The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Zombaland (Triple Eight Championship, Race 5)

Press Release from Stevenson Whirlwind Adventures:

We here at SWA would like to thank @Alec Turner for hosting this marvelous race, even if there were some... complications regarding Commander Stevenson's health and the treatment thereof. She managed to escape confinement while Dr. Arya Darzi was developing a cure for her condition, and apparently acting on pure instinct proceeded to make repeated runs in both Haulier than Thou and Ship of Theseus. Unsurprisingly, her condition did not improve her performance at all... though reviews of the flight recorder indicates she repeatedly came within ten seconds of exceeding her times in both categories.

Thankfully, a squad of the Hauly Orders Hospitaller of the Adepta Sororitas, with the aide of some hastily reprogrammed Cyber-Hounds, managed to capture the Commander outside Ele Agricultural Biosphere and successfully administered the nano-treatment in time. The Commander is expected to make a full recovery in time.

Gyeong Castro,
COO Stevenson Whirlwind Adventures
Get well soon, commander.
After being stuck on a rock for about a month (due to real life shenanigans), I'm on my way back to the Bubble, hoping to catch the next race.

I just wanted to say thanks very much Alec for organising a great race. It was my first Buckyball and I had an absolute blast. A couple of the past races put me off trying because I thought I wouldn't be able to keep track of all the bonus requirements. Glad I tried this one!

Thanks! Super glad you enjoyed it. In fact I almost had no bonuses at all but then I wanted to get some SRV racing in this season without penalising people who don't enjoy the SRV so a bonus option seemed the best way. Oh, and then I added the gentle landing bonus for just a little bit of added challenge.

I think all the submissions are in now so fInal leaderboards will be coming in about 4hrs time(ish).

I thought I'd share my video now for those interested.

On the first run I just looked at the system map and plotted out what seemed to be a logical order, as they were a straight line and then followed that. So I'd planned to start at Killough, then Pippin, then Vesalius, then Lagos Settlement and lastly Ele. I thought they were spaced apart enough to not be an issue when jumping back to Supercruise and trying to drop again, but I messed up the entry when I got to Lagos and so I took the opportunity to check Noel as it was only 500Km away, and that was going to be OK. It had a clear exit at the time back to the start and so I went with that. I figured the less time spent in Orbital Cruise the better, and given how bad I am at dropping out into Glide on lower G planets, the less speed I have to scrub off the better 🙂

So it comes down to the eternal question in interplanetary travel, how high up into Orbital Cruise do you go before aiming towards your destination? Do you turn straight away? Do you wait a bit? Do you leave Orbital Cruise entirely. Without the SCO the answer's normally dependant on gravity and distance. Now the sensible thing to do would be to go back and forth between two points multiple times testing and timing different heights. But I'm not sensible, and I fly a lot more on feel.
My general rule of thumb is if it's less than 0.5g then inside Orbital Cruise is fine (unless it's on the other side of the planet). So as it was 0.1g I'd get to between 150 and 200Km and then pitch up until I hit the Blue Zone. Stay in that on the 0 - 5 degree side so you're always gaining height, hence getting faster, then drop.

Still can't believe my second go was my fastest.

OK, the wait is over and I can now reveal the final times!!!

So, in regulation class, looking at new entries from the bottom upwards we have: Cmdr jspace wielding a weapon I had to google (and am consequently now probably on some kind of government watch list). Unfortunately jspace was a bit too thorough and visited three settlements for their regulation run. Fun fact, if I deducted the slowest of their unnecessary stops they'd be in 7th place on 18:10! Next and it's someone I believe is new to Buckyball Racing, Cmdr Wenyn Trout, welcome to crazyland! Smashing the zombuurs with a speedbowling Type-9 they finish their first race with a perfectly respectable 19:57 to come 15th. Just 9 seconds above and Martinjameson favours big missiles. Frustratingly, they had 100% hull until the Culpeper mailslot which means they take 14th rather than 11th. Snatching 10th place from Tobias by just 10 seconds our next contestant is FearlessF21 serving chocolate hobnobs and coffee. It's well known that zombuurs prefer tea so I think the coffee is an excellent choice! Next up and flying close to the wire (as is traditional) we have championship organiser and automated leaderboard wrangler Cmdr Bruski. Using a BOOMSTICK (*1), Bruski appeared to hit an oilslick at the Pippin Beacon (although still managed the 2nd fastest SRV time on this board) and also ran into some problems with the law at Lagos but still manages to take 7th place. And the last new entry in this class is Cmdr Sulu. Hitting that 100% bonus AGAIN the reformed ship smasher deployed perhaps the cruellest weapon we've seen so far (British Rail Sandwiches which even the Buurs don't deserve) and managed to finish 5th.

(*1) Yeah. All right, you primitive screwheads, listen up. See this? This... is my BOOMSTICK! It's a twelve gauge double barreled Remington, S-Mart's top-of-the-line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about $109.95. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop Smart. Shop S-Mart. YA GOT THAT!?

Our regulation class winners tho' are: Kevin The Stabber, Epaphus and Ozric. Congratulations on some fantastic racing!

Now let's turn to the unlimited racing class. First up again is jspace who stuck with a Cobra Mk III (race tuned of course) and tried using fire. Now this honourable commander actually submitted a second unlimited run after realising they'd missed the Pippin Beacon target by just a single meter but (since that run was quite a bit slower) I've decided to be generous and awward them their SRV bonus but with a 10 second penalty which puts them 12th, just one second ahead of Inga Stevenson (I hope Inga won't mind too much, I think 10 seconds was more than enough penalty for being just one meter off target). A couple of minutes ahead and Martinjameson is smacking zombuurs in the mush with morning stars (I must say you folks seem worryingly knowledgeable about your weapons!). LeroyTethroTull just pips Martin to 10th place tho' flying an Imperial Courier and using Deez (probably best not to ask). Up in 5th place and Raiko steps up to bat a final time (knocking Sir Boundness for six ... see what I did there?), and lastly Cmdr Bruski manages to slide a fantastic boomstick assisted unlimited run under the closing finishing gate to take 2nd place.

Our unlimited class winners are: Epaphus, Bruski and Shaye. Again, congratulations to all!

I think that just leaves me to thank everyone for taking part (I hope you enjoyed the race), to thank @Buur and @Rheeney for being good sports about all this (surprising really as goddam flippin' space zombies are not normally known for their sportsmanship) and to reveal the final votes on whether people agree with me or not that they are in fact goddam flippin' space zombies.

I think that's pretty conclusive!

Actually, while I'm at it, a couple more charts (we all love a bit of pie right?).

Ok, and that's me done. Thanks again and our next race will be consults notes definitely a race ... of some kind ... courtesy of @psykit (who I can't help noticing didn't submit a run despite having quite a few goes at it!).

Nah, I'm kidding ... your brilliant streaming of Buckyball is excellent promotion for the club so thanks as always to you and everyone else who helps spread the word.

Until next time ...

Awesome final update and really well done to all of the people taking part. Regulation is really close, which is great to see. If you take the unfortunate jspace's adjusted time then they whole field is covered by 3 minutes!

Huge thanks once again to Alec for organising this race, it's been really fun and frustrating and nice to do something that's quite different in style. I had a blast.

What a great race @Alec Turner ! If not catching a virus I would have tried to keep up on the leaderboard just to beat you once. Dispite the „own race penalty“ it would have been a win for me …. hmm, wait a moment, virus … zombies … oooh you son of …! 😲

well played sir, well played indeed!

Btw, warchting you guys videos I see you boosting towards the ground 🤪 something you do only once in fa-off - I need to find a way around that 🤔

Quite often my boosts are followed by landing gear deployment to halt the boost. You’ll also see a couple of occasions where it was 1 boost too many and I was forced to take evasive action to avoid slamming my hull bonus into the ground.
