I dislike the FSS because of the FSS. I would rather pilot my ships around to discover worlds in first-person game-play than park them and play with bits and bobs on a mini-game dial. It partially defeats the reason to have spaceships in the game instead of just radio telescopes or something.
All that FSS busy work could just as well be carried out by on-board avionics and computer systems no more advanced than what we use today. There's no real art nor intelligence involved in the process, and no, this is not an exaggeration.

I didn't say I enjoy it, I simply gave up on ED as a space exploration game, and tried to find some enjoyment in other things (mostly faffing about, buying a HOTAS sure helped a lot). That's what I meant by "making my peace with it".

I wouldn't be surprised if the answer would be that we literally can't. After all, take a look at the releases and their bugs this past year. Or how severe bugs with the FSS and also the Codex have gone unfixed since last December. It could well be a can of worms that the B-team would rather not open unless they absolutely had to - such as when they had to add Arx in there.

To be fair, I’ve seen a number of people, including those who say they’ve been multiple tens of thousands of light years out, mis-understand how the honk works now. I’m not sure that is a ringing endorsement of it’s functionality
