do with no interruption to your normal game. Data can also be earned as mission rewards, at USSs, crash sites, etc. Lots of ways but most ways only generate only a particular sub-set of the available data types.

yep the scenery there is fantastic... especially in VR, just you spend more time looking at it than collecting the mats :)
