Surface Features - Barnacles/Unknown Structures/Crashed Ships etc...

If everybody is saying to ignore the texture bugs and that they mean nothing and that it is a random whatever... well... Look. Could post lot of others where other stuff were found. But whole way clear, clear, clear and then it appears and wreck is 4deg longitude away. They obviously mean nothing.

I've seen black squares on each planet I looked for geysers, all around galaxy, hundreds of planets - how does this fit in your theory? Even if you are for some reason right, then I would not be interested in using it, because that would be the same as measuring your exit time from supercruise when searching for some bases and for me it is to close to cheating. Baton out :)

BTW just got this one:

probably Thargoid motership/Raxxla - diving to check :)

I am usually not moaning about bugs, but those squares are easily the most annoying ones. I'd be curious whether there is something in the Stellar Forge that causes them

Are they maybe caused when the procedural generation knows it has to modify a "patch" with extra non-PG texture material (for a ruin or a crash site or whatever) but isn't close enough to generate the info it needs so it multiplies black (or nothing) on top? So maybe a discrepancy between distances in a couple of formulae somewhere.

Or something. Maybe. Perhaps.

Nah... It'll be full of stars ;-P

Barnacle stats.

Last two weeks , the number of new Allripe Barnacle systems has grown again. Far more than we normally find new systems.
Allripe barnacle systems only seem to be since 18th May 3303
The 18 months before there were only 6 known cyclic barnacle systems. Since we have 19 new allripe barnacle systems in the Pleiades.
Just seems a lot of new barnacles for the last 6 months.

Most recent new systems to be found with barnacles in the last 2 weeks.

HIP 17497
Pleiades Sector SE-P b6-0
Pleiades Sector NN-T c3-15
Pleiades Sector CQ-P b5-0
Pleiades Sector FR-V c2-2

Somebody mentioned somewhere they are using 8 layers deep surface generation. So in my understanding, just before finest details appears, more complex things are inserted (some are proc gen, some hand made). E.g. logging in while on surface - first terrain appears, then assets and big rocks floating in the air, then smallest details. I have sub-optimal laptop and this happens many times to me. IIRC, that texture square issue become prominent at some point after Horizons and before Guardians (EDIT:makes sense - when they started to mix proc gen assests with artist made objects). Here is an old picture from internet, banged my head for a long time why split on the surface.

While away, I came up with a solution for "the paragraph." - Links. Simple links to well established threads about hunting specific features.

Also, JJ-386? Jameson's cobra? 386 like the Intel processor?

Can someone briefly explain if there is old lore around him crashing and going on to do the rest of his work? Was he the guy who delivered the antivirus or just the guy in the first game?

This is actually a tricky question. There is almost no old Lore about John Jameson. We know that JJ's son (the player from FE2) was also named John Jameson. Source: The FE2 manual, the will of Peter Jameson*: https://media.discordapp.net/attach...-11-28_at_7.51.17_PM.png?width=307&height=464) You can see there the will is addressed to J. Jameson Jr.

So, I'm not aware of "john" being mentioned anywhere specifically in old Lore - the first name of the Commander was left open iirc. But putting together the pieces we can see that we have Peter Jameson (unknown, died in 3199 (FE2 manual)*), father of John Jameson (died in 3150 (ED crash site)), grandfather of John Jameson Jr, (pilot in 3200-? (FE2 game)) --- unknown.

I haven't been able to track down a scanned version of the FFE manual to check to see if there's a "will" in that, and what the names say. In the online version (the one that's bundled with modern ports of FFE) it's actually a player-made manual that seems to use the exact same "will" from the FE2 manual - I'd be really interested to see a scanned FFE manual to see if the will is different (or exists at all).

It's definitely worth noting that it's entirely possible that "John Jameson" is Peter Jamesons, brother, uncle, second cousin, clone, Life Model Decoy... - we don't have any real reference other than the "will" in FE2, so take with a massive pinch of salt until it's confirmed one way or the other in ED :)

Was he the guy who delivered the antivirus or just the guy in the first game?

in FFE the "antivirus" was delivered (and not) around 3251 by the player (so 100 years after the JJ Cobra crash site, if we've got our timeline speculations correct) - However this is FFE Lore, we have zero ED info about this event (if it happened). So far, all indications are that John Jameson in ED (the guy in the crash) is supposed to be the "guy from the first game", so the crash would have taken place in 3150, or 3151, which we know was the time when the Thargoids "vanished" according to the Sarasvati logs.

BUT! Most of this is supposition based on piecing together one word or one line or text mentioned in various places, so best to check all sources yourself and see if you can develop a better idea or verify what's there.

*Peter Jameson is also part of ED Lore: "The most coveted was the 'Elite' badge, and the first of these was awarded to Commander Peter Jameson, who wore it on the rear of his Cobra MkIII for the rest of his life." from Tourist Beacon 0245 - Shinrarta Dezhra.

Hey Moribus, I have the FFE manual here in front of me :), what do you want to know? [edit] Oh yea, any wills, well, looking at the index (& from memory) it's basically an instruction manual on how to play the game...... looking in the 'Cmdr profile' now ...... nope, nothing in that section about wills. I don't think their is any story in the manual.
So looking at the FE2 manual I see what you mean, it's starts with the will & testament & then goes onto the instructions, sadly the FFE manual has no story pre-amble :(.

I also have FFE 'Further Stories of Life on the Frontier', which, to my shame I have never read!

Awesome, thanks :) Nice to have that confirmed! I've only ever seen the digital version of that one. So really then Anubite, to answer your question, in old Lore, there isn't any reference to the Jameson lineage except for the "will" in the FE2 manual. There's actually more in ED than any previous game it seems.

I also have FFE 'Further Stories of Life on the Frontier', which, to my shame I have never read!

I read that there's only 4 stories in the book that relate to Elite, the rest are just random sci-fi (for some reason!) The Acrobat in Black, Faust, A Business Proposal and Inevitable Consequences.

Alright, cool. Thanks for the bit of depth there, I didn't know about the will. A nice touch.

It's really hard to juggle new lore, old lore, canon, non-canon, blatant retconns, half retconns, and comments like "look at the lore" from Wagar. I bet this story arc would be a whole lot more exciting to someone naive to it all, exploring about, getting missions to get black boxes from NHSS5s and following the trail of Joci.

Sadly there wasn't enough in-game depth for my noob days, and it's not the best now, but FDev is on the right track I think. I'd love to see a company craft a masterpiece game over at least 10 years, with improving range of graphics quality and without the pitfalls of content creep or massive reversals. If they can do it, I'll give them a medal. Handcrafted, too.

Worth knowing! Thanks :) I'll probably only read those 4 then.

Not sure if this is the right place. But whatever. Went out to look at the Barnacle Forest at Pleiades Sector PN-T b3-0 – Planet A5. https://canonn.science/news/new-barnacle-forest-found/

After driving around and scanning stuff for about 10 min, I logged out, still in my SRV. After logging back after about an hour real time, the Thargoid sounds immediately appeared and an Intercepter buzzed in with a neutralization field. Nothing new in the process, but judging by the color (bright red) it was a Basilisk variant. Did his thing with barnacles and went off. I scanned the wake, nothing special.

Just wanted to share, maybe re-logging helps to trigger the event. Next time I will bring my xeno-hunter FGS and may try to get some AX hits...

If I recall correctly, it's to do with loading/unloading the assets. I also think there's something to do with pinging back to the servers to get a new "chance", which just does nothing if it times out, which sucks for Australians like me with our tin-can internet...

Personally I hate playing the logging game for anything.... collecting meta-alloys, the Ram Tah mission and trying to trigger the Thargoids to appear at a barnacle being the highest annoyances on the list. I just gave up in the end.

EDIT: Not that I have any problem with people doing it, it's just a timewasting, immersion breaking PITA to me :) I do it for some things though.

Isn't 'Genuine Thargoid' an Elite story?
