#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Dear Frontier.

Your game isn't even close to being populated with enough information and functionality to be enjoyable at the moment. The continued (voluntary) efforts of these third parties are critical to the success of Elite Dangerous until such time as you provide equal or better functionality in-game.

Please take heed of their requests, it is in everyone's interests that you and they come to an agreement.

Thank you.

As a fellow developer who has on occasion wanted to develop a third-party tool which integrated with Elite, but threw up my arms in frustration at the lack of support and documentation, you third-party devs are doing a great service to the community and we all deserve a better, supported, stable, documented API from Frontier if they’re not going to implement the functionality themselves.

Imagine all the amazing tools that don’t exist because it’s too frustrating to develop them for Elite.

I don't support blackmailing FDev this way[1].

[1]: Throwing a tantrum like a toddler until you get your goodies.

Spending hours to write code for free that thousands of people use for someone else's poorly written game gives them the right to do what they want with the websites and IP they own for it. It's hardly throwing a tantrum - why should they work for free and not get the help they want?

Baffling development decisions and hopeless stakeholder communication from FDev? Well I never, this is a truly unprecedented turn of events.

Good luck with your strike OP.

The way i see it is that the API works (barring bugs introduced via patches which FD fix), and its basically these guys have got together and said "We want more, FD aren't giving, let's have a wobbly over it"

Yeah, well, i want more. I want more exploration features, i want better in-game tools, i want some changes to how PvE piracy works, i want, I WANT, I WANT..... but FD are not going to give me what I want just because i stamp my feet over it.

As much as I love the guys who make these tools, they are acting like prima-donnas here.

They can damn well get in line with the rest of us who WANT things

Guessing this is firmly with your mod had off ?

Sadly, I still can't add some of the blue names to /ignore ... guess I might have to find a 3rd party tool for it ;)

By rights these sites should not need to exist if Fdev spread info in a competent manner. But they don't so they do.

So fdev either do the work themselves and make info better in game...

Or give into their demands before people start realizing how much it actually sucks in game from your end. Example. I want to know what I need for mods I need to fly there just to look at the list...get bent. Unnecessarily Inconvenient. Sums it up nicely.

Stop learning every lesson in this game the hard way.

Hi everyone. Just letting you know we've seen the thread. Please be patient while we bring this to the attention of the developers.

Just quickly want to mention that we always try to communicate as openly and effectively with our community as possible, and we appreciate all the hard work that goes in to the maintenance of these useful sites and tools.

I have also sent a PM to the OP, too :)

Thanks for your patience everyone!

Do you? Where's the information on the orrery, is it in the plan, is it dead, dying, unthought off? I love the game but the one thing you can't accuse Frontier of is being open with communication. What's in 2.4?
Salty tears but this lack of communication would be grounds for a divorce in any other relationship...
Post not aimed specifically at Ed btw (who's lovely), just at the corporate culture that seems to control fdev.

Uh, totally support you guys also, love EDDB and Inara, hope you get what you want.

The timing couldn't be worse on this, but I'm all for a better API and stuff...

2.3 destroyed my main use of EDDI ('export to coriolis') and I want it back.

That, and possibly other great options like automatic export of stats to Inara and other sites.

Get on it, FDev.

Spending hours to write code for free that thousands of people use for someone else's poorly written game gives them the right to do what they want with the websites and IP they own for it. It's hardly throwing a tantrum - why should they work for free and not get the help they want?

It shows that these people can not be trusted with the responsibility to host and operate their tools without abusing them.
The current action is proof that these sites are abusing their powers in order to blackmail FDev - it's not a nice way at all.

I'm just going to say that the timing of this is obvious, and to be honest, very childish. It is, at best, wasting the time and effort of the playerbase in the event. FDev didnt have to do anything for 3rd party developers at all.

As one of the Admirals coordinating the defense, you've now made my life a living hell, and I will not support 3rd party developers from this point forward.

With me, all this has accomplished is a personal boycott of sites that I once considered useful.

Had you done so at a time where it was less vital to Drew Wagar and more respectful to the amount of time and effort that people who aren't getting paid at all (like myself and literally more than a thousand others) I would be more supportive.

You are stupid , they are doing it now when it hurts because at an easier time noone will listen, but its fine mate you said you won't support 3rd party tools from now on, okay, so when the sites are back up again, you are never going to use them again, you will choose in game methods to the easier less time consuming external versions....okay....if thats true then I'm am 50 feet tall and made of gold. Stop talking out of your rectal cavity...you will start using it again as soon as it is available, you are full of hot air... p1ss and wind..

The game is in near shambles in its present state, they have better things to focus on right now.
Yes, like supporting 3rd party tooling!
And if they think they are the only ones getting snubbed on communication with FDev, they are sadly mistaken.
So, because they treat everyone badly, 3rd part toolers should shut-up?
Before 2.3 Beta dropped, Dale Emasiri contacted many of the big player groups including mine asking us to plan events that were supposed to be put into a schedule and made public, so we could have some epic beta stuff going on. The community department failed to ever actually do it, making the hours of planning and work *we* put into communication with *them* completely useless.
OK, I see a pattern here...
FDev loses nothing with this strike, all its doing right now is angering the people who would otherwise support them and what they do.
So, you are saying it WILL anger people near Fdev? Good, maybe that will help them to listen; maybe finally we have found the one way into FD listening to its users. As far as i am concerned, they are still in the 1984 mode: playing Big Brother and not lstening; this could very well work. I will even support 3rd party toolers more...

Well can they can damn well choose to take their services down if they want to as well.

If you want to have access to their website's services then you'll just have to put all the work in and build your own.

Thank you OP (and other 3rd party devs) for all the work you have done to make mine (and others galactic lives) a lot easier.
Though I quit playing for time being till the frontier sort out the issues. Meanwhile, may I suggest the disgruntled/dissatisfied players to join the wonderful world of DCS? The Su-25T comes free ;)
