#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

FDev should thank the 3rd party developers for enhancing their game for free.

I agree. We have an mmo with less than ideal tools in game. The fact that people out of their own time want to use their skills to help other players is wonderfull. The least Frontier should have is a full time employee to keep those who works for free, happy.

Whilst I support the idea of F D paying more attention to the API and the 3Pdevs, I do think that people logged-in to the sites they have stumped up money in a donation towards should still have access. Just a bit annoyed here, not too bothered but hey-ho it's the internet innit?

As cool as the 3rd person tools are, I can't see the action being very constructive, especially if the OP says the idea of the tools is to support Frontier, as well as the game.

Why not just stay in touch with Howard??

The OP mentions going through Zac but, if it's possible to organise a coordinated shutdown, and if people worried he doesn't appear on forums, did anyone actually PM Howard first?? Surely he'd know why the API doesn't beta, though if you ask me it's probably written during beta, once the build has been locked down, because at the end of the day it is a peripheral to the main game build.

So anyway, no doubt the thread has a life of it's own by now, but my 2c.

ps. sympathetic because obviously the 3rd parties want to give a good service but don't support the action really.

Howard is great, but he's only sporadically available for helping us. What the guys want is some sort of information on what they are doing and what may break the tools all the time.

The irony of this tweet on the ED twitter feed today was not lost on me....

Agree with OP. I thought this was brought up long ago and FD were going to work with them?
I've said all along I'd even pay towards this rather than paint jobs as game extras.
An in-game interface to manage and deal with the data etc would improve the game.

This is a very lame and immature reaction: Everyone in the world knows (or should know!) that the 3rd party tools (or parasites as you so childishly calls them) are made by volunteers and that the "donations" they recieve are always just a fraction of the money they voluntarily(!) spend on it. These are guys and gals that do this for fun, for a hobby, because they love to do this.

How dare you to call them parasites and suggest that they do this just to scrape money of others! You should truly be ashamed of yourself

so they have taken down their sites for fun, for love, and the hobby. not for a paycheck, job ego boost. they havnt stated what it is exactly they want, and support is not an ansew

We have been on at them for a while asking for some basic communication, so we are not surprised and have to scramble when something changes out of the blue. This is not a decision made lightly.
I get it. As third-party developers, you need to know that your time and effort is worth something. You need to know that if you find a bug, or if something changes you have a channel to the developers to query it in reasonable time. You don't currently have that and it needs to change.

What I *don't* get is why I didn't see a post such as the OP outlining all this, with a plea to open a better dialogue with a reasonable timeframe, lest services be removed. You'd have gotten a similar reaction from the community (who are generally behind you) but with a lot less of the acrimony around both the timing and that it's basically zero-notice.

Yes, strikes work. But generally they're given with reasonable notice to allow dialogue to take place and to allow consumers to make alternative arrangements.

There are things in ED that are a real pain. I wonder if I would even bother to play engeneers witout those tools, or do missiones that requires to find good ... Corialis, Inara, EDDB, you have my support and I hope ED will make your life easier.

The bingoneers would be a (even bigger) Hell hole, without Inara.cz. [yesnod]

They could at least keep open a semblance of communication. A heads up that something is going to break or at least some acknowledgement that they impacted something and won't be able to get to it right away.

Just that little bit would go a really long way, I think.

I agree with that Monk, I really do but this is attention grabbing, throwing the baby out with the bath water arrogant and disruptive as possible nonsense.

And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

Cut these third party developers off, without FD giving them any access they are nothing. Fight fire with a NUKE!

I support this initiative. These 3rd party sites are not only useful: they are essential and provide invaluable information. I couldn't do without them.

Maybe you do rely on them. But maybe you shouldn't.

And you certainly don't need to.

Adapt, overcome, evolve, learn.

This thread is actually quite funny and revealing, as I suspect '84'ers' will be wondering what all the fuss is about, whereas the 'young'uns' can't survive without t'intenet*.

Fascinating.... and all part of Ed's cunning social experiment.... or is it Tj????... let's be honest, I've never seem them both in the same room at the same time... ...just saying!!

* Apologies if anyone finds themselves offended by these terms. And if you are, grow up.

be nice if they did, then these parasites would go scrape some other games data for "donations"

Tell me friend, do you use this thing called "The Internet"? It's pretty neat and most of the content and the software supporting it is provided free of charge and survives on donations.

Whilst I support the idea of F D paying more attention to the API and the 3Pdevs, I do think that people logged-in to the sites they have stumped up money in a donation towards should still have access. Just a bit annoyed here, not too bothered but hey-ho it's the internet innit?

People who have donated (myself included) are the mostly likely to make a stink about it. A stink is what they want and a stink has occurred.

A thought just occurred to me, and this may be a result of the fibrous growth that connects my optic nerve to my colon and gives me a s___ty outlook, but hear me out here...

What IF this breakdown in communication is intentional, and the first step toward Frontier deciding to monetize the sort of data these various 3rd party sites have been providing freely, in form of a paid companion app for PC, Android and/or iPhone?

Given the sheer number of people who simply cannot seem to find a way to play without these, it certainly would make financial sense, as they'd HAVE to buy these apps to continue to do the things they've done all along.

Just speculating.

I won't pay for a companion app. I'll pay to have the tools in-game, but only when those tools have been developed and exist, ready for play. I'm done paying for promises.

As the wise man, Lucky Day, once said - "No dough, no show."

I continue to be utterly stunned at the attitude of those people who somehow think these guys are doing something wrong.

'The only people they're hurting is other players'
'The sites are luxury and are not needed. If the site makes any profit, then FDEV sees none of it. '

These two statements pretty much sum up everything that is wrong with the attitude of everyone who somehow sees these as profit-gouging sites, thieving from the pockets of Frontier.

Apart from the fact I have NEVER seen ANY of these sites beg for donations, they never assume they are part of Frontier, they don't abuse any trademark, they certainly don't make profit. It's a ridiculous statement made by ignorant people.

The hypocrisy I see in regards to these people, with INARA signatures, just make me sad for the western human race. How about you guys remove these signatures, just to show your disdain for these people who have done nothing to you, and yet you feel obliged to somehow belittle - as if they owe you something.

This 'community' is getting worse by the day. I feel sorry for those who are able to see and understand the bigger picture, and don't just disagree because they 'can'.

It is a really terrible and scummy way to go about it. I doubt that is the case.

Well that hasn't stopped - any oil company, Microsoft, or countless others from doing these sorts of things.. it only takes one lawyer or shareholder to catch the scent of money....
