Switching to Odysee. Maybe...

It may be time for me to take the leap and move on to Odyssey.

No if you have the needed access level and the power is out, all you need to do is to charge it and it will open when you approach. No need to over charge it and to leave it open.
The situation that was described is making a swift run for it after shutting down power, to not run into scavengers. And that is a lot faster when you can just run through permanently open door than having to stop and charge every single one.

Custom engineering upgrades to suits and weapons requires unlocking 10 new engineers in the bubble and 3 in Colonia (if you are there) then requiring collecting materials at planetary bases.
It's 9 in the bubble and 4 in Colonia. Other than that nice summary!

Yes, I just thought I'd mention it for the people that don't know that you don't have to overload every door.

But in the case of nicking the regulator it's useful as the guards/scavengers can't get in there to attack you (atleast if you didn't turn off the authorization checks), and they seem to often gather up in front of one of the doors, so you can take your time, turn on the shields, and run out the door where there aren't any guards..

In my case they arrive by dropship above my scorpion 30 seconds after the power goes down.

Wow! A lot to consider. Thanks to you all. (y)

Here's what I got out of this thread and I may be missing something but...

It appears that if I'm not interested in the walking around on the planet stuff that I might as well just stick with horizons. First off - I don't do FPS. I've dipped my toe in a few times in the 43 years I've been gaming on a PC but it just never did anything for me. That said: My play style is bounty hunting, the occassional assasination mission, harvesting hi-res sites and short to medium range passenger missions. Every now and then I get a wild hair and scoot off on a couple or 3 days seeing how far I can fly out into the galaxy in the wierdest direction I can think of (which might happen once or twice in a real year). Not a big fan of pirates (role play) and if I happen to be in the right ship then I'll kill 'em just because - pirate and I don't give a hoot whether their kids go hungry that night or not.

So - if I'm missing something about Odyssey I'd really appreciate knowing what it is.

So the CZs don't sound like your thing.
The exobiology might be more interesting.
As is driving across dunes under a blue or green sky.
Back with settlements there is a range of missions available from simple delivery runs to espionage.
But mostly I like the blue skies.

You pretty much have it. It's legs (FPS) for Elite. I have more fun in Horizons and really don't do much in Odyssey.

You like bounty hunting and assassinations? Then Odyssey should be for you. Locate, identify, stalk and shoot the target (one shot preferred) and exfiltrate. Build close and long range assassination weapons, something for close range, and something for long. An Executioner with scope and audio masking gives lots of satisfaction in taking down distant targets.

Not that I own such a weapon ....

Exploration in Elite is much more fun since Odyssey, as you got coloured skies and freaky plants, plus all the things you could do before. I myself didn't realize before we started the Paul Vernon Memorial Tour. And walking around in the carrier and meeting fellow CMDRs at the bar is a must anyway. Wouldn't want to miss it. YMMV. 🌻

O7,

If this were a mix of ship and on-foot (AKA the Mandalorian before he became a babysitter), that would be pretty awesome gameplay. Track down a target as he moves from system to system (perhaps by questioning people in the local stations), find his ship on some planet, track him on foot, give him the "I can bring you in warm or I can bring you in cold" speech, collect him one way or the other, load him on your ship, fly to the mission giver, collect bounty. Yep, that might be pretty cool, especially if there was enough variety between different hunts (for example, maybe sometimes he flees in his ship and you have to disable it without destroying it, or tag it with a tracker, etc).

Comes pretty close to what Odyssey has to offer.

Like the Constrictor mission from the first game?

Odyssey just gives you more options to mix up game sessions,
On Foot Assasination missions are satisfying hit and run type affairs different to the more to drawn out ship based combat, I wouldnt put them into the same category as typical FPS shooter. It's the same with other planet side mission types such as looting and sabotage in Odyssey, which relies more on stealth while the game gives you equal chance to just run away and escape, which can be just as thrilling as standing your ground, something I see a lot of comments miss that point when complaining about being out-numbered.

If you enjoy Horizons planet missions then Odyssey Settlements and missions just make more sense, plus the Settlements and Space Stations do feel tangiably that much more alive, I would be tempted to have the Odyssey stuff just even as a back drop to my other more space orientated missions.

There is a definite distinct feeling to being onfoot on a planet surface and on exploration trips getting that first landfall accolade was addictive and I found myself hunting out planets that might have great views, those with atmospheres or moons close to ringed planets etc. So I found myself hanging about in Systems for longer. I just find the added planet types, textures and atmopsheres that extra bit more engrossing.

Oh and the new Scorpion SRV is great for exploring planet terrain.

There have been complaints about farming geo forms in Odyssey as they are no longer a distinct POI but rather more realistically scattered but not persistant. Personally I do not mind this proc-gen compromise however as I enjoy hunting them in the more varied terrain.

It may be time for me to take the leap and move on to Odyssey. But I have a general question before I pull the switch.

I have 9 or 10 - I forget - ships in my fleet. Weapons, shields, FSD, Fuel Scoops and anything else that can be upgraded (except thrusters - not going down that grind road so only grade 3 for them) have been upgraded to grade 5. Took a lot of time and money to get there.

So - if I don't upgrade to Odyssey level engineering standards am I gonna be completely outclassed with my Horizons level stuff. If so how much of a grind is it gonna be to bring my self up to spec (I hate mining, HATE IT)? Not gonna do the guardian stuff regardless but... if I won't be able to compete I may just have to grit my teeth and tackle the task.
Ships stay the same. For legs, with basic gear high end NPC's are major bullet sponges. You want to get at least lvl 3 gear. You don't need any engineers for that, in EDO those ar for adding specials to leg gear. With some of those you become near godlike, but it's a major grind.

Honestly, leg missions are more skill based. If you are really good you can clear a military base with your basic jumpsuit. Upgrades just make it much easier.
