Thargoid Interactions

My idea was that even Thargoid ships must have a limited amount of cargo space. By giving them an enormous amount of something they like, and we know they really do like Meta-Alloy, it might be possible to learn how big their holds are. Also we know if you drop 5 or more units of MA's, they call for another Thargoid ship and I was wondering if maybe they call for more than one buddy when confronted with an amount of 'sweets' that is impossible for one or two of them to consume.

Short version: I tried to overfeed them and see if there is something to be learned.

It took me quite a while to perform this test (dancin' the Palin Grind for a while to earn the necessary creds, flying back to Jameson, refitting the ship, some materials farming and a little rng'neering, returning to the Pleiades and getting enough Meta-Alloys - damn, that stuff is expensive if you buy it).

As you can see in the video, I repeated the test, both times the result was the same: at one point both Thargoids became mad (and red) and attacked. Both times I was careful to keep a safe distance, so there was no obvious reason for them to open fire. It seemed like they ate so much MA, it made them sick and they blamed me for that. I would expect to see this kind of behaviour from a child or maybe an animal (I know dogs do eat more than is good for them), but not from a species that is smart enough to master faster than light space travel. They should be able to understand the consequences of their doing much better than that.

As far as I see, this allows two possible conclusions:

 1. If these ships are indeed piloted by Thargoids, they must be children, or
 2. We do not deal with Thargoids, but with their ships only.

Thargoid technology is organic. If I understand that correctly, that means their 'tools', including their ships are alive, Thargoids do not build things, they breed and grow them.

On the american continent, horses were not an indigenous species, yet there are wild mustangs to be found in the USA. Iirc some of them even descended from the first horses the Spanish shipped there and left behind when they retreated.

Is it possible that the Cyclops Interceptors we encounter today are indeed the former workhorses of the Thargoids, left behind when they retreated from the Pleiades Nebula? Thargoid Mustangs that use the Barnacle sites as watering holes?

(There is a third explanation possible: Thargoid kids riding their ponies, but how likely is that?)
:)

One more thing I noticed:
When I tried to get away from the Thargoids, both times I received the notification 'Hazardous Substance Detected', the same you get when you load Thargoid items into cargo racks which are not corrosion resistant. Since my attempts to escape were not successful, I did not get a chance to inspect the ship's hull for chemical burn marks, but I would not be surprised if they had a striking resemblance to the damage visible on the wrecks to be found in NHSS'.

That's some good investing there :) I feel bad for your bank balance!

I've long speculated that we're not seeing Thargoids, but some sort of drone ships, they seem far too dumb to be piloted by Thargoids. I'd speculated that they are sent in first to "prepare the area". But I really like your idea of them being left behind after the Thargoids left - that's a really interesting idea.

EDIT: I had a thought re: getting attacked unprovoked.
Is it possible there's a "Proximity Timer" for want of a better phrase on the drones. If you spend a certain time close to them, they will attack regardless of whether you provoked them or not? That's the only other explanation I can think of right now that's not "they ate too much and got mad" (which does seem like what's happening!).

What are the exploding noises happening each time they turn hostile?

Never mind the bank balance, Palin missions pay well enough to afford that, otherwise I wouldn't have tried it.

'Proximity timer' is a possibility, but I havn't been around them long enough before to trigger that. They usually jump away when they're finished with their business and I don't know of any other way to keep them in the vicinity than to feed them. Maybe feeding them one MA at a time, retreating a few Km, rinse & repeat and taking the time until they become mad. I think I'm going to try that.

What are the exploding noises happening each time they turn hostile?

I am not exactly sure, but it took me a moment to realize that it takes a while for so much cargo to drop out of the ship's hatch. That is why much of the MA stayed in a cloud pretty close together, before I began to move the ship sideways. I think the noises are caused by the canisters exploding after the Thargoids collide with them.

You can hear the noises even long before they turn hostile.

One factor (you probably already noticed this!) is that the Thargons from one ship are impacting the second ship when they're close together. That might be the explosion noises, and also maybe why they get mad?

I think what happened in the meta-alloy video is this:

While the Thargoid was dragging in one of the meta-alloy canisters, the canister expired and disappeared (they don't last forever). The Thargoid interpreted this as you taking it, or destroying it.

That's what I think happened :)

Yeah that makes the most sense.

Obviously I have to feed them slowly next time, one by one. That way it is also possible to see how many MA it exactly needs to make them sick, given that this explanation is true.

EDIT:
At 7:27 min in the video tiny explosions are visible at the hull of one of the Thargoid ships. It's not recognizable on the scanner, but it can only be MA-canisters hitting it. However they stay peaceful until 8:15 min, so I don't think that is the reason for them to turn red.

You are right, the explosion noises can be heard directly before they switch to attack mode, it's barely audible under the sounds the Thargoid ships emit.

I'm done with the 'goids for the moment.

I've spent the past week to ten days with a CRC load of xenotech plying routes between the Pleiades and California nebulae and I haven't been hyperdicted once. They seem to have gone a bit quiet... so until the next round of Thargoid naughtiness..............

I've been back from Colonia for ten months or so and it's time to go back out there as I have more exploring to do.

The 'goids will still be around when I get back to The Bubble, I'm sure.

See you around. o7!

I am usually -but not always- hyperdicted when entering/leaving the Pleiades.
I am now carrying a shutdown field neutralizer just to show them the middle finger. :)

I saw the galnet article about the neutraliser not working for large ships, but what size is that? Do they work for Annacondas & Cutters?

What I'm seeing at that point is the Thargons from the bottom ship hitting the top ship and exploding.

Fastest Asp Explorer in the Galaxy?

Look at that:

You might be wondering how an AspEx can go that fast. Yesterday I was trying to feed as much Meta-Alloy as possible to Thargoid ships again and here is what happened (at 9:45 min):

Possible method to decode the insignias?

Forgot to ask: Can somebody tell me where I can find that event log? I just moved my FrEagle to the Maia-system.

YES!!! I am the King of Thargoid Frame Shift Anomaly Surfing. :D

And many thanks for the info about EDDiscovery.

They just vant to be left alone!
It’s probably related to being brought up in a hive ;)

Cant rep you again yet, but have some virtual rep for the science- I’ve been asking for a couple of weeks for people with Thargoid encounter experience to check out this hypothesis. It should confirm or deny the hypothesis that (part of) the goid logo relates to its rank. If you have EDDiscovery you can select this event type to be displayed which should give you that info. Otherwise it will be in the ED log file but not sure where that’s held.
